  1. Y2 if any of my guys make it to the finals I will makethem smile when they walk out for introductions why not you are in the state championship you dont have to look like a harda** everyone knows you are tough you are in the finals so be happy about it  ;D

Hell!  I'll Be smiling if my  son just gets on the floor. Under the lights? WOW !!  Hope it happens. :) It is GO time. Only 12 hours until it all begins. Good Luck Boys!! Wrestle fair and square and may the best man win! I think Vince Lombardi said something like that.

  2. Besides Brooks i dont know too many more studs at 113 this year i think he will just walk though it all..

This wt class has a large number of freshmen. It seems it has replaced 106 as the freshman wt class.  I would like to see Brooks test his metal at 119 or higher but genetics is what it is. IMO this is not a weak wt class. Just lacks a lot of experienced kids. Do not insult kids. They are all working their tails off. Ok Stud.

  3. LaHue 4 Davis 2 in the Semi-Final. He was never in trouble but Davis wasn't either. It was a nice takedown that beat Davis. LaHue 6 Shoettle 3 in finals. Shoettle was overmatched in every way.  LaHue has a pretty clear path to the Semi-Finals and I would expect him to perform well.

Didn't schottle beat davis  8-4 with 4 take downs. Lahue is very quick off the whistle with a single leg shot and pretty good on top. I don't think schottle was over matched in  every way. Lahues second  takedown was questionable call as time ran out off schottle headlock. Lahue was a couple of seconds off schottles timing from getting pinned. Final score should have been 4-3 Lahue. I do not remember for sure but I think Schottle scored one late takedown then cut Lahue because he was down 5-3. If not for the, What I believe was a bad call, in the first period this match would have gone in to OT. Also schottle scored 1 point for Lahue stalling. Lahue wrestled very smart and benifitted from an officials questionable call. So the cookie crumbles :P. Schottle wrestled fairly well and he can wrestle better. Good luck to both boys @ State !!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I certainly agree with most everything that has been brought up on this thread regarding Team State.  The reality is that the IHSAA has already made up their mind.  I base this comment on conversations I have had with administrators who have recently attended IHSAA regional meetings across Indiana.  The IHSAA has handed out a spread sheet which documents the decline in revenue (and interest) in our Team State format.  The last e-mail that I saw from the IHSAA several days ago said, "2010-11 will be the last year for the Team State.  The new format will go into affect 2011-12."

There are several variables that must be considered on this topic, and I don't think we will ever get all parties involved to agree on one solution.  I truly believe that if the Team State Duals series were "classed"; we would see an explosion of excitement, increased revenue and increased interest in our duals series.  As mentioned in another post, the current Team State series is really a race between about 6 schools year in and year out.  All you need to do is look at the results since the inception of this event to support this statement.  Again, as mentioned earlier, someone said, "the same set of schools vie for the 5A football title every year."  The difference is that there are 4 other classes where there is tremendous excitement and many, many schools get a shot at winning the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A football titles each year. The classed football system works as it offers hope and equitable opportunity for schools of all sizes across our state.

There are a number of other variables that will impact our sport in the near future.  Things such as increased budget cuts, more lay coaches, the cutting of middle school wrestling programs are just a few that come to mind.  I am not going to say that any one person is wrong for the way they feel about our post season structure.  I see some value in everyone's comments.  I, personally, have seen this topic from many angles too.  I was part of Delta's 1985 team state title when we won it with 3 placers (a 1st, 3rd and 4th).  I have been a varsity coach for 22 years with 18 of those as a lay coach.  I, and my coaching staff, work 365 days a year to keep our dreams alive of winning a team title some day.  Wrestling in the Team State finals was a great experience this past season, but with 700 students in our school, I can tell you right up front that achieving this feat on a regular basis will be difficult as we just don't have the numbers to "reload" every year like bigger schools.

In the end the tournament is "owned" by the IHSAA.  They don't seem to care what those in the trenches have to say on the matter.  I wish our state AD association would step up and take more of a stand on issues of this nature, but it seems to me that the IHSAA has a "checks and balances" system that, let's just say, favors the IHSAA's decisions at the end of every meeting.

I have had some great conversations of late with coaches about other "controllables" in our sport.  I would also like to point out that Cale Hoover has done a nice job of walking the tight rope with regard to the IHSAA during his tenure as president of the IHSWCA.  He is not to blame for the direction in which our post season tournament is headed.  The IHSWCA officers have made presentations and suggestions to the IHSAA, but again, in the end the IHSAA has the final say so.  As the next president of our coaches' association, I plan to focus on the "controllables" in an attempt to strengthen wrestling in Indiana as a whole.

  5. Having an open club in the spring doesn't mean its open recruiting.  I have ran an open club for the past five years and never has anyone magically moved to Garrett.  I know for a fact that the kids I work with in the offseason would have loved to wrestle for me during the high school season.  I would have loved to have a couple of the club kids I coach on our team this year and know three top 5 ranked wrestlers that would have made us an instant team state contender.

    Joe,

Give yourself 1000 wahoos for this affirmation. I wish all coaches followed your code of ethics. Unfortunetly, they do not. You have just outline one of the ways these "winning" coaches get it done. There are a few others I dare not mention for fear of being stoned to death. I am serius about the Wahoos. :)

  6. I think we should save this post and after a certain weekend in February see how many of the 28 wrestlers mentioned in this post actually are standing atop of the podium Saturday night.  Two pretty impressive Tournaments.

        Very Impresive  indeed !!

If they all place at state this would be 25% of Saturday comp. WOW!! It could be higher . This will be interesting to follow at Conseco.

  7. Actually, 37 different teams have been to the team state.  Some big, big schools have only been there once where some small schools have been there many times.  just looking over the stats.

37 out of 311 is about 12% so he is close to right on that. 12 out of 311 is about 4%. This is were he is off.  You would have to look at averages to be more accurate.  I would venture to say that on average  "less than 10% " get a chance to participate. This is why team state has lost its drawing power. Without parity sports just gets boring. Just ask the NFL and NBA. Team state is great if you are one of the Less than 10% .Coach Snyder said it best. It is not fair in its present form and needs to be classed. You need to convince the other 94 % that we need to keep it until we can get it classed. As the IHSAA goes that could take a long time. The majority could rule here. Wrestling does not get a lot of respect in most schools. In other words it is not one of the glamorous sports that people just love to watch. You 8 teams better start working your fans. You better hope one of them is Mater Dei. Which, by the way, is not a 5A team and would not be in your Class. Kinda makes for a messy situation. Just not as easy as it seems. Who wants to host a 16 team dual invitational. That is what it seems we have. The other 95 + %  can come if they want. Those would be true wrestling fans. And yes I would be there. Because I love Wrestling!!!
  8. amen!!!! sponge bob just seems to be a bit jealous to me as well. As one who wasn't around before team state, did the dual meets still feel as important without the team state to look forward to a rematch? Were there a lot more individual tourny? just asking

You sound a little nervous to me. Should you be?? Jealeous of what? Winning through cheating and bending the rules?? Is that what I am suppose to be jealous of?? We are really off topic. Which is to do away with team state or not. Sounds like somebody is worried they are going to lose their play thing. Boo Hoo  :'(  What will we do??? ???
  9. I would venture to say it's through hard work that they put in running camps, clubs, and practices throughout the year. I would say possibly out working you and your coaching staff. I WOULDN'T say every coach is unethical or cheating to win. Listen the recruiting button needs to stop being pushed. If coaches were getting the job done in their room then the wrestlers from that school wouldn't need to go other places to maximize their potential. I'm not saying that recruiting is okay but I am saying it is not always the coach who is pulling the kid in.

These coaches you speak of that are trying to save team state are trying to help the GROWTH of  wrestling. They could be seen as the spokesmen of our sport and they are known because of there success. I would say coach Snyder and Coach Tonte have there kids best interest at heart not their own.

I think for you to come on this board and bash them by saying they only coach wrestling for their ego makes you sound a bit jealous and bitter of their success. Frankly, it makes me think maybe you should be working harder in the off-season to put your program together like Tonte did or like Snyder did when he took an already solid program and took the next step to prominence.

      Sorry coach

I just see the next level as helping kids beyond 4 years of high school. Did you happen to know the true story behind the current movie "Blindside" Now that is real success, not stocking shelves at a Dilly Mart. Seems we have a different view of success too. My story is about none of what or who you mentioned. It is about a system that "always"  puts the kids first . I just do not think team state does that.

  10.

Alright so having a team championship creates an ego issue? SO according to your post getting rid of team state and putting in solely on the wrestlers would correct this ego issue we have? Sounds a little backward to me. As an individual you get that it's all about me mentality and you only worry about yourself. With a team atmosphere you may still have SOME of this. However, I believe much of it depends on the attitude of the coach and how he brings his team along. If the head coach builds a team first approach within the team there will be less room for an ego to grow.  I just thought it was an interesting approach you took stating that by taking away a TEAM portion of state and making it all about the INDIVIDUAL, you would help wrestlers with their ego issues.

You still run into the individual egos here. Coaches still measure their success in part by how many kids they can get to state and how many they can get on a podium. Remember the team state as it currently stands only affects 20 teams at best. The ethical issue needs to be dealt with by the schools AD and administration. Getting rid of team state WILL NOT help this issue. To think otherwise is just silly.

Sorry Coach, but how do you think one school wins 11 State Titles in a row . This curent format is not inclusive of all schools and promotes cheating among some programs . That is why no one really cares to attend. I firmly believe in the value of ethics if doing away with the team state moves  us towards this then I am for it . My team has no chance to get there because my coaches and school chose not to bend the rules. If you do not see what I see then you need to take a closer look. Things die when they do not have a healthy root system and that is what is happening. The individuals you speak of are the kids who bust thier tails .         yes we should be encouraging them to nurture a healthy ego.     It is the coaches who need to look in the mirror. Why is it  and how is that the same teams and coaches get there every year. It is the same coaches who are trying to save team state in its current form. It is about them not the sport.I vote give it back to the kids. I for one do not like what team state has become. A place to see who can cheat the best team together.  do not ask me to be specific. It is the ugly TRUTH

  11. How is team state about egotism.  Doesn't the team aspect of wrestling teach all of the things you listed and more?  It also deals with every kid on the team not just the studs.  Are the good kids the only ones we care to work for?

I am reading a little between the lines. I am referring to Ethics when it comes to bragging rights for schools and coaches. This idea of chasing a state championship as a team leads to some unethical behavior that has nothing to do with what is best for the kids. I would like to go back to the old way and see what happens. The idea of creating a circus to fill the seats seems a little silly to me.

  12. Is it about Dollars or is it about what the sport should be.Teaching good values like integrity, hard work, sportsmanship and ethics. Team State is mostly about egotism. Get rid of team state along with the egos. Let the kids have the sport back. It can all be decided at Conseco. If you raise the cost of admission by$1 per session you could make more added dollars  than you make at team state. It is an economic no brainer. I recall one of the commentators on this board once tell me no one cares about anything but first place anyway. One Champion One Day. Makes sense to me.

  13. In the past seven days, numerous events have taken place and decisions have been made that really placed our sport and some of its leadership in a bad light.  The focus has been taken off of the 99% of wrestlers, coaches, and administrators who are doing things the right way and making decisions based on what is best for the student athletes and the integrity of the sport of wrestling.

    Let's Recap:

    1.  Sectional Saturday - a returning state runner-up was allegedly allowed to wrestle without having the proper amount of qualifying weigh-ins.  His coach was allegedly disciplined with a slap on the wrist but the integrity of the weight management policy was further compromised by lack of enforcement.

    2.  Sectional Saturday - a prominent program's coaching staff was accused by meet officials of finding results of another sectional and than injury defaulting their wrestler after leading a match 8-0 presumably to ensure a more favorable draw at the regional tournament.

    3. Regional Saturday - a wrestler is allowed to compete after not making weight.  A call to the IHSAA and an accusation of scale tampering is enough for the IHSAA to allow the kid to wrestle despite what appears to overwhelming evidence to show that no such tampering took place.

    4. Regional Saturday ? The Big Kahuna ? The IHSAA decides to deny the opportunity for wrestlers to compete at the Jay County Regional.  They rationalize the decision by calling these wrestlers a ?small minority?.  A few coaches at the regional express their discomfort with the situation but wrestling ensues.

The first three examples seem to show a lack of coaching integrity and the last shows a monumental lack of leadership by meet and/or IHSAA officials.

Coaches need to get their own house in order before any changes will come at the state level.

Thank You Karl and Chad for being the voice of sanity in a sea of insanity. When asked about cheating Vince Lombardi said this not to worry" Evil carries within itself its own seed of self destruction." I believe he was right. This is a truely sad state of affairs I hope somene does what is right.
