  1. I'm sure that there has been lots of changes over the last 13 years but I attended an NAIA school. I had a gpa below 2.0 after my first semester and was eligible.

    Eligibility:

Incoming freshman: meet 2 of 3 - 18 ACT, 2.0 GPA, top 50% of high school graduating class

2nd term freshman: 9 hours earned during previous term

    2nd season: 24 semester hours

3rd season: 48 semester hours with cumulative 2.0 GPA

4th season: 72 semester hours with cumulative 2.0 GPA

  2. The NAIA does not mandate drug testing. That is a school by school basis.

As far as the countable aid...you must understand that it is more than just your athletic scholarship that is included in countable aid. The NAIA allows a maximum of 8 scholarships on your "varsity" roster. ANY aid that the school provides to you (including academic, athletic, we have "Phoenix" scholarships, etc.) counts in this 8 maximum. We must be careful on how much we offer kids because we have to take into account any other aid that is given by the school that isn't athletic based. Of course I have the money to give kids close to full-rides, but I can't do that because I would be exceeding the limits set forth by the NAIA.

Therefore if I have a kid that I am giving $10,000 athletic to and he is on $8000 academic then all $18000 counts towards my maximum I can issue out at the varsity level. If he has above a 3.3 as a returner then only $9000 of that counts towards my 8 total scholarships.

  3. NAIA is wierd the range of talents is much broader in my opinion...the top 8 are usually able to compete with just about anyone. The NAIA eligibilty rules are much more relaxed compared to the NCAA when it comes to academics so a lot of  eliete wrestlers who have issues academically tend to wrestle (and do very well) at that level. For the record I'm not implying that NAIA competiors are dumb. Some just dont do as well academically as others and choose NAIA to continue thier wrestling and academic career. I know Notre Dame College had a bunch of kids who were lights out but  just didnt have the grades to get in to OSU.

Fabio, I am not sure I would say the NAIA eligibility is more relaxed by any means. As a matter of fact, it is likely just the opposite. Two examples stick out in my head:

    1) The NCAA bases their eligibility on a sliding scale. The NAIA does not. You must meet 2 of 3 requirements: 2.0 GPA, 18 ACT (or 860 SAT on math and verbal only), and/or top 50% of your class.

    2) The NCAA takes your TOP score from the SAT. If you take the test 5x, the NCAA takes your top math, verbal, and reading score from each individual test. Therefore if you took the SAT in August and scored a math-600, reading 750 and then you took it again in Sept. and scored math-700, reading 700 then your NCAA SAT would be a 1450. If you were becoming NAIA eligible then your SAT score would only be a 1400. The NAIA takes the complete score from each individual test. I had a kid this year that had a 920 on his SAT via the NCAA, but his NAIA SAT was only an 860. That made him barely eligible. An 860 is equivalent to an 18 ACT, where as the 920 is equivalent to a 19 ACT.

  4. Dave will be replacing Gabriel Gonzaga and is set to face Roy "Big Country" Nelson on May 26 in Las Vegas. This is Dave's 3rd UFC fight. It will be great to get an opportunity to see another Indiana native, Darren Elkins, on the card as well!

  5. Hey everyone! I have finally landed a full-time job after finishing up my master's at UCM. We are doing some great things down here at Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. We have an amazing wrestling-only facility (http://www.gocumberlandathletics.com/facilities/wrestling/) and there are already additions that are working on being added to that facility. I have been in contact with some Indiana coaches already and am looking forward to hearing from more. We are NAIA and have awesome academic and athletic scholarships available. If anyone would like some info, feel free to call me or email me!

  6. Viterisi placed 3rd at the Newman Jet Invite yesterday in Wichita, KS. He lost to Basks from Labette (for the second time this season). Basks is undefeated on the year. Viterisi smoked Newman's returning tournament champion and NCAA national qualifier Mitch Arnold 12-3. He also placed ahead of Central Oklahoma's Casey Rowell who is ranked 6th in the country in the latest NCAA DII national rankings.

  7. I think some kids have just figured out, that you wrestle well when you feel well. So many kids I've watched durning the year to the point that making weight was tougher than their matches. Example remenber Kevin Clem PM, I think wrestled 135lbs for I believe 2 yrs soph & junior, and I know making weight was always tough. So his senior year he goes his basic walk around weight 152lbs or 160lbs, and gets to the State Finals only to loose in overtime to Kinser, and that's just one off the top of my head. I think if Tyler Willis had it to do over last year he would have stayed at 171lbs instead of cutting to 160lbs, I know physically he just looked better on and off the mat at 171lbs.

I don't believe the Kinser - Klem match went to OT.

  8. Fort Wayne native Dave "PeeWee" Herman is slotted for the main card on a star studded card for the UFC event in Houston on Oct. 8th. He will be fighting Mike Russow who is a relatively accomplished wrestler as well and is riding a 10 fight win streak. Tune in to watch both Dave and Darren Elkins on this card!

  9. Jason Tsirtsis wins in 2 periods to become a Junior National Freestyle Champion.

Jason Tsirtsis (Indiana) over Jake Short (Minnesota) Dec 1-0,1-0

The ball grab decided the first period.

Short is a very well decorated wrestler from a top wrestling family from Minn.

    The ball grab?

  10. I was referring to FWCS system, however the Lutheran schools are not exactly putting out a lot of wrestlers couldn't field half a team.  It is also my understanding that Buuck wrestled for Carroll Middle school before going to Dwenger.  Same for Papernick (spelling?) of Snider.  As far as the snider teams of almost a decade ago, I think they had the Blackhawk middle school program to rely on.  I am not rooting against SAC schools it's where I came from, but only three kids made it to state this past year.

I didn't really say that Lutheran schools were going to "save Fort Wayne wrestling" nor did I say that the Lutheran schools were putting out a lot of wrestlers. Someone on here stated that there is no middle school wrestling in Fort Wayne. I was merely just telling them that they were incorrect!

  11. Be real with yourself besides Carrol this year, Fort Wayne hasn't had even a descent team since the 90's Snider teams.  Its been ten years thats more then a cycle.   Thats the current state of wrestling in Fort Wayne, learn to live with it because it isn't getting a whole lot better.

So the 2002 and 2003 Snider teams were no good? I am pretty sure they made it to state one of those years with Wagner, Brownlee, Buffalino, Lineberry, Woodson...Fort Wayne was well represented in the early 2000s with several individuals as well that were making a name for themselves (Tun, Buuck, Early, etc.).

  12. The last middle school program was cut? I believe every Lutheran gradeschool/middle school (they are all grades Pre-8th) still has wrestling. So there are some middle schools still with wrestling. They are just Lutheran school feeders. Also, are we talking Fort Wayne or are we talking SAC? There are still NHC schools with middle school wrestling that are in Fort Wayne.

  13. Two former Indiana wrestlers on the card. Herman has been moved to the main card and will be live on pay-per-view. Elkins will battle to win his second bout in the UFC. June 11 in Canada!!!

  14. Leroy is in fact a lay coach. He has a very good job outside of the wrestling world and he will not be giving that up to teach. He is an EE major anyway. Leroy had several deciding factors in his decision. Portage is basically in his back yard. He was traveling 45 minutes each way to and from CCSJ twice a day. His wife gave birth to his first baby boy not too long ago and he already has two daughters at home too. Leroy will have lots of time to spend with his family now and they can even be around the Portage room. His job at CCSJ was just part-time.
