Who would you consider more elite IN State Champ or National Title holders?
Ayersman or Brooks.....Cody Phillips or Sliga .....Boston or Micic?
I get what you are asking, and I'd say in Indiana everyone that follows wrestling knows about the high school state tournament, but not everyone knows what Super32 or even Fargo means. So I think it comes down to this, in Indiana the high school state tourney means more, out side of Indiana our high school tourney doesn't mean very much. I think this is reflected in the in state versus out of state recruiting as well.
-
Yeah multi-time state champ does change things a bit, but at the same time there have been quite a few people in IN with more than 1 state title but as far as I know, there have only been 2 Super 32 champs, and I believe there have only been 2 kids from IN to ever win a Fargo title as a first year Cadet...Sliga and Micic
So Sliga and Micic have potential to be the most accomplished High School wrestlers in the History of IN wrestling.
Pretty bold statement, especially with Tsirtsis going for his 4 th state title and 2 more going for a third this year and Sliga and Micic have exactly 0 State titles between them

An 80-4 record and two 3rd place finishes after two years, I would hate to see if folkstyle was his strong suit.
His losses are to:
Braden Atwood- Nationally ranked as a redshirt freshman at Purdue
Michael Johnson-Jones- JUCO All-American
Michael Duckworth- DI Wrestler
Aaron Stevenson- 2nd, 3rd in high school and having a solid season at U of Indy
I guess the other 189/195lbers in the state are glad folkstyle isn't "his strong suit."
Not to mention a Cadet's USWA Folkstyle National Title, and 3rd place this year at Super32

Good to get the Johnson's straightened out anyway.
LOL. Too many responses coming to mind.
-
There will be at least three undefeateds that will be no more. Should be awesome, I think the Johnson Harvey matchup and Willis Masingale matchups are the most interesting. Two opposite styles going at it bothe ranked 1 & 2 can't wait.
I agree. I predict a new #1 ranking at both 160 and 170.

The elementary team finished 5th overall.
Great showing! -- that is a beast of tourney. Do you know where we can view the results?
-
Wow no love for Sliga on Intermat --- Unless I missed something
-
112: B Phillips v Orzechowicz, and Price v Schroeder
119: Carroll v Boston - (good 1 v 4)
145: Lunford v Matteson

How is Berry's endurance though? He's a big guy, can he hang with these guys for 3 hard periods or will he get gassed? I've never seen him, just heard about him.
Again only saw him at the Al Smith but he pushed the pace in the matches I saw.
In the finals he was a take down machine, looked like he could go for days. I don't think his endurance will be an issue.

What a great match up -- Fun to see the depth at a big guy weight.
From what I've seen it's a 3 dog race between Stevenson, Sliga and Berry (haven't seen Garret Goldman - so I can't really comment)
I would have said only 2 until seeing Berry at the Al Smith.
That being said...
In Semi's -- I'll go with Sliga over Stevenson in a tight one -I give the edge to Sliga on the feet and the edge to Stevenson on the mat. The difference coming down Stevenson failing to score a takedown due to Sliga's freakish splits on the edge of the mat.
Sliga obviously had a GREAT summer and he just keeps getting better - scary better. Stevenson missed a lot of the summer with injury (knee - I'm pretty sure) - Just trying to find any edge I can as these 2 are both great
Finals -- Sliga over Berry for the championship. If this match up happens it will be interesting to see how/if Sliga handles the strength and aggression of Berry.
Regardless of the outcomes - should be exciting to watch and they are great kids that represent our state well.
-
I would guess that most people who didn't win their own semi-state would have strong chance of facing 3 semi-state champions in order to win state.
A better questions would be how many wrestler facing 3 former state finalist or 3 state champions on their way to a win state. That may be a very smaller list.
Most recently:
Francisco Porras, last year, beat 3 #1's - P.J.Montgomery in quarters (Eville SS), Kirk Johnson in semis(NC SS) and Justin Beck (FW-SS) in finals...
and the year before Camden Eppert beat 3 #1's - Jared Brooks in quarters (mville-SS); Casey Kenny in semi's (FW-SS) and Brandon Wright in finals (NC-SS)
Kenny was the one I could not come up with last night...
But this certainly demonstrates what a tough road it makes to have to go through 3 #1 seeds...
-
cody may have the toughest road to a state title. if que wins friday and brooks can beat price and if shepard or todd wins the over side that would be matches against 3 ss champs. my question is has anyone ever defeated 3 ss champs on their way to winning a state title?
I believe Eppert did his senior year.
His Saturday matches were:
Brooks
???
Wright
Of course It all hinges on who he wrestled in the semi's and it escapes me
-
Pauly just seems to fly under the radar all the time , and then bam he hits you like a boulder , Petrov, Todd , Phillips , and Brooks is there any better top four in any weight class ?
Throw in LeCount who has been lights out this year too (If he can get past Price - makes for a very interesting weight class for Conseco - some possible tough 2-3 match-ups Friday night)
-
It's possible to have 4 undefeated at 171 too:
E-ville - Drake Stein - Princeton; 38-0
M-ville - Tanner Lynde - Delphi; 39-0
FW - Jackson Bratcher - Eastbrook; 37-0 (possible match-up with Hankenson - Bellmont in finals)
NC - Nick Manning - South Dearborn; 26-0 (could have tough match up with Micheal Smith (NC) in semis)
-
Brooks lost to a tough Michigan kid by DQ, from a questionable call.
Thanks for the update
-
On the M-ville SS brackets Brooks' record is listed as 23-1. Is this correct, if so who is the loss to?
-
Classic! Another vote for Post of the year.
I'll 3rd that.
And count me as one towards the 6.5...
-
Grubb beats Thatcher - pretty close
Meyer pins Forrest
-
Kieffer loses in the tiebreaker
Raley wins by pin in the first period to advance to the semis
Raley's match can be viewed on Flo -- It was 3rd period pin and a hard fought very exciting match
-
It's too bad he'll have to wrestle Ormsbee with little rest - Ormsbee looked good in the 2 matches I saw - but he wasn't wrestling Jason...
-
Here's a link to an article from theMat featuring Mitch's run for the Triple Crown - He is the only cadet with a chance as Zane Richards lost in the RR

Especially tough with how quickly he had to wrestle the second match
-
1 match away from the triple crown!
-
I could not agree more -- Y2 coverage has been excellent -- even witty.
Thanks and please keep it up.

Sorry this is off topic a little but....
If a smaller school bumps up that would bump out a larger school. Are we overcompensating?
