  1. We the fans and Parents of Elkhart Memorial Wrestlers are very sad to see him go. Coach spoke with all the wrestlers this week and informed them of this change. He was a large part of my two sons lives, coaching them for 12 years from grade school up. He has pushed my sons and trained them well. At Sectional this year my youngest son a Senior wrestled poorly in the second round and lost t a wrestler he had beaten twice earlier in the season. Then he let his emotions get the best of him and cost the team a point, Coach grabbed him, chewed his A$$, loud enough most people heard him tell him to sit down. But before the wrestle back round he grabbed my son held him and reminded him of what he can do, that he still believed in him and that he would still go to semi state. This is just one of the things that make him a great coach, he will be missed by the Charger wrestling family.

Lawrence North is gaining a great coach, I will be looking for great things from them in the future. LN wrestlers be ready to work your tails off.

I wish Coach a  the best of luck in the future and thanks for all you did for my sons.

  2. Could someone who knows the rules better than me explain why a point could not have beeen awarded for fleeing? Sure he did not flee the mat but he was fleeing the other wrestler and is that not what you are doing when you flee the mat? This is a serious question and am qurious of how this rule could apply.

Good question, I would consider it fleeing. SO zebra's what is the answer?

  3. This official DID NOT miss awarding points. The one instance in which the wrestlers went out of bounds and the official raised his closed fist was not a stall call, rather the signal that the wrestlers were out of bounds. Most officials would use an open hand to signal this call, however, this particular official uses a closed fist which is often times mistaken for a stall call. That particular official also raises two closed fists to show neutral, which is ALSO OFTEN MISTAKEN that he is calling a double stall. This was also all explained at the scorer's table when there was some confusion about a stall call that was not followed by the awarding of a point. A lot of things that have the appearance of one thing to the crowd are often explained at the scorer's table. Unfortunately, the fans don't get to hear what happened.

If that is the case with the official then this should be addressed with him to make that change in his hand signals. I have been around wrestling for 30+years, as a wrestler, vol coach and parent, and have wrestled while in the military in europe. And as far as I know the signal for out of bounds and both wrestlers are nuetral is open hands, stalling is a closed fist. I may be wrong but I believe that is what the rule book shows along with closed fist for stalling.

  4. We did have riding time when I was in high school in the early 60s.  Riding time was terrible and I am glad we got rid of it!  In my opinion, riding time is the #1 problem college wrestling has (notwithstanding Title IX).  Riding time provides even less incentive to turn an opponent and be offense minded.  Riding time makes our sport boring.  We need more rules to force offense, not add rules that simply increase stalling.

I agree, this would encourage stalling from the top. I believe to often the bottom man gets hit for stalling becuase he is not or can not get his hips off the ground, when questioned the ref states the top man was working to turn. But I am here to tell you with the crab ride, legs you can do so many things from the top to make you look like you are doing something and not really be doing a damn thing.  All a riding point is going to do is encourage a good first take down then crab and leg ride till the end of the period. No attempt to turn becuase you might get out of position and lose some ride time.

  5. I have read both post on the subject of team state, and not sure what to think. But here are my thoughts if anyone cares.

1> I told my sons growing up that wrestling makes men out of boys, you will learn leadership, discipline, respect for yourself and others.

2> I can't imagine as a coach( which I am not) not wanting to do my best and push my team to do their best.

3> I watched my sons team push them selves last night only to lose to a very strong Penn team, the pride I saw in them being there and us parents on how well they did. Then watch a under ranked East Noble team step up and give it a go pushing Penn farther then they thought they would be.

4> I challenge anyone to tell those three teams East Noble, Penn and Memorial that team state does not count or mean anything. I can't comment on Culver becuase I did not see them to busy watching my team.

5> If wrestlers don't think it means anything or they don't have a chance it would be because their Leaders (coaches) told them that.

6> I am ashamed of the things that are being said on these topics about coaches, as a adult  we should know that tearing people down in public usually does nothing to fix the problem

7> IF these coaches did as suggested, throwing these meets, will have to look themselves in the face every time they look in the mirror and in the faces of the young men that they are in charge of. Let their  conscious be their judge.

I can't pick a team champion... I can't be over-confident but I also can't bet against my school. No matter who wins though, it will be a lot closer than a lot of people are expecting I have a feeling.

Well it looks like everyone else thinks this will be to close to make any guess. Oh well.

  7. Football has a play clock, basketball has a shot clock, wrestling has stalling.  People don't pay for a staring contest...  However, I don't believe there should ever be a hard-and-fast way for calling stalling.  If I have a six point lead, or even a three point lead, there is a reason.  You have to understand that at high levels of wrestling referees main job is to get a clear winner.  If a wrestler in the quarter finals gets a three point lead he should be able to 'defend' that lead.  He should not be allowed to flee, avoid offensive attacks, etc.  But, it is up to the losing wrestler to push the issue.  Sometimes you will see a match when the loser is laying on his belly and the wrestler with the lead is just laying on him.  As a referee, in this situation if both guys are happy with the score, so am I!  Stalling, if called uniformly is wrong, it takes a confident official who can follow the course of a match mentally to get stalling right.  When called right it is a beautiful thing.  On many occasions I have seen an official call stalling on a kid, the kid responds and scores offensive points.  A good official then turns to the coach and says, "half of those points should go to me."  A good official calls stalling when an athlete is preventing the progress of a match (0-0 score, zero offensive points).  If he is up by 4 in a tight match, the other guy better be helping sell that call by pushing the issue.

I agree with what you are saying, but it's too often that appears that a Ref is biased one way or another. By that I mean hit one guy for stalling, next period same thing happening but the wrestlers have switched position top/bottom and no stalling.

I have seen a few refs, some I even call friends who I liked to give a hard time to, who tell the wrestlers those tid bits of info that give you a idea what is happening. You can her them say thing like Red you need to move, watch that arm, green stay in the circle etc. They give these wrestlers the chance to correct the action or inaction, but at the same time aren't afraid to make the call, even if it ends the tie or the OT becuase of point awarded.

  8. On stall or no stall...or mat awarenesss--- Take your chances, don't quit wrestling or pay the consequences....remember just because you get away with for 3/4 of the season doesn't mean it won't come back to bite ya

On referee's calling it----Make the call and be fair to both wrestlers, be quick and decisive,

On top/bottom wrestling----Let's see some action, our sport would garner more fans if we sped the pace up and got quicker re-starts ( I hate when  wrestler's won't get off the hips)

On OT or BIG matches----Doesn't matter...hate to see the ref call one but if it's the right call, make it

Double Stalling----When neutral I could see this....

I personally believe that ref's have some responsibility to throw hints/pointers/quick phrases towards wrestlers so they understand that it may be coming, whatever the call, not just stalling ( I have seen this done from time to time, keep it up).....I played collegiate football and I appreciated a ref that would warn you on a possibility of holding, or illegal hands in the face, not being properly alined (too far off LOS as a OT)....these pointers made me appreciate them and want to do right and play within the rules (some which  I wasn't aware I was breaking).....I know many of us are hyprocrits in the sense of when calls don't go in favor of us or our wrestler, I wholeheartedly believe that the ref in many sports, can bring an aspect of wisdom, professionalism and tone to a match that will be more pleasant for all. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. That's life. I wish every young wrestler the best as the tournament series begins.

See ya at Conseco (or whatever it is called nowadays)  :P

    Well put.

  10. So you agree with stalling or you don't?

Mayor, I hate stalling. But as another soul said "match management" much like two min drill in football, or slowing down the game in basketball by using all the shot clock, or fouling to stop the clock and hope your opponent can't hit free throws.

But let me be as honest as possible here, I hate stalling when has adverse effect on my team and the ref does not or wrongly calls it against us. However if my team is using it to our advantage then it "works for me"

  11. why be satisfied with winning by stalling i say keep working for the pin or points for a tech the better wrestler should not have to stall

I have seen very good wrestlers in all levels of the state tournament who have continued to work for the pin, with 30 sec left and been caught in a crap move the other wrestler threw in desperation to try and win. I taught my sons to wrestle hard, aggressive and look for the ultimate win with a pin. But when it comes down to the last of the third period, you have a small lead and you have given all to get where you in the match, STALL YOUR BUTT OFF.  Both boys have been caught in the last ditch effort of their opponent to win.

After having said this, I hate stalling especially when one wrestler gets a small lead and then does nothing for the rest of the first two periods. If some one were to tell me that my son is stalling and the ref should call it, I won't disagree with them.

However to me the worst part about stalling is how it gets called these  days or does not. You can see a man ride with the crab or legs and move from side to side banging on the head, puling a arm  but never leaving the hips. Wrestlers know that it is almost impossible to turn some one with out getting to a side, yet it will be the bottom man who gets hit with the stalling, becuase if he opens up to much it could be bad for him.

In the confernece tourney this weekend I watch one wrestler take lots of shots through out the 3rd and the 1 min of OT, and the other wrestler backing out and riding the edge. The ref called both for stalling becuase there was no action. I personally think he knew the one wrestler was stalling but did not want to have to argue with his coach, so he made a "no call"

  12. Board has been fairly dead after conference so why not get sectionals back on track.  Here are my top 8 Fort Wayne Sectionals.

    1.  Jay County-  Jay county sectional currently is top heavy.  It has the number 1 team in the NHC(#3 2a Belmont), and #1 and #2 teams in the ACAC(#3 1a South Adams and #2 1aAdam Central).  These three teams lead the sectional, but all the other teams have several scattered individuals that will be on the podium to help add depth to the sectional.  Every weight class will be highly contested.

I would put the Elkhart Sectional over this sectional. Memorial beat Adams Central by 30 points at New Haven. With the power wrestlers at Jimtown 4 ranked in state, and other solid teams in the Sectional. I look for this sectional to advance 15+ to Regionals. I think they will do very well at Semi and see them advancing the most to state.

  13. I am thinking that Memorial will send 12 -14 wrestlers to regional. Both Jimtown and Memorial will have about the same amount of champs. The tournament will come down to how the rest of each team wrestles and place. I think it will be Memorial with a win by a very narrow margin. I will make my guess's at top four for each weight once brackets are posted.

  14. That makes 13 Memorial wrestlers with 1 more possible in the finals. Could be the Elkhart Memorial Varsity line up vs NLC in the finals> Either way I will the obvious statement now    The ELKHART MEMORIAL CHARGERS win 11th straight Conference champs.

  15. Alright the NLC tournament is coming up who are your winners?

            1st                                    2nd

    106 Gayfield  Concord     Vaughn Memorial

    113 Brooks Warsaw         Flickenger Memorial

120  Puckett  NR               Moody Neukum Mem

126 Open from what I can tell

    132 Blodgett Mem

    138 Bogle  Mem

    145 Roberts Mem                  Pickard GSH

    152 Ntende GSH

160 another one up for grabs would think Kendall Mem will do well

    170 Vance Mem                 Karsten NR

    182 Jenkins Mem            Telschow (NW

    195 Johnson Mem           Eldridge GSH

    220 Spears Mem

    HWT Daniels GSH

Brackets posted, now I will make some changes to my predictions

    106 Vaughn  Gayfeild

    113 Brooks  Flickenger

    120 Moody Nukuem then Puckett

126 Maynard  toss up between Gomez  Mem or  Baxter NRG

    132 Blodget  Abair PLY

    138 Bogel    Kenny NRG

    145 Roberts  Williams CNC

    152 Ntende  Vaughn Mem

    160 Kendall Mem  Trenshaw GSN

    170 Vance  Kasten

    182 Jenkins Mem            Telschow (NW

    195  Johnson Mem          Eldridge GSH

    220 Spears    Connell NRG

    HWT  Daniels  Henderson Mem

  16. What does 170 look like?

I believe 170 will be between Vance Memorial who has beat everyone at 170 in conference and Karsten from Northridge. I will give the edge to Vance do to the fact he pinned all opponents except Karsten, however he has beat him twice this year already both by major
