  1. They haven't started yet, but I was just informed that Illinois' 132 (sorry for the incorrect info earlier, I have confirmed it was 4th place finisher Michael Sepke) was hit by a car last night outside the venue and is in Indianapolis today for surgery to repair an injury to his pelvis. Obviously, everyone's thoughts are with the wrestler and his family. Hope everything goes well for him today.

I spoke to an Illinois parent this afternoon and he advised that Michael's pelvis was completely shattered, and was surgically repaired with a plate, pins, screws, and lots of stitches. He is wrestling "comfortably" at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he will remain another 4-5 days. The driver of the mini van was not found to be at fault, and the front of his vehicle looked as if he had hit a deer according to the witnesses.

Michael was crossing US Hwy 231 near I-74, as he was returning to the hotel from the Burger King across the street. Both Michael and the driver were in shock at the scene, and the driver was also transported to the hospital where he was later released. The doctor's allegedly stated that Michael was extremely lucky to have survived the accident. This information, of course, is all second hand from the parent of another Illinois team member. Good luck to Michael!

  2. Tre Blackwelll from Kentucky pins B. James.  Wonder what the score was before the pin?

Blackwell did win Mater Dei I believe

Blackwell did not wrestle at Mater Dei in 2011, as he was injured. He was there, however, in 2010 and I believe wrestled Wyatt Seng, MD, in the finals.

  3. I was fortunate enough to watch the Tsirtsis brothers today at the UNIDOME. I have to say that I am so proud to be a part of their organization, leadership, and vision. Both brothers are wonderful examples to my son and they have helped him tremendously. Thanks Alex and Jason! You guys are class acts!!!

On another note, it was the WHO'S WHO of wrestling in Cedar Falls at the USAW Folkstyle Nationals. I was standing there matside watching Jason Tsirtsis defeat Darion Caldwell all the while Cael Sanderson was standing adjacent to me talking to Kevin Jackson. Next to them was Barry Davis. The list goes on and on...it was like wrestling heaven for a person like me! LOL-----good stuff!

I, too, had the opportunity to watch Jason and Alex wrestle this weekend, as I was in Cedar Falls to officiate the National Folkstyle championships. Lots of great wrestling on both the Folkstyle and Freestyle side of things. Jason looked great, and Alex was very impressive after being away from competition for about three years. There were indeed lots of great wrestlers and coaches present, including Dan Gable himself!

Also, when we left around noon today Daniel Bedoy was still alive in the Greco tournament, having gone 2-1 when I last spoke to him. The most famous person I saw, however, was probably the one and only J-U-L-I-O  :o

  5. So far the announcer has mispronounced almost every Indiana wrestler's name. The most impressive, however, was Durrel Peepers from Maryville HS, and his coach, Davis Maldonado  ;D

  6. I believe that the Duneland Conference (Crown Point, Merrillville, Lake Central, Portage, Chesterton, Valparaiso, Laporte and Michigan City) had 10 placers of the 112 medal winners... or 9%

    Crown Point: Schurg-113  Tsirtsis-145 Kral-220

    Merrillville: Garcia-120 Stevenson-160 Peppers-170 Berry-195

    Portage: Torres-126

    Lace Central: Ayersman-126  Robinson-220

Valparaiso, Laporte, Chesterton and Michigan City: None
