  1. The question was about joining the GIRLS volleyball team, not whether certain schools have started one for boys. I have serious doubts that there is any case of a boy being allowed to participate on a girl's team at the high school level. In fact, I would be shocked if someone could produce an example. Nature has simply decided against it. The only way girls are able to be successful in wrestling is by staying in the lower weights where they can take advantage of the lag in boys' physical development. So you have girls that are muscularly well developed wrestling against boys who are in the early and awkward stages of puberty. This is generally true even if a boy and a girl are the same age -- girls physically develop much faster and stay much lighter. This is why you do not see girls having any success at higher weight classes where both contestants are physically mature, and I would be willing to bet that in the matches that the lighter girls lose their opponent is most often in that extremely small percentage of males who physically mature but remain light (probably because they are short).

That said, as others (including myself) have repeated, the issue is not about who wins and loses in inter-sex matches. I don't care if a woman were able to win an NCAA championship, that would not justify the practice.

When I was in high school in the mid '70s,  SB St Joe had a 6'7" guy playing on the girls volleyball team.  I think he helped them make it to  Semi-State.  I think I heard that there was a change in the rules so that can't happen again.  Someone might be able to shed some more light on this.

  2. Terry Perkey is also a two time placer.

There is a state qualifier not listed on the web site: 1977, Leroy Heller, 177 pounder.

Campbell was an animal, but Shane is the best from Jimtown... so far.

    Not so sure about that.

Didn't Campbell get to State without being scored upon in '68?  Pretty impressive.  Then there is Konrath.  Easily could have been the best at Jimtown if he would have had his head on straight his Senior year.  Beat Stahl 4 times that year only to tank in the State meet.  Stahl has to be greatful, AND laughing as he looks at his State Championship medal.

  3. If he beat the other kid 6 or 7 times I doubt seriously the smaller division state champ was getting more recruiting looks.

Thinking some one "probably" is getting more recruiting looks. seems like fairly flimsy evidence to be passionately against class wrestling.  But too each his own.

Just wondering if we have figured out whether tennis is classed in indiana or not??

Tennis is NOT classed in Indiana.

  4. Get used to it.....the next 50+ will seem to disappear in a heartbeat.  Especially when you have children and they are growing up.  Unbelievable.

I second that.  My last is a Sophomore.  Less than 2 1/2 years and I'm an "Empty Nester."  :-X  :-X

  5. whatever floats your boat......

i did do a little research about th sport declining in our youth and I found a CNN study:

Curiously, the one sport that has seen a decline is Little League Baseball, America's pastime. There has been a 1 percent decrease in enrollment every year since its peak in 1996. The organization attributed the decline to the myriad other options available to kids

Yes.  A decline in:  "Little League" Baseball.  Not "Youth" Baseball.

The other options also include:  Babe Ruth Baseball, Cal Ripken Baseball, and the "Travelling" Baseball teams.

There are still over 2.2 million participants.  Not too shabby.

  6. I just did some quick adding and I noticed Mishawaka's incredible numbers:

    Total Points Scored: 1,585

    Total Points Allowed: 281

Number of times holding a team under 10 points: 16 (out of 28)

Post season scoring: Mishawaka: 139 Opposition: -1

Wrestlers with less than 10 losses on the season: 11

    YES!!!!!!!

    The -1 came from Jimtown!!!!!!!!!

  7. Johnson - Jones was the best wrestler at the tournament (189).  He threw Sliga last week and stuck him early in the second period at Semi-State.  He beat Atwood in the finals under the lights. hhhmmmm enough said.  Got to love the Tiger.  By the way go to this link to see some good pics.

Look under IHSAA state wrestling finals

WHO THE HECK IS SEAN McMURPHY?????????  ;D    ;D    ;D

    Gotta love those newspaper guys.

(Scroll through all of the pictures.)

  8. Beauty!  Kinda of tells you why we are still at M'ville for the SS.  These clowns couldn't find metal attitude if it bit them in their fatty beaucratic butts.  Gosh, I can't wait till the State Legislature buts them out of business.

Are you saying that the State could do a better job  than the IHSAA????

I'm not too fond of the IHSAA either.  But to think the State could do better with an appointed council???????  I would have to differ on that one.  ???  ???  ???

  9. Good article and intereting perspective.  I wonder what made the Stahl family choose Mishawaka over other schools like Penn, Concord, Jimtown, etc.

For what it's worth.    I heard that he already had some really good relationships with a lot of Mishawaka wrestlers from off-season wrestling.  Add that with the power of Mishawaka's program, and it makes it a no-brainer.  (We would have loved him to come to Jimtown.)

  10. After seeing how ridiculous Yorktown's lineup is, I wanted to see where I thought they would fall against Mishawaka.

Let me know what you think:

    103-Bevans m.d. Martsolf     4-0

    112-Beck p. Phillips                 4-6

    119-Anderson d. Binion        7-6

    125-Bevans d. Wisler             10-6

130-Jackson d. Schrader     13-6  Did not think Jackson was this good until tonight.

    135-Hiestand d. Guerra      16-6

    140-Eddy m.d. Rench          20-6

    145-Harper p. Marshall     26-6

    152-Stahl p. Smith               26-12

    160-White p. Higgins          26-18

    171-Morin d. Castner          26-21   This one is definitely a toss-up

    189-Brown m.d. Abu-Shehab 30-21

    215-Lentz p. Neff                 30-27

    285-Thomas d. Janney     30-30

I have seen both of these teams multiple times and really believe that none of these picks are a stretch. Yorktown is the only team left in the state that has a shot at Mishawaka. (Of course, they have to get there first)

You gave Yorktown the points at 140 for Eddy's MD.  That would make it Mishawaka 34-26 over Yorktown.

  11.

    215

    1. Lentz (Mishawaka)

    2. McDaniel (SB Washington)

    3. Reagan (Penn)

    4. Gallegos (SB Clay)

Watch out for Deering of Mishawaka Marian.  He is a transfer from Jimtown, and is making some waves.  He just won the 215 class at the Culver Military Tourney this past weekend.  He has to wrestle Lentz in the second round, they both have byes, so I would expect him to wrestle back tough in the loser's bracket.
