  10. March 16, 2011 ELEMENTARY WRESTLING: Riverside wins wrestling?s Main Event at Jeff High More than 250 children from all nine Jeff elementary schools participate in wrestling tournament By MATT KOESTERS Matt.Koesters@newsandtribune.com The News and Tribune Wed Mar 16, 2011, 01:34 AM EDT JEFFERSONVILLE ? With 265 children from nine different grade schools participating, the scene at Johnson Arena was one of controlled chaos as third, fourth and fifth graders grappled to win a pizza party and a banner for their schools. In the end, it was Riverside Elementary that won the most wrestling matches to win the Main Event at Jeffersonville High School on Tuesday. For Riverside, it was the school?s second Main Event overall championship in five years. Bridgepoint came in second overall, and Parkwood and Utica tied for third place. Each child wrestled two matches against another child of comparable weight, with the winner receiving a championship ribbon and the wrestler suffering the setback declared runner-up. In the third-grade division, Bridgepoint put together the most wins, followed by Parkwood in second, Riverside in third and Utica in fourth. In fourth-grade action, Riverside took the championship, followed by Bridgepoint, Wilson and Northaven. And among fifth graders, Parkwood had the most wins, followed by Riverside, Bridgepoint and Northaven. The Main Event is the culmination of three weeks of practice by the children, each of whom received instruction from current Team Jeff wrestlers who graduated from their elementary schools. For Team Jeff, the Main Event gives kids a taste of what the sport of wrestling is all about, and many of them will go on to become wrestlers at the next level. ?It?s huge,? Jeff high school wrestling coach Danny Struck said. ?My prime example is the first year we ever won sectionals in the past 20 (or) 25 years was the first year that my first fifth grader hit his freshman year.? Since that time, the Jeffersonville High School wrestling team has won sectional in four of its last five tries. ?To me, that?s an exact stat on what it?s doing for us,? Struck said. However, the Main Event isn?t just to help feed new wresters into the Team Jeff program at the next level ? it?s to give current wrestlers a taste of what coaching and teaching are about, and an opportunity for them to give back to the community. Jeffersonville High School wrestlers are required to help prepare grade schoolers for the Main Event before they can claim their varsity letters and season awards. But most seemed to be enjoying the experience. ?I don?t really think of it as mandatory,? Jeff junior heavyweight Mackenzie Burns said. ?It?s something I like to do because I?m teaching kids who are just like (I was) at one time, because the high school kids came and coached me and that?s what got me into wrestling.? ?I consider this the biggest part of our program, because this is where we get 115 fifth graders? names,? Struck said, ?and in sixth grade, our last two sixth-grade groups were huge in middle school. These kids, even though it?s only two-and-a-half weeks, believe they wrestled in a league and they beileve they?re wrestlers. That?s what we?re trying to get them to say: ?I wrestle.?? http://newsandtribune.com/sports/x449493942/ELEMENTARY-WRESTLING-Riverside-wins-wrestling-s-Main-Event-at-Jeff-High

  19. Story - Coach Maddox is assistant coach at Jeff High, Coach Stith is a volunteer coach and former 2x State qualifier for Jeff High, Kirk Moore wrestled for New Albany High School http://newsandtribune.com/localsports/x1348434795/Southern-Indiana-fight-team-trains-Southern-Indiana-hopefuls February 24, 2011 Southern Indiana fight team trains Southern Indiana hopefuls By MATT KOESTERS Matt.Koesters@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Thu Feb 24, 2011, 12:07 AM EST JEFFERSONVILLE ? Josh Stith has a motor that doesn?t quit. He starts out tossing bombs at the mitted gloves of sparring partner Kevin Crowder, who calls out combination numbers as Stith throws punches. After a full minute of throwing haymakers, trainer Brent Maddox calls for Stith to switch it up. Stith immediately turns, trades a quick five with Kirk Moore, and now it?s Stith?s job to keep Moore from trying to wrestle him to the ground. Moore gets a hold of Stith?s leg a few times, but doesn?t manage to take him down before Maddox calls for another change. Now it?s Maddox?s turn at the 170-pound Stith. Holding a big padded shield, Maddox slaps hands with Stith, who then throws a flying knee into the heart of it and takes it to the floor. As Stith sprawls on top of the shield attempting to throw punches into the padding, Maddox?s 300-pound frame is on top of the smaller man, trying to control Stith?s wrists. Stith adjusts, squirms out of Maddox?s grasp and rains blows into the side of the bag. A chime rings. Stith is back to his feet, and he?s ready to go again. For 10 solid minutes, Stith runs through each drill with his teammates. And he never stops. ?We?ve only had seven or eight people who can get through that,? Maddox said after Stith completes the ?Razor Rob? drill. ?The rest of them all throw up.? This is Full Force Fighting, a Jeffersonville-based mixed-martial arts, or MMA, team that trains fighters to compete in the fastest-growing sport in the country. Stith and Maddox, both 30, are professional fighters and MMA trainers at Full Moon Martial Arts along Middle Road in Jeffersonville, a martial-arts dojo that boasts 15 trainers with expertise in seven different disciplines. For Stith and Maddox, the fight game is their release, their hobby and their passion. ?Some people golf. Some people play basketball. Some people fish,? Stith said. ?This is what I do. This is my hobby.? Thanks to promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, the sport of MMA has become boxing?s chief rival for pay-per-view buys and revenue. Fighters like Stith and Maddox have been in the fight game for years, but newcomers are a foregone conclusion, predicted Chuck Dismang, owner of Full Moon Martial Arts. ?Boxing has lost its allure for everybody,? Dismang said. ?Kickboxing is neither here nor there anymore. MMA is just taking over. In my opinion, it hasn?t even hit this area yet.? Dismang thinks that?s about to change. With the UFC holding a live event at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville on March 3, Dismang expects an influx of new fighters, each hoping to become the next Ultimate Fighter. Some young hopefuls have already found their way to the Full Force team. Moore, a 20-year-old New Albany native, started training with Full Force about seven months ago. A high-school wrestler, Moore was looking for a way to continue competing past high school. ?I wrestled for like 10 or 11 years,? Moore said. ?After I graduated, I missed being competitive. I wanted to get back in competition.? Moore has done so. Already 1-0 as an amateur fighter, Moore is preparing for his second fight this Saturday in Owensboro, Ky., at the National Armory, where he?ll face off against Justin Becker. At 6-foot and just 145 pounds, Moore?s long and tall for a fighter his weight. Making the transition from wrestling to MMA hasn?t been 100 percent smooth. MMA incorporates wrestling with other disciplines like boxing, Muay Thai (the Thai art of dirty boxing, using elbows and knees), jiu-jitsu (dominant positions and submissions) and kickboxing into one sport. ?Jiu-jitsu, it came pretty easily, pretty naturally,? Moore said. ?Striking, I had to work a whole lot harder. It took me like a month or two to get used to it, but eventually I just worked really hard and got good at it.? Currently a student and a UPS employee, Moore hopes to eventually fight for a living. Maddox and Stith guide him, getting him prepared. ?We all train together,? Maddox said. ?So if a guy?s getting ready for a fight, we?ll focus on that guy, but if nobody has anything scheduled, we all train together. ?If I would (have a) fight, we would all research my fighter, and whoever I was fighting we?d gameplan (against), and then I would work on a strategy to beat that guy.? A Thorntown, Ind., native, Maddox?s road to Full Force was a long one with several stops. After being stationed in California in the Marines, Maddox enrolled at a junior college outside of Temecula, Calif. He met world-champion fighter Dan Henderson at a local event and started training with Henderson?s Team Quest for more than a year. Maddox eventually moved to New York to play football for Iona College, and then after his playing days were over, he moved to Jeffersonville to play football for the Louisville Fire indoor football team. The Fire franchise isn?t around anymore, but Maddox still is, spending 12-15 hours per week training and preparing fighters for bouts. ?Brent and Josh, especially, are great motivators, and Brent is probably the best corner man I?ve ever seen,? Dismang said. ?They know how to get the guys motivated. Their record for the team speaks for itself.? Dismang estimates that Full Force fighters are 25-4 since the team formed in 2008, and has hoisted three amateur belts, including a championship earned by Stith. Stith was forced to relinquish the amateur title when he turned pro. ?For a small little Southern Indiana school, we?ve done real well,? Dismang said. For a small school, the places is packed with experience. Full Moon has instructors versed in aikido, jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai in house. But Maddox and Stith are the leads on MMA. ?I think it?s getting more popular now, but a lot of people just don?t understand it,? Stith said. ?They see it like it?s dogfighting or something like that, but it?s really not, because we have a choice. ?Out of the six or seven fights I?ve had, I?m friends with every one of those guys, and I didn?t know them before we fought. A lot of those guys are some of my good friends now.?
  20. Last night Parkview middle school hosted the CLARK COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS at Jeff High. 5 rounds of wrestling took place between the 5 Clark county teams in just about 3 hours. Charlestown claimed the title going 4-0 on the night followed by Parkview at 3-1, River Valley at 2-2, New Washington at 1-3 and Providence at 0-4. The most closely contested battle of the night was between Parkview and River Valley ? the match score came down to a 44-44 tie, and Parkview won by tiebreaker criteria for having the most pins. Parkview sponsored the event and awarded all champions a t-shirt and a gold medal. The runner up and 3rd place each got awarded ribbons. 24. Jeffersonville's Weekley second at State Defending champ tops him 3-1 in final Written by Michael Pointer The Indianapolis Star Filed Under Sports Indiana HS INDIANAPOLIS ? Renaldo Weekley fell just short of a state title, but he still couldn't keep the smile off his face. The Jeffersonville senior made a run through the 145-pound division at the Indiana individual state wrestling championship Saturday with a series of close victories but lost 3-1 in the finals to Crown Point's Eric Roach, who won his second consecutive state title. Despite the close loss, Weekley said he wasn't disappointed. ?At the beginning of the season, I didn't think I would be good at 145 at all,? said Weekley, who finished 50-2. ?But when I started winning tournaments, I started getting ranked higher and I started getting some confidence and felt like I could be one of the best wrestlers in the state.? Jeffersonville coach Danny Struck said that confidence played a major role in his success on Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse. He started the day with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over South Bend Clay's Laquan Lanford in the quarterfinals before beating Evansville Memorial's Roy Whetstine 3-1 in the semifinal. He lost by that same score to Roach, who will wrestle collegiately at Indiana. ?Going into that (championship) match, he was extremely confident,? Struck said. ?He was just convinced he wasn't going to lose. That's been the best thing about watching him lately, seeing him transform into such a confident wrestler. He was a scrawny little kid in my history class when I first met him as a freshman, but he worked his butt off and ended up wrestling under the lights.? Roach (42-0) took the lead with a takedown in the second period and kept Weekley in check the rest of the match. Struck said Weekley is especially effective in close, but Roach seldom let him get him into a clinched position. ?Renaldo is exceptional with the hooks, and the other kid knew that,? Struck said. ?He did a great job of staying out of the danger spots.? Jeffersonville junior Alonzo Shepherd (49-4) finished eighth at 112. He lost the quarterfinal to Hanover Central's Paul Petrov by pin at 5:31, dropped a 4-0 decision to Griffith's Brian Orzechowicz in the first consolation round, then fell to Elkhart Central's Abraham Que 3-1 in the seventh-place match. Jeff's Jimmy Pratt (34-7) finished seventh at 215. He lost the quarterfinal to Perry Meridian's Logan Cooper 4-2, lost 7-2 to Bellmont's Travis Thatcher in the first consolation, then pinned Kokomo's Cameron Colby in 2:18. It's the first time Jeffersonville has had three wrestlers earn top-eight finishes in a state meet. Justin Sokeland of The Courier-Journal contributed to this report
  25. February 20, 2011 H.S. WRESTLING: Jeff?s Weekley earns state runner up By GREG MENGELT Greg.Mengelt@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Sun Feb 20, 2011, 12:19 AM EST INDIANAPOLIS ? Jeffersonville senior Renaldo Weekley fell to top-ranked and defending 145-pound champion Eric Roach, 3-1, in the state championship match on Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Weekly won twice early in the day ? in a pin of Laquan Lunford of South Bend Clay and a 5-4 decision over Evansville Memorial?s Roy Whetstine ? to advance to the championship match. Weekley and Roach were scoreless after one period and Roach led 1-0 after two periods. Weekley evened the match with an escape to open the third period, but Roach improved to 42-0 when he got a takedown of Weekley with 1:40 left in the match. ?We are extremely proud of Renaldo,? Jeff coach Dan Struck said. ?He started wrestling as a freshman and has had an outstanding career. His confidence was fun to watch as a coach, to see a young man who believes in himself that way. Weekley entered the individual state tournament ranked fourth in the state and his season ended with a mark of 50-2. He defeated the third, fifth and sixth ranked wrestlers to get to the final match. Jeff?s 215-pounder, senior Jimmy Pratt, finished seventh by pinning Kokomo?s Cameron Colby in his final match. ?We told them both we love them and to promise us that even bigger things could come in their lives,? Struck said of Pratt and Weekley. Junior Alonzo Shepherd went 0-3 on Saturday after qualifying for the top-8 on Friday. He finished eighth in the state. ?All he had to say to me after his match was this won?t happen again,? Struck said. ?He said, ?I start working on Monday.??
