KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC) won a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on the first day of the highly- respected Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix. In the finals, Howe lost to Ahmed Gadzhimagomedov of Russia in the finals, 2-2. The Russian led 2-0, when Howe scored twice in the final minute. The Russian won the tie-breaker by having the highest value scoring move, a two-pointer. Gadzhimagomedov has previously won gold medals at the Ramzan Kadirov Cup, the Moscow Lights and the Intercontinental Cup tournaments in Russia, as well as the Copa Brazil and the Ukrainian Memorial International. Howe scored a 5-2 win over Boris Makoev of Russia in the semifinals. Makoev was second at the 2013 Dave Schultz Memorial in the USA Howe was an NCAA champion and four-time All-American, competing first for Wisconsin and then for Oklahoma. He was second in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He was attempting to become the 11th American men’s freestyle wrestler to win this event, considered one of the toughest in the world each year. The last American men’s freestyler to win was Steve Mocco, the heavyweight champion in 2009. Five U.S. women have won this event, but Team USA did not have any women entries this year. Eliminated were the two U.S. entries at 57 kg/125 lbs., 2014 U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) and Matt McDonough (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC).
