  1. Yeah I dunno about turf but something needs to be down...these mats will never move aside from cleaning under them once every few months as MattyB mentioned no matter how clean you keep the top some Ick gets through

You might contact Matt Behling @ CMA about the exact material under their mats.  It is some sort of stiff closed cell foam about 2 inches thick.  It really makes the surface more forgiving without changing the fundamental feel of the mats on top.  Those mats do not get moved either, the surface underneath would not be good for other activity.  It just provides an extra level of impact absorption.  When I coached in Colorado we double layered the mats which had the same effect.  Seemed to reduce injuries, but I don't have data to back that up.

  2. Not sure what the surface under the mats is, but if it is concrete having a layer of padding under the mats is a huge benefit.  We did that in s room remodel and it makes a world of difference.  That is the only structural advice.  If you are adding any "equipment" I'd suggest looking at Suples Supply (https://suples.com/).  They have some great wrestling specific items.  Some of which need attachments points in the room, others of which can be used "stand alone".

  3. Here is a lineup of IN wrestlers listed in TrackW for this weekends.  Brackets are not yet posted.

    Clouse, dalton Junior 220   0-2

    Hillenburg, Harley Junior 285 0-2

Good competition. I will note that many of the IN wrestlers were up a weight from the season and I am seeing lots of guys from other states (at least in Juniors) wrestling the same as their HS season.

  4. Bronze certification is good forever. You can also utilize the certification in ALL USAW events.

$75 to coach is way more than ridiculous at an event.

I agree it is ridiculous.  My beef with the Bronze, is that the "course" is ridiculous.  If you've been coaching for 20+ years it is just hoop jumping.  I get the idea of having a certification course in place. I just think if you have either copper or bronze it's pretty much 6 of one half dozen of the other.  So be up front and just make a fee to skip up, or ditch the copper altogether and just make everyone do bronze right off the bat....

In the end, nobody stopped me from coaching with the copper band on.  I just had to buy a ticket to the session (for $26).  Not a big deal, but I doubt USA wrestling sees much of that money compared to the venue.  If they'd just given an 'upcharge' to go to bronze, they'd have gotten all of that.

Basically I just shouldn't get on here if I'm a little peeved about something that's no big deal.  Better to just chill out

  5. Seems like with more and more national opportunities are being created for our youth wrestlers, the usaw events are becoming less of a priority (especially the folkstyle event). I know a ton of our stud wrestlers will be wrestling in Iowa this weekend... but in DesMoines and not Cedar Falls. May continue to be a dry spell for Indiana for a while.

Since USAW is requiring Bronze certification to coach cadets/juniors this is also a racket.  Just add a fee, but making me take the "bronze course" for $80 is a joke.  Saying you can coach a  kid that is 14 with Copper, but then not a kid who is 17 without Bronze is a joke.  Same style, same rules...  Just say you want the money.

We'll definitely hit FloNat's next year instead.  They might charge $75 for a coach registration, but at least they're up front that its just a fee.

  6. In my awesome(depending on who you are) opinion, I think that their reasoning is a cheap copout. Referees already tighten up the boundaries in instances where there is a wall or table near the edge. If schools are still using old mats with very little out of bounds space then those mats are probably more of a safety hazard as they are probably harder than the gym floor.

One of the more interesting things is that so many off-season events have college out of bounds that kids adjust to it much quicker than many would expect.

I thought the appropriate response to comments including officiating was: http://indianamat.com/index.php/topic/51470-becoming-a-licensed-ihsaa-referee/

  7. And definitely not a lot of IN representation at the CK USAW event for sure. Guess #SpringBreak in Iowa just doesn't appeal to the millenials.

But we are sending some quality kids.  I'm taking a couple of guys over and looking forward to seeing how we stack up against some state champs from other states.  The plus side of not too many IN guys is that we don't have to drive 6 hours to wrestle somebody we live an hour away from!

  8. Here's an example where a top recruit is not staying @ Penn State so he can be a starter elsewhere:

Nevills was regarded as the No. 47 overall senior recruit in the country coming out of high school by Flo Wrestling in 2016. He signed with Penn State, joining older brother Nick Nevills with the Nittany Lions, who have won six of the past seven NCAA Division I team titles.

As a grayshirt, AJ Nevills never enrolled at Penn State, but did train with the Nittany Lions Wrestling Club under coach Cael Sanderson. Nevills will enter Fresno State as a freshman with a redshirt year available.

“I can’t put into words the lessons and values the coaches at Penn State have taught me,” Nevills said.

Nevills competed at 220 pounds at Clovis as a senior, when he beat Poway’s Chris Bailey for the state title. He has since moved up in weight, where he would have had to compete against brother Nick, a sophomore who became a first-time All-American with a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds during the NCAA Division I Championships last weekend.

“I’d rather wrestle against him than have to wrestle him for a spot in the lineup,” AJ Nevills said. “That was a main reason (for leaving Penn State.) And I really do believe in the (Fresno State) coaches.”

  9. That and all of their athletic and university allotted academic scholarship money being tied up with other wrestlers for the next several years. Paying your own way and possibly not even being a starter for your first few years would turn a few top guys away.

True, that's where other schools have to step up.  One of the interesting things about wrestling recruiting is getting guys at the right weight.  If there is a stack-up at Penn State, then some top guys will end up elsewhere over the next couple of years

  10. Success breeds success.  The only thing stopping a top recruit from going to Penn State is not fitting the mold of what Penn State expects beyond wrestling talent.  Other programs are going to have to start taking guys who know they won't break the Penn State line-up and then developing them...

  11. Tsirtsis was looking a bit "plump" when I saw him wrestle at the Midlands back in late December. With that said, I think 149 would be a much better choice than 157 in my honest opinion.

I certainly think choosing a weight where he is fit and competitive is more important than worrying about competition.  Choosing between Nolf and Retherford is like flipping a 2 headed coin  (and calling tails).  But hey, that's why they wrestle them right?  Just ask IMAR or Dean; not to mention Gillman, Valencia, Jordan... to name a few.

  12. I don't actually think a smaller venue would make much change to the atmosphere.  In BL most of the 'empty seats' are just the "nose bleed" seats.  The area close to the wrestling is still pretty much packed.  So I don't think you get an 'empty' sort of feeling that happens in some cases when the venue is much too large for the event. I am also curious about the capacity of BL because it seems like some of the seating is retracted, so I'm not sure how many empty seats there actually are.

  13. What does that mean?  Has he been coached by Cael and wrestling with the varsity in the room?

My understanding is that the club does NOT practice with the "Penn State Team" at all.  At least during certain portions of the season per NCAA guidelines.  It is likely that members of the 'staff' do run club practices etc....  I would imagine in the off season, when many of the college athletes are competing for the club in freestyle, then the guidelines change.

  14. We are seeing very low success rates for the 4th place finishers, so it suggests we'd have most all the kids with realistic SS advancement potential in the field.

Should we go back to Top 3? Yes, but only if there were full wrestlebacks at Reg.

Yes, as it appears there is a substantially dropoff (on average) from the 3 to 4 spot (at least in terms of SS performance)

Would you then also make true wrestlebacks @ the SS level?

  15. I would say yes. It is exceptionally easier to qualify for SS when you take 4 instead of 3.

I think technically it is twice as easy (at least without wrestlebacks).

Take top 3 of 8 means Win,Loss, Win gets you to 3rd. Take top 4 means Win, Loss, Loss gets you in.  So you have to win twice as many matches to get in IF you have no wrestle-backs AND only take 3.

    Not sure why this  matters...
