  6. A Call to Our Wrestling Community By Steve Fraser May 2, 2011 The 2011 NCAA Championships in Philadelphia were fantastic. While enjoying this year?s close team race between Penn State, Cornell and Iowa, I was struck by how much talent we have in the USA. The competition was fierce among the many tough and skilled athletes. As national Greco-Roman coach for our U.S. team I could not help but think how we might capture this great wrestling talent and turn it into Olympic gold medals. I sat in the crowded Wells Fargo Center thinking about how we can help many of these wrestlers go on to the biggest sporting event in the world? the Olympic Games. My thoughts were, ?why do so many of these great athletes end their wrestling careers after college? Why are there so few wrestlers that go on and compete in the two Olympic styles, Greco-Roman and freestyle?? The Olympics! Without a doubt the Olympic Games are the most prestigious sporting event on the planet. You think winning the NCAA Wrestling Championships is a thrill?! Think about the title, ?Olympic Champion.? I can tell you it is the thrill of all thrills! Winning a medal in the Olympic Games or a World Championship is the ultimate high. Even the big money professional athletes realize how special the Olympic Games are. That is why so many famous pro-tennis players and pro-basketball players try so hard to compete in the Olympics. So what is it ? with our sport? Why does it seem so difficult for the wrestling community to get together and work toward a common goal of creating a wrestling country that promotes all three styles of wrestling? folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman? Am I wrong when I imagine that ?all? wrestling people in the USA feel proud when our country does well in world and Olympic competition? Don?t middle and high school folkstyle coaches walk a bit taller when they see the U.S. wrestlers winning these medals? I get the fact that the three styles of wrestling in the USA have vastly different rules. But still?. it is wrestling! And the fact is - the wrestlers that wrestle and learn all three styles actually do better in high school and college wrestling than the athletes that specialize just in folkstyle. For our country to win Olympic and world medals it takes a unified nation. It takes an organized and interrelated approach to guide and develop our talent. As the Greco coach I can tell you that we need help. We need a lot of help from our youth coaches throughout America. We need young wrestlers getting more experience and learning Greco and freestyle skills early in their careers. We need more kids wrestling Greco and freestyle in the spring and summer - throughout their high school and college years. Why not? We are a smart country. We can surely figure out this dilemma. These days more and more wrestlers are wrestling folkstyle year-round and do not experience Greco or freestyle at all. I submit that this is a huge problem, a problem that all wrestling enthusiasts, coaches and athletes will regret down the road. You don?t have to be a brain surgeon to figure out that this system is not helping our nation?s Olympic effort. It is frightening how few Greco wrestlers we have coming up through the youth ranks. It is amazing how well we have been able to do world-wide considering this fact. In 2007 Greco-Roman actually won the World Team Title. In the last four Olympic Games the U.S. Greco team has won more Olympic medals than every country in the world, except for Russia. Just think if we had a U.S. system that better developed Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers. I am telling you we would be beating the Russians consistently. Agree or disagree? I would love to hear your comments, ideas and/or suggestions regarding our nation?s international wrestling effort. Please email me at sfraser@usawrestling.org. As always?Let?s expect to win, in all styles of wrestling!

  9. http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011304280106 shows picture of figure four in article Indiana high school wrestlers and coaches will be grappling with rule changes next season. by: Justin Sokeland The National Federation of State High School Associations wrestling rules committee approved different weight classes that will be implemented in 2011-12. The committee also ruled the popular ?Figure 4? hold around the head as illegal. The smallest weight class was changed from 103 pounds to 106. The other divisions now include 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285 pounds. The shift was an attempt to keep seven percent of wrestlers in each class. ?In the end, wrestling is wrestling, and whatever they say for us to weigh is what we will weigh,? said Jeffersonville coach Danny Struck, the new vice president of the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association. ?Every coach has to deal with it, every coach will have the same advantages or disadvantages with the changes.? The last major shift in weight classes came in 1988, when the lowest weight class was increased from 98 to 103 pounds. Other changes were implemented in 2002 (adding the 215-pound class to make 14 divisions) and 2006 (when the 275-pound class was increased to 285). ?At our upper weights it will be an advantage because we have an abundance of heavier kids right now,? Struck said. ?But it will be a disadvantage for our lower-weight kids as they have one less weight class to fit into. And people think by changing the weight classes, kids won't cut as much weight. We will try and fill the best team possible, teaching kids to do the right thing.? Struck's bigger concern was the ban on the ?Figure 4.? That move, a favorite with the Red Devils, allowed a wrestler to wrap his legs around the opponent's head to force a pin. It's created by locking the right foot behind the left knee, with the legs forming the ??4.? ?This is our bread-and-butter move for our lightweight kids,? Struck said. ?Last season alone we had over 100 pins as a team with this one move.? The committee cited injury risk as the reason for the ban. The ?Figure 4? was already illegal when applied to the body and both legs.
  10. YOUTH WRESTLING Team Jeff competes in Horsepower Tourney Team Jeff Wrestling Club participated in the Moore Traditional High School Horsepower USA Wrestling Tournament this past weekend. Winning titles in their respective weight classes for Team Jeff were Brandon Spangler in the Cadet 189-pound division, Matthew Munoz in the elementary heavyweight division and Joseph Schanzburg in the elementary division. Other finishes for Team Jeff were the following: Brent Browner ? second, Junior 171; Brandon Brown, second, Junior 215; Tavon Lucas ? third, Cadet 112; David Fridley ? fifth, Junior 160; Andrew Schmidt ? fourth, Schoolboy 105; Ryan Kopp ? second, elementary; Derrik Thomas ? fourth, elementary; Nick Kauchak ? second, elementary; Aaron Wasburn ? fourth, elementary. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING Struck voted vice president of IHSWCA Jeffersonville High School head wrestling coach Danny Struck was voted the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association?s vice president last Friday. Struck will be replacing the outgoing vice president, Trent McCormick of Yorktown High School. McCormick has been elected president of the IHSWCA. Winning the vice presidential election means Struck will take over as the IHSWCA?s president in two years. Struck has been Jeff?s head coach for nine years. He has led the Red Devils to four sectional titles in the past five years, and just received his ninth coach of the year selection from various organizations. He was named the IHSWCA Regional Coach of the Year this past season. 13. Loving life: Path to stardom leads Jeffersonville Wrestling grad to surprising stop on reality TV BY MICHAEL RESCHKE michael.reschke@newsandtribune.com The News and Tribune Sat Apr 23, 2011, 10:26 PM EDT JEFFERSONVILLE ? If you were walking the halls of Jeffersonville High School a few years ago, chances are you wouldn?t have noticed John Miller. ?If he was in a room with you, you wouldn?t even know he was there,? his father, also named John Miller, said referring to his son. ?He?s such a quiet guy.? He wasn?t an imposing fellow either. As a freshman he only weighed about 120 pounds and was less than 6 feet tall. Considering the person he was back when he first came to Jeffersonville High School, it?s safe to say no one expected to find his picture in the cast bios section of the website for the reality show ?Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too.? The reality show the reserved kid from Southern Indiana wound up on is the second season of a dating show where 15 bachelors live in a $20 million Los Angeles mansion with three women from various seasons of another reality show called ?Bad Girls Club.? According to Oxygen?s website ?Bad Girls Club? brings seven bad girls together, ?in a house where the women recognize that their outrageous behavior has hindered their relationships, careers and lives.? In the first episode of Love Games, which aired Monday night, the competition was a kissing booth where the bachelors stood in a line blindfolded, kissed each bad girl and voted on who was the best kisser. It?s not exactly where you?d expect to find that small, quiet freshman a few years after graduation, but what a difference a few years can make. While a bachelor on Love Games wasn?t exactly what Miller aspired to be, it does compliment the career he has wanted to pursue for as long as anyone can remember. Since his early childhood Miller?s father remembers his son saying he wanted to be a professional wrestler. ?At that time I was shaking my head,? John Miller Sr. said. ?He was a skinny, little bitty kid.? But his size didn?t deter him from his dream. From day one on the Jeffersonville High School wrestling team, Head Coach Danny Struck said Miller was talking about becoming a pro wrestler. ?Typically kids who wrestle don?t talk about pro wrestling,? Struck said. ?But he said that was his goal.? Miller began lifting weights and got into bodybuilding, which led him to the Kentucky Muscle Strength & Fitness Extravaganza. At the event, while Miller was walking from booth to booth, he ran into professional wrestler Rob Conway who was with World Wrestling Entertainment at the time. They discussed Miller?s interest in becoming a professional wrestler and Conway suggested he join Ohio Valley Wrestling, which was the former developmental organization for the WWE. This training, along with a growth spurt that turned a scrawny teenager into a 6-foot-1-inch 220 pound man, helped Miller get a call from the WWE to do a try out in Tampa, Fla. Since then Miller has appeared in several wrestling events and is scheduled for a WWE pay-per-view event May 1 and Monday Night Raw on May 2. It was through the WWE that Miller met someone who had done reality TV before and told him it was a good way to get some exposure. Soon after that Miller called his father and asked for a video camera. He sent a video to MTV?s reality show ?The Real World,? but he didn?t make it. He did however get a phone call and several subsequent interviews, before being chosen as one of the bachelors for Love Games. Then it was off to Los Angeles for, ?a wild experience,? Miller said. ?There were all different kinds of personalities. Every group of people you could think of in high school, we had one of each personality.? Despite living in a house for a month with so many different personalities, Miller said he made friends, especially with Taylor, an in-store model at Abercrombie and Fitch who is originally from Birmingham, Ala., and Emilio who is best known for being the ex-boyfriend of Snooki from MTV?s hit reality show ?Jersey Shore.? The eight-episode season of Love Games was filmed in September, so Miller knows how far he made it, but he?s not allowed to spoil it for viewers. Although, using some show business skills, he did offer an intriguing hint for viewers. ?Let?s just say I was a valuable guy on the show,? Miller said. His old wrestling coach seems to agree. Struck said when he was watching the first episode he noticed Miller didn?t say very much. That?s when Struck told his wife, ?You know what, he?s making it to the next round. If they were cancelling him he?d be all over the screen.? When and if that face time comes, Struck hopes it doesn?t come at a cost. ?I hope they don?t make John look like a jerk,? Struck said. Miller isn?t too worried about how he will be portrayed on the show, despite the potential for a surprise. ?All in all, I was pretty much just myself on the show,? Miller said. ?As far as editing, I have no idea. I haven?t seen the show.? Miller?s father said he?s not at all opposed to having his son on a reality TV show. ?I?m not against somebody trying to live their dreams,? John Miller Sr. said. ?I?m just proud of him.?

  21. April 13, 2011 SPORTS IN BRIEF: Eleven champions for Team Jeff at Madison By MATT KOESTERS Matt.Koesters@newsandtribune.com The News and Tribune Wed Apr 13, 2011, 12:09 AM EDT JEFFERSONVILLE ? WRESTLING Eleven champions for Team Jeff at Madison Team Jeff wrestling competed at the Madison Greco-Roman and Freestyle Invitational last Saturday and came away with 11 champions. In Greco-Roman wrestling, four Team Jeff wrestlers won championships. Brett Musch, Carson Somerville, Jordan Schremp and Jacob Everett each won first place in their respective weight classes. Sammy Jemerson and Nick Kauchak each placed second, and Zeke Jemerson took a third-place finish. In the freestyle competition, seven champions emerged for Team Jeff out of 16 competitors. Taking first place were Kaden Connin, Sammy Jemerson, Joseph Schansberg, Ryan Kopp, Kameron Fuller, Somerville and Schremp. Second-place finishes went to Keegan Connin, Drew Nelson, Jaime Shelby and Aaron Washburn. MIXED MARTIAL ARTS Stith hands Golightly first loss In another dominant performance, Josh ?Sledgehammer? Stith won his second professional mixed-martial arts bout last Saturday with a second-round technical knockout of previously undefeated Daniel Golightly (3-1). Stith took the fight to the ground early when Golightly attempted to open the match with a flying knee. Stith caught Golightly in the air and took him down. Golightly was able to scramble away from several Stith submission holds. ?There were a couple times I thought they were going to stop (the fight),? Stith said. ?But they kept letting it go.? Stith was able to lock in an armbar submission hold late in the first round. But Golightly was able to wait out the bell and escape the round. Stith finished Golightly in the second round when the referee stopped the match after Stith advanced to mount position and rained blows. Because Stith had pinned his opponents arms, Golightly was unable to defend himself, and the referee called for the TKO. Stith (2-0) fights out of the Full Force Fighting camp, working out of Full Moon Martial Arts along Middle Road in Jeffersonville. 24. April 3, 2011 SPORTS IN BRIEF: Jeff's Shepherd earns All-America honors By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The News and Tribune Sun Apr 03, 2011, 12:06 AM EDT > SOUTHERN INDIANA ? Jeffersonville High School junior Alonzo Shepherd earned All-American honors at the 2011 ASICS/USA Wrestling Junior Cadet Folkstyle Nationals this weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Shepherd is the seventh USA Wrestling All-American in Team Jeff Wrestling Club history. Shepherd finished eighth in the 119-pound weight class, posting a 4-3 record. Shepherd lost to Minnesota wrestler Isaac Novacek in the seventh-place match by a 4-2 decision. Shepherd won his first-round match over Iowa?s Collin Kolars by a 7-2 decision. After falling to three-time Illinois state champion Nick Harrison in the second round by a 10-0 major decision, Shepherd won three matches in a row in the consolation bracket. The three victories were against Zachary Nelson of Missouri (8-2 decision), Grant Martsolf of Indiana (4-1 decision) and Tim Prescott of MAC Wrestling Club (11-3 major decision). Shepherd then lost in the fifth round of the consolation bracket to Tony Perl of Wisconsin by a 6-0 decision before falling in the seventh-place match. ?Alonzo called me minutes after winning his match to be All-American and was very excited,? Jeff High and Team Jeff head wrestling coach Danny Struck said. ?It is great to have gained our seventh USAW All-American, but even more fun to hear in a kid?s voice how much they love wrestling. That is what makes it fun to coach Alonzo. He loves the sport as much as our coaches do.? Four other Team Jeff wrestlers competed in the nationals. Brett Kempf (135 pounds) and Brandon Spangler (171) each finished with 1-2 records. Teammates Ryan Dewitt (heavyweight) and Jordan Schremp (135) each posted 0-2 marks.
  25. WRESTLING: Indiana wins the first-ever Battle of the Bridge Hoosier wrestlers battle against grapplers from Kentucky By MATT KOESTERS newstribune IN The News and Tribune Thu Mar 31, 2011, 01:10 AM EDT JEFFERSONVILLE ? Two squads of wrestlers from Southern Indiana and Louisville clashed at Johnson Arena in the first-ever Battle of the Bridge, an All-Star showcase of Kentuckiana wrestling talent on Wednesday. In the end, it was the Indiana A squad that took the meet. But all of the wrestlers at the event benefited by just taking part, because a bio of each participant will be sent to every college in the country, Team Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?I hope this event continues to grow over the years,? Struck said. ? I hope it inspires wrestlers to be better, and attracts colleges to recruit kids from our area. I want it to foster a positive atmosphere between all Louisville metropolitan schools and kids. If we all strive to make each other better, in turn we will get better.? The meet featured 15 state qualifiers from the Kentucky side ? including three-time state champion John Fahy of Trinity and three other state runner ups ? taking on the nine sectional champions and three state qualifiers from the Jeffersonville Sectional. The Indiana A team ? comprised almost exclusively of Jeffersonville wrestlers ? handled Kentucky?s B team, but had a close one against the better Kentucky A squad, edging out a 36-30 victory. For Indiana, Alonzo Shepherd took a pinfall victory in the 112 weight class, as did Renaldo Weekley at 145 and Brandon Marlin at 160. Weekley took the most outstanding wrestler award for Indiana, and John Fahy of Trinity won the award on the Kentucky side. Weekly also had two pinfalls in the event, one coming in just 11 seconds. ?Our kids loved it,? Kentucky team leader Tim Harbison of Dupont Manual said. ?This will only get bigger each year, and it was neat to see different schools from both sides of the river interacting.? Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville College were both on hand to watch the event.
