  1. This one has floored me!  I was expecting Wright to win the entire tourney this year.  FANTASTIC job by young Kieffer, what an achievement!

This was in the semi-finals so Wright is still alive.

  2. It probably was Albertson, very good kid. Have no idea what he would have been apologizing for.

Damon's pin at 189 was HUGE!  Here is a kid that is MANY pounds underweight and has only been wrestling for a couple of years, but he makes up for his shortcomings with a big heart and determination.  He comes from a great family of educators and is a great kid.

Coach Peck always has the Trojans ready and they are very tough.  Best of luck to the Rebels and Trojans as they move forward this season.

  3. So act like it. A true fan never picks their team to lose by 20 publicly. I also find it hard to believe a "true" fan would put out "their" teams roster any time, let alone so close to a big dual.

    Oh brother!  ::)

I have watched Cathedral and Roncalli several times this season and I made an educated guess on the outcome.  Maybe the Rebels used my prediction as motivation!  The Rebel lineup was provided earlier in the topic, I only responded.  This is the same lineup which the Rebels have used all season and which has been discussed many times on this forum.  I am, first and foremost, a wrestling fan and I have been since I first strapped on the headgear in 1969.  I am tied to the Rebel program but I also support the Irish and I follow both teams very closely.

  4. He has been in the hospital recently and I'm pretty sure they didn't want to risk his health for one match...Even though Gino would of had the pin at 140 and he would have gave them the W.

    Right!  :'(

Remember, the Rebels were without Bartley who would have won by pin at 189 if necessary.  Albertson is a 163 pound sophomore with only two years of wrestling experience and he still won by decision at 189.  Masengale is a senior who hadn't wrestled since 8th grade and he still beat Stokes at HWT.

It is a bummer that the Irish lost Wright, Roytek, and McGinley to transfer.  But the Rebels are on the rise with only five senior starters on a roster of over 40 and a JV team which is 29-2 (plus four tournament titles) in the past two seasons including a 56-16 victory over Cathedral last night.

  5. Roncalli is a very good tournament team but they are weak in the middle, thus not a very good dual team.

103 - King has been lackluster, Venezia wins (3-0 Cath)

112 - Davis is coming on but still can't beat Harvey (6-0 Cath)

    119 - Josh Kieffer by fall (6-6)

125 - Justin Kieffer by fall (12-6 Ronc)

130 - Close match to Stringfield (12-9 Ronc)

    135 - Gillum by fall (12-15 Cath)

140 - Close match to Oskins (12-18 Cath)

    145 - Zeilinski decision (15-18 Cath)

    152 - Neiberger major (15-22 Cath)

    160 - Willis by fall (15-28 Cath)

    171 - Bartley by fall (21-28 Cath)

189 - Albertson has a big heart but only weighs 163, Hackl major (21-32 Cath)

215 - Tucker is a moose but this is his 1st year, Buchanan by fall (21-38 Cath)

HWT - Masengale is a green 1st year senior, Stokes decision (21-41 Cath)

  7. I came across this site on Facebook and just had to put it on here.

    www.savingwrestling.com

I'm not exactly sure what Title IX has done to wrestling, but I heard that around 200 collegiate wrestling programs had been dropped since it was established in the 70's.

Fresno State, Oregon, Notre Dame, and BYU (just to name a few popular ones.)

What can we do to save this sport?

Title IX has nearly destroyed college wrestling.  It destroyed my collegiate program at Franklin.  We were a strong NCAA Division II program with a long history of defeating Division I schools (ND, Kentucky, Western Mich, Evansville, UT Chatt, Valpo, etc.) in the years just prior to the program ending in 1982.  At that time, Indiana had several small school programs in addition to Franklin which have dropped the sport such as Earlham, Anderson, Huntington, Hanover, Taylor, Evansville, Valpo, Rose-Hulman, and DePauw.

  8.

    Roncalli's 103 beat our 103

Due to illness, Roncalli had to use their JV wrestlers at 103 and 112.  Bailey (103) and McGinley (112 for the day) got a call from Coach Ellis at 6:30 AM on Saturday.  The varsity wrestlers, King (103) and Davis (112) both caught the flu after Friday's practice.  Bailey and McGinley both are actually 103 pound freshman and they both wrestled very hard.

  9. 103 Newkirk (LC) over King (Roncalli)

112 Parham (Carmel) over Davis (Roncalli)

119 Josh Kieffer (Roncalli) over Butts (LC)

125 Wright (WC) over Justin Kieffer (Roncalli)

130 Joe Kieffer (Roncalli) over Thomas (WC)

135 Watson (Carmel) over Grayson (Laf Jeff)

140 Scurria (Carmel) over Adrian Brown (Laf Jeff)

    145 Decker (WC) over ??

152 Frascella (Carmel) over Taylor (LC)

160 Anderson (Carmel) over Holt (ColNorth)

171 Bartley (Roncalli) inj default Ellis (Carmel)

    189 Jones (WC) over ??

215 Vince (LafJeff)? over Morris (Carmel)

285 ?? (WC) over Massengale (Roncalli)

Carmel won 5 of 7 in the championships with one inj default (possible broken ankle) and one who werstled up in weight as well. Warren Central winner at 285 was their 215 who weighed 209, great matchup.  Wright over Keiffer was a great match, Wright looked very good all day. Carmel also forfeited at 103 and was missing their upper weights due to football.

Good tournament for Roncalli HWT Masengale.  He is a senior but hadn't wrestled a match since 8th grade!

  10. No kidding, that Graham, ohio probably ain't too shaby either.

St. Paris Graham is a very small school north of Dayton.  They are awesome every year.  The Schlatter brothers (Iowa and Minnesota) plus several other top DI wrestlers are from Graham.  Every year they had some "mystery transfers".  They have won the Ohio DII State Title several years in a row and have won the Beast of the East and Medina tournaments several times (considered toughest tournaments in nation).  They battle Blair Academy in the national rankings each year.  I previously coached in Ohio and wrestled Graham every year in a dual and at Regions.  One year we had our best team in school history, we won two large tournaments, won conference, and were 13-0 in duals heading into Graham dual.  We thought we had a shot against them.  They beat us 63-3 in front of 3,000 crazy fans on a Tuesday night!

  11. New Castle won the first match against the Rebels but Roncalli?s much tougher schedule should help them.  The Rebels must win as many matches from 103 to 135 since they really drop off in the upper weights.
