Amateur Wrestling News released their new high school team rankings today and Perry has fallen to 23rd in the nation. Intermat has dropped them to 27th. With five all americans at Fargo, back to back Disney Duals national titles and a continued presence at the top of Indiana wrestling I assumed this team was poised to approach a top ten ranking. Both rankings have Perry behind Cincinnati Moeller, a team they defeated two years ago at Disney. I had a back and forth email discussion last year with Josh Lowe of Intermat, who does their rankings on this very topic. He is extremely knowledgeable about high school wrestling on the national level but when you boil it all down he doesn't have much for Indiana wrestling because we don't wrestle out of state due to the IHSAA restrictions. Now Perry is the home team for me so I will admit I am biased, but I feel Perry is being slighted in the national polls. I wonder what peoples' thoughts were on Perry's national ranking and as part of a broader discussion does Indiana wrestling deserve more respect on the national level in general?

After all this discussion I hope that the kid who started this thread and the others that responded saying they would like to be on a Disney team find one. I also hope that there is a paid high school coach that is willing to coach them all the way up until 11:59 pm on July the 1st. Then I hope that coach takes the last 59 seconds to say to that kid that he won't be able to coach the kid the next day because that is the rule and rules are made to be followed period. I hope that coach says I coached you up until this point because I want you to get everything you possibly can out of the best sport on the face of the earth. If you want to put as much time and effort as you possibly can into wrestling I will be right here with you doing everything I can to help you achieve your goals. After Fargo I want you to take 3 weeks off and go fishing, spend time with your family or do whatever makes you happy. I think that is how the spirit of the rule should be intrepreted. This intrepretation is probably why some programs like Perry, Penn, Mishawaka and Mater Dei have been so successful and others have not.

These are the totals that I came up with between 1st and 2nd from '03.
Mater Dei 161
Griffith 84
Wow that is an impressive margin of victory. Anyone know what the team scores were for the Mishawaka team? Not sure if it was 2009 or 2010.

Below are the would be team scores from this past weekend as reported in another thread. If these are accurate it shows just how dominant of a preformance this was for Perry. A 46 point margin over second is impressive. Have there been any other individual state team scores that have compared to this?
Perry Meridian 119
Cathedral 73
Crown Point 66
Hanover Central 61
Yorktown 53
Evansville Mater Dei 47
Merrillville 46
Lake Central 40
Bellmont 32
Lawrence North 31
South Adams 31

Perry was definitely the class of the field today. I know Mater Dei did awfully good in 2003 and Mishawaka in 2010, but this Perry team has to be in the discussion for the best showing at the individual tournament ever. What say you?

Perry looked really good. Had 8 out of the 9 in the finals and came away with 5 Champs, 3 runners up and a third.

I have wrestled a lot with McKinley and I have to give him the nod over Molloy. Last year Molloy was one of the most impressive wrestlers in the whole state tournament and I think they are both skilled enough to win consecutive titles but I just think Jared will be too strong for Neal. Jared just has a quality about him where I don't think he will lose in crunch time. We all saw him dominate last year, not because he was that much better than everyone else but because he wasn't going to hold anything back. The winner will be the guy who is most mentally prepared for this match at state. Good luck to both guys and I can't wait to watch this one.
Jordin Humphrey
I would have to agree with this statement. I have been around the Perry program a little bit over the last three years. Jared Mckinley has a very quiet confidence about him. He's not cocky, not arrogant just as mentally tough as they come. I remember him coming out as a fresman against Castle and needing a pin or tech fall to win it for Perry in the team state, and the look on his face said it all. He looked as though it was another day at the office. Same look last year in the Regionals before he wrestled Kieffer. I liken this look to the same one Tom Brady had when he came out for the Patriots first posession against the Colts when we played them in the playoffs at New England. The Colts had just punted and the camera zoomed in on Brady's face and I knew the Colts were going to lose.

There are not many teams that can compete with the Falcons this year and on a good day the Rebels could win this dual, but knowing Coaches Tonte & Schoettle they will have the Falcons focused and at their best for this dual, prediction 46-14. I hope I am wrong and it's closer than this, but this is how scarey good I think the Falcons are this year. Good luck to both teams...
These are my two favorite teams as I am a former Rebel turned Falcon, but I would have to agree I think the Falcons are truly scarey good.

Perry Meridian's Matt Schoettle. The proof is in the results.

Roncalli has NEVER beaten Cathedral in a dual. Don't be the first team to let up on them, Irish.
Roncalli beat Cathedral for the City Title in 1988 and beat them later in the year in a dual. Lance Rhodes ushered his team into the locker room without shaking Roncalli's hand.

This is not true. Josh Lowe of Intermat actually said he used the results from Disney to do a line up analysis for Perry and how they would match up with other teams. He stated that the reason he still had Moeller above Perry last year was because at Disney Moeller was without their stud Joey Ward and another kid. He summarized that with those two kids in the lineup it would have been enough for Moeller to win and he was aware that Brandon James was not in the line up for Perry. When I explained to him that Ward would have been against Jared Mckinely which at the time Intermat had them ranked 6th and 7th in the nation. I explained to him that that match up was a coin toss at best and I felt outside any other information you would have to go with the head to head results to base your rankings on. That's when he responded with the argument that it was difficult to rank Perry because of the lack of out of state wrestling. I don't disagree that makes it more challenging to rank Indiana teams and others on here agree also. I just felt then after 5 all americans at Fargo (and although almost doesn't count, Jacob Cottey lost in the round to become an AA when he got pinned in the second period after teching his opponent 7-0 in the first. That win would've made Cottey a 2X AA) and another Disney Dual Title, Perry would move up significantly in the rankings. Last year at the end of the season Amateur Wrestling News had Perry 12th in the nation. I believe Intermat had them around the top 15. I felt as though a top ten ranking might be attainable for Perry. Now to have them fall out of the top 20 I began to get the feeling that not only was Perry underrated but Indiana wrestling as a whole was underrated. Maybe Indiana is good enough to have more than one team in the top 50 in the nation.
