IU and Purdue need to make some coaching changes. It's that simple.
I like Hinkel and I think he's a good leader/administrator. I feel with the right assistants they could be good. The guys at Purdue seem to wrestle and compete with a lot more joy and fire. Practice partners and atmosphere are a big part of recruiting talent. Practice partners (groups of weights) have everything to do with assistants. IU needs to gut the staff and start over. You HAVE TO have coaches that are a recruiting draw. Having great coaches is step #1 in consistently attracting good kids. These kids aren't stupid.

So stupid

Nailed itHuh? I post about and follow IU wrestling as much as anyone on here. I don't always dog on them. That's just simply not true. I'm interested in IU being a solid program. People don't comment on the program (good or bad) because nobody follows the program.... because the university seemingly doesn't care that they're languishing near the bottom of the conference every year. It's cyclical.
If fans don't care that the team is consistently one of the worst in the conference, neither will the school. It's that simple. You've mentioned several times that they will be "fine." My guess is this year fine = bottom 3 at Big 10's... again.

Team Scores heading on to Sunday:

2. Iowa 121.0
3. Minnesota 86.0
4. Ohio State 73.5
5. Illinois 69.5
6. Nebraska 68.0
7. Wisconsin 58.0
8. Michigan 49.5
9. Northwestern 44.0
10. Indiana 34.0
11. Purdue 30.0
12. Michigan State 15.0
Thoughts:
Burak losing to McIntosh in OT really hurt the hawkeyes.
Minnesota choked bad this afternoon (after winning national duals)
Delgado stalled shamelessly against Clark to win in the semi's. I think Megaludis puts it together tomorrow.
Quiroga had Ramos beat. I gotta think if Cashe had stayed healthy throughout his career he would have done big things. He's still the last guy you'd want next weekend. Dangerous.
Sabotello gave Dardanes everything he could handle. Good showing for him.
Tsirtsis is peaking. He looks fresh and real sharp technically and position/strategy wise.
I was disappointed to see nelsen lose to trimble but he wrestled back well.
Isaac Jordan deserved to lose that match against St John.
I said it all year, Walsh is not going to beat top tier guys with that lazy style come tournament time and he got majored 10-1 by Ness. He could see Ness again for placement tomorrow if he pulls something off against Jordan.
David Taylor is on another planet right now. TF over NEB kid and stuck Jackson Morse in 40 seconds in the semi's. I bet he pins Moore tomorrow.
Kokesh, Evans, Storley and Brown are very close.
Ruth v Lofthouse will be one sided
Coon loses to Gingrich and then again to freshman Tavenello. So much for that. Hope he get's a bid for NCAA's.
Chalfant going BEASTMODE but I think Nelson will block and stall and ankle bite him to death in the finals.
IU... Purdue... Michigan State.......................................... ugh
#3 in the EIWA Rutgers and #5 in the ACC Maryland come in next year to shake things up at the bottom.

It's ultimately coaching and development draws IMO. Practice partners also play a big role in the equation, which are also affected by coaches. Unless there are coaches who these blue chip athletes believe can continue to develop them at the next level, why would they ever attend IU or PU? Without DuBuque, there is no Hoosier Escobedo. Without Mena, there is no Hoosier DuBuque. Why is that not on the wrestlers then? Let's support the ones who do stay in state, and do believe they can get it done.
That's why I respect Angel; he manned up, made a decision early and got it done in-state, he didn't make hissy fits or play
recruiting games, nor did he need or try to ride on the coat-tails of others.
I think Jason Tsirstis is one who could get it done where ever he goes; he is the only in-state guy in the last 2-3 years that
I was disappointed to not see him stay in-state.
At the same time, good luck if you want to go out of state. I don't fault guys who want a change of scenery out east or west, good luck. I do think though, there are some coaches who talk a game about the need for In-State loyalty by the universities, then pushing their Tier I guys out of state, while expecting the IU's & PU's to take their 2nd & 3rd Tier guys.
I think it's been great to get Fleeger back at PU and I think it would make a big difference if they'd replace Rogers with a top tier Senior level upper weight. Bryce Hasseman would've been an OK choice.
-
I think Red pinned everyone through the entire tournament series except a couple guys, Forrest being one of them.
-
I've thought the same thingAs I was watching a middle school match tonight I wondered why is the full nelson so bad I think we need to bring it back. I bet kids would learn to wrestle with there heads up..

Huge fall for Dylan Ness made the difference. Gophers capture the Big10 dual meet title.

Doubt itDo you think New Pal can beat the defending sectional champs?
-
You know what they say, "It's better to have to calm them down, than fire them up."
-
You act like Evans is the first guy in college wrestling with a mean streak.
-
Yep. Heavyweight is wide open. I think there is a pretty clear top 8 but any one of those guys could get hot and win.
