  1. My feeling was it maybe something he felt he needed to do in order to expand the depth of his coaching resume.  Pritz has been trying to court a head coaching job at a big school lately but hadn't obtained one.  Since he's not going to take over the reigns at Wisconsin soon this maybe a way to show the next set of perspective schools he has a wider body of work in developing athletes and a team.

As for Howe losing coaches Pritzlaff, Ruschell, and maybe Frayer too, along with the graduation of one practice partner does put him in a little bit of a bind. I'm guessing he has the preparation and mindset to make it through in Wisconsin, but it does put pressure on Coach Davis to get someone in there quick that is able to work with and help Howe.

That all makes sense. I would be surprised if he doesn't take an Olympic Redshirt to prep if he is able. Any chance Wisconsin can pick up someone from another school who just graduated and wants some experience? I know I'm impressed with Davis' knowledge but I don't know anything about how easy he is to get along with.

  2. Fort Wayne community get a middle school program?  That will not be happening unfortunately.  We will be lucky if the high school coaches even get paid pretty soon.  Things are not looking the greatest in our school systems and right now the state is picking on inner city schools.  But don't think your school is safe, just give it some time.  (unless it is a private school)

Back in the 90's and before FW schools used to pull more than just their weight.  It is not the coaching; it is the system, which isn't going to be changing for the better anytime soon.  It is in a vicious cycle that is setup for failure in my opinion.  Our representative wants to privatize schools and one of the ways to do that is show the current system is failing.  What is the best way to that?  Undercut any chance for public schools to move forward and show progress. Right now they are directing their attention to inner city schools because they are easy targets but other schools will be next guaranteed.  I truly believe that paid coaching will be one of the next things to go.  I know we don't do it for the money but I know some coaches that can't afford to spend that much time doing something without some kind of compensation.

Here are a couple examples of bias coming out of the state concerning public schools.

    1.  The voucher program.  (State money will follow the student)  So in essence you can send your kid to a private school if you want.  Sound like a good idea?

Problem with this is that both private and public schools will be measured by the same standards, yet the private school can choose which students to accept.

    2.  The state is constantly talking about keeping the best and the brightest in Indiana.  But yet they are cutting pay raises for teachers that get their Masters?

    3.  I have heard "My Man Mitch" who I voted for 2X (regrettably) say teachers make more than the average person in Indiana.  Hmmm....  Could that be because they have a 4 year degree?

    4. Any vacated school a private school gets first shot at it and gets tax breaks if they move in to it.  This sounds like ?hey lets close these public schools so a private school can take over this building.?

    5.  The state is now trying to judge the teacher?s on the student?s performance.  If that doesn?t sound like over simplifying a complex situation I don?t know what does.  In my opinion parents have allot more to do with student?s performance than a teacher does.  But hey we live in a society of enabling and we possibly couldn?t point the finger at parents.

Sorry I will get off of my soup box but I see this as the root of FW community issues even with sports.  By the way I am not a teacher therefore I can say this stuff.

    Amen!

And there is a big teacher shortage now, especially in the sciences. Anyone who thinks teachers are overpaid, or even paid more than average, should see how they do. I managed to make $4 an hour at one of the best districts in the state before I got out after 2 years.

And before anyone tries to make personal attacks my students did well above average on the AP exam, placed 5th in the state in a chemistry competition, and have done very well in college. I didn't get out because I couldn't hack it, I got out because of the Republican anti-education agenda.

  3. Definitely do what the college coach tells you. Otherwise it depends a lot on the weight class. You'll need lots of endurance, so lower weights and higher reps will be a big benefit. If you're looking at heavyweight you want as much strength and lots of core work to give you better stability and balance. Outside the gym, lots of speed work and footwork is a must, stair work strengthening your feet and ankles while training the muscles to fire as quickly as possible can be a huge benefit. Also find as many Gene Mills videos as you can, being strong on top with a good tilt series is a huge benefit.

Good luck, where will you be going next year?

  4. I like this idea...

Me too. The only problem I see might be with dislocated joints or legitimate pulled or strained muscles, but this should cut down on the sleazy rest breaks. It would be nice to see this in high school, but too many liabilities and lawsuit happy parents to see it a likely reality.

  5. Maybe broaden it as either applying wrestling in a PE setting or an "Ethics in Coaching" that might not be specific to one sport. It would be tough to pass this off as something that affects test scores, since that's all the state cares about now. Worth a shot though.

  6. Does anyone know if Beech Grove has signed off on his eligibility? Three boys who wrestled for three different high schools, wow!

It will be interesting to see if people start attacking PM like they did Yorktown and Mishawaka in the past. With the new rules Daniels/Bennet have pushed through this will just keep happening more and more. Say goodbye to loyalty and hello to recruiting starting at the Jr./Sr. High school rather than college.

  7. I've heard that Vega's first move as Head Coach of Portage HS was to hire Hobart's 2x State Champ Eric Galka.. Nice staff shaping up at Portage..

Wow, that's going to be a fantastic staff, hopefully the wrestlers appreciate it and work hard to learn from them.

  8. This may have been answered already but what do you do with teams not affliated with a conference?  I would suggest an all in 2 or 3 class team tournament.

That's a good point, how many teams aren't in a conference? What happens if a conference has 3 or 4 top teams (I doubt that exists now, but may at some point)?
