  1. tyler willis in no way deserves to be booed. my only problem is i keep going back to the saying "you sleep with the dogs you get the fleas." if you put your self or your parents put you in a program that has coaches who act the way cathedrals do and you put yourself at risk for people to treat you the way they did tyler last night. wheres the integrity for the coaches? dont you say tylers not goin to be 100 percent in the finals and has 2 more years, vlahos is a senior and didnt do it intentially so lets injury default and not put our kid in this situation. i.e.: LC's coaching staff at the pendleton regional in the mason berryman situation.  (and mason punched the LC kid and got DQ'd with 15 seconds left in the 3rd) the LC coaches knew there kid had time and wasnt going to win and said let him(berryman) continue. its NOT tylers fault its the continuous bad actions of the cathedral COACHING staff the brought on the result of last night.

Were you one of the people booing him? These people did not boo the coaches, they boo'd him, If they had wanted to boo the coaches, they could have done that when they were being named during the finals introductions, instead they chose to boo every time the boy was announced. These people are the worst kind of fans that any sport can have, they need to all write a letter to this boy and his family for what they did to him last night.

  2. Yes they both are. It was great to see Brandon wrestling in the singlet that he should have been in his whole career, and I wish him luck next year at IU, and MJJ is just a great kid, that anyone that could spend more then a minute with him, would just love his character. I got a text shortly after his match, and was asked how long before he would quit smiling, I have known him for 4 years, and have never seen him without a smile on his face, and never not recieved a genuine hand shake, or hug from him. MJJ is one of, if not the best kid I have ever met in all the years I have been around the sport. I wish him luck wherever he winds up next year.

  3. i dont think people were booing the kid it was cathedral as a whole they never wrestle in the center they all stay close to the line and thier coach is joke I belive it was the coach that told him to stay down not doc because duck was told by doc not to go back out and still did so bring that bs to the table people are just tried of seeing that bald head loud mouth always getting his way

They bood at the time of the incident, they bood when he was introduced for the finals, they bood when he went out to the mat for the finals, they bood when he was getting an award for placing higher then over 300 other kids in his weight class. They were booing the kid, if they just wanted to boo cathederal once would have been more then enough, it was a pathetic display and the wrestling community was done a great diservice tonight by such a horrible display of sportsmanship. And no, I do not have any ties to Cathederal, I have ties to Warren Central, and have as much a reason to not like the Irish as anyone around, yet I would never take out any dislike I have for them on a high school kid. There is no defense for this. It was reprehensible for so called adults to act in this manner. This boy may never again reach this level in the tournament, and this is the image that he will be left with.

  4. I feel sorry for both wrestlers, yes it is horrible for Vlahos to lose a match this way, And I know that Willis would not want to win a match that way.

None of us know what kind of pain he was in. One thing we should all know is that any kid that reaches that level of the state tourney is a capable wrestler that has serious skills, dedication, and most of all desire. That desire is excactly why the choice to continue or not, cannot, and should not be left up to the kid. I am sure he wanted to continue.

Like the choice or not, agree with the call on the mat or not, but to actually boo the kid is not the way to respond. It was not his choice, it was an adults choice for him to not continue the match. It was a repulsive display by way to many people tonight, and anyone that bood the kid owes him an apology.

One of you who felt it was the right thing to do to boo this kid, please explaine to the board why you think booing a young man is right, because I wil never understand it.

  5. You will never find a kid with a better heart the Mike. He spent a large part of last year at our house, and he was always kind and respectful. My 12 year old daughter hates going to watch her brother wrestle (to many years in the stands), but she loves to watch Mike. He is a joy to be around, and is a fine young man. I wish him all the best this year at Conseco, and I will be there to cheer him on.

  6. AJ, you are correct, wrestling is more then the time we, or our kids spend on the mat. It is about the freinds that we find throughout their wrestling that makes it so much fun to be around. One of the things I miss the most since his graduation is the other fathers that I would see every weekend. We would spend the hours at the meet talking, and telling our own stories, listening to theirs. I know my son has made friends not just all over the state, but throughout the country as well, because of his travels. That fact alone ought to be enough, but then you look at the respect that you earn by working hard, and the dedication that you learn through this sport, and there is plenty to be proud of. Even after the last few weeks. Also, if you need anything for the family, let me know. We dont have babies in the house any longer, but we might still be able to pull together a few items to help out.

  7. It does not suprise me that both Trent McCormik, as VP, and Cael Hoover as Pres. were working hard to find a solution to this mess. Both of these men have done nothing but try to treat everyone in the wrestling community fair and equally. I have met and known both for quite a few years and for them to do anything other would be the suprise. I am also sure they were not the only ones trying to resolve this, and for everyone working behind the scenes, I offer a thank you to you as well.

    2.7 - Thunder Claim Mid-States Tournament Title

Crawfordsville, Ind. - Twentieth-ranked Trine scored a 17 point win over Wabash to claim the Mid-States Tournament title Saturday at Wabash College. The Thunder took first place scoring 150 points, Wabash finished with 132.5. Olivet 129, Mount Saint Joseph 95.5 and Manchester 68.5 rounded out the competition.

Next up for the Thunder is the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional February 20 at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa. The event is a qualifier for the NCAA Division III National Championship.

Trace Hall (149, South Bend, Ind./Riley) George Markou (165, Peru, Ind./Peru), Nick Kraus (184, Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) and Alex Fleet (197, Lowell, Mich./Lowell) claimed individual championships.

Three Thunder wrestlers finished second: Ryan Pieper (174, Onsted, Mich./Onsted), Dylan Forbes (285, Wolcottville, Ind./Prairie Heights) and Thomas Pompei  (141, Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) .

Nick Odom (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) finished third in 149. He also recorded three pins, in seven minutes, 52 seconds to win the most falls, least time award. Will Sheets (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) was fourth at 133. Henry Waring (Avilla, Ind./East Noble) finished fifth at 165.

?It?s what we wanted out of it. Our kids wrestled well. They are progressing at the rate we want them to, " Trine Head Coach Dan Callahan said. ?We?ve got a week of hard training ahead and the week after that we?ll be putting the final touches in as we get ready for the regional.?

Eight freshmen and another sophomore placed, in addition to many of Trine stand-by's.

?"We?ve shown some depth. Our young wrestlers did well. Nick and Trace they?ve been wrestling well. I knew Trace was good. He lived-up to my expectations. (Up till now) he hasn?t been able to break our lineup. Given the opportunity, they took advantage of it,? Callahan said.

Callahan was also named Mid-States Coach of the Year by a vote of conference coaches.

?It?s always a goal. You do your best and work will hard. We have a great coaching staff. But, we have great wrestlers and it?s always about them. It?s a team award. It has something to do with coaching, but its more about putting together a team and a program, and that?s what I am proud of.?

  9. I am not a high school coach, but have spent alot of time around the sport. What I would love to to hear from some of the coaches that were in the room as to what happened and why it happened. I want them to tell us how they came to the conclusions that they did, and how they would feel if it was their team that this happened to. I am not going to fault the coaches for putting thier kids on the mat, they do have to wrestle if told this is it, but how much of a fight, or what kind of discussions were there before they got to the point of putting kids on the mat.

  10. Congrats to the Trine Thunder on winning their conference meet today at Wabash. I left before the end, but I know they won the team, and Trace Hall won the 149 pound class in a thrilling 3-1 overtime win over Wabash college wrestler John Dillon. Nick Odom wnet 3-1 and came in 3rd at 149 was awarded the most pins plaque with 3 falls on the day. (sorry, he is my son, so a shameless plug is not out of line for me.)

  11. ahh .. well ..    if they choke their opponents out ..   then kuddos for them!!!.. that means their opponent is weak.. and can't go their knees...and stay square...  and grab three fingers and break/rip the hand away!!!..   force should be met with force!..      this sport isn't nice!

Nor is it brutal. This is not MMA where we practice submission holds.

I dont know for sure what the football hold is that started this, but choking an opponent out is not now, nor should it ever be something to take pride and pleasure in. You wonder why some people want to do away with out sport, look no further then your mirrior as to why. It is people like you that give our sport a bad name. Walking around gloating over the number of kids you or your team,  has choked out. That is rather pathetic. Actually wishing an injury on another person.

  12. What I would like is alot more information, How hard was the slap, did it leave marks, or was it a playful slap upside the head. There are so many unanswered items here to be able to agree or disagree with anything. Were the 2 high schoolers in trouble alot, or was this a 1st time for them, is the middle schooler a kid, or parents with a history of filing complaints, or is this a 1st for them as well. No way any of us can make a choice with the info provided.

As far as blindly following the school administration, I will NEVER make that mistake again. I have seen way to many situations where the school system simply checks the handy dandy all everything book, and never actually looks at the kids involved, and the circumstances. They blindly follow the zero tolerance book, and do whatever it says. If you as a parent dont go in and fight for your kid, the school that is supposed to have their and all the other kids under their watchful eye, will do whatever they can to get rid of them simply because they cant, or wont think for themselves. Are they afraid to actully have to make a choice and think dfor themselves, or is it just easier to pass the responsibility on to the school board.

And before any of you start in on me, I know 1st hand that this can and will happen. Well, at least thats how they do it in  Warren Township

  13. I wish to thank both Roncalli, and New Castle for a great dual meet. One of the wrestlers asked me how I saw it, going into the meet, I told him I had it as a 7-7 wins for each team, and that bonus points would be huge. The final score was in no way indicitave of the wrestling that took place. It was a fabulous meet, and I want to congratulate all wrestlers for a fine performance. Coach Peck, as always you do not suprise me with your comments, you have been if nothing else a model of sportsmanship, and your wrestlers are lucky to have you as thier coach.

  14. I have been reading this topic tonight. I have not decided just where I stand on this issue just yet. The reason for my uncertainty stems from the fact that last week, we were discussing if Kieffer or Wright should injury default the 3rd-4th place match to get to the other side of the bracket from the other for the duration of the tournament. We were all in agreement that the seeding was not done correctly, or atleast was a little odd.

So if you thought it was ok to default in that situation, is it different then this one. Yes the cell phone makes it more of a question mark, but basically you are just changing the mode with which you recieved the information. One being a poor seeding, the other a cell phone, but in both cases, you would be asking your wrestler to do something to improve his chances of moving on in the tournament based on information you had prior to the next weeks matches.

I dont know that I would call either circumstance unethical, but I would agree that it is unsportsman like in appearance. We teach or kids to go out, work hard, do the best you can, and try to win within the rules. No rules were broken, they may have been bent.
