  1. I just want to point out I wasted a good chunk of my prep reading this whole thread.  I'm pretty sure I giggled at least once on every page.

Just to cast my vote:  rule is a rule.  Coach your kids, explain the rules, don't be surprised if when you don't you get called out.

Now, continue so I can get back to giggling.  8)

Finally, something about this makes sense...

  2. I absolutely love how OUR state tournament is ran. The Friday night matches are sometimes just as good as the state championship matches it really comes down to who wants it more makes everyone wrestle a whole lot harder. and the people who are just satisfied of making it to state are the ones who usually lose. I could care less for wrestle backs to be honest just will make the tournament last another 4 more hours

I think this guy knows something about wrestling.  We should listen to him.

  3. You realize you're asking for the IHSAA to make this a 3-day event, thus making making them have to reserve Bankers Life for another day, pay an extra day for officals, and kids have to miss an extra day of school. Bobby Cox will not allow that, especially if they are not willing to waive a single weigh in so that we as a state can run our own dual tournament free of any cost of the IHSAA.

I agre we have to make the best of what we got but be realistic...

Don't drag the officials into this.  For 1.5 days they get app. 100 bucks, a cold meat sandwich on Saturday, lots of applause from the fans, mileage (which you will waste driving to an affordable hotel OR if you go for a hotel downtown b/c the IHSAA doesn't reimburse officials for their rooms).

The IHSAA isn't losing a dime on officials, ever.

  4. Let's get back to reality...

What does this have to do with putting points on the board?

How much longer before you ask a referee varify that the parents of each athlete shake hands after the bout?

Coach, say something nice about the losing wrestler. ???

Coaches, coach the kids responsibly and let the officials call the bout.

  5. As has been stated by the originator of this thread, a question was asked and input was sought.  All of the criticism toward those who say "rules are rules" leads me to believe that the criticizers don't really want an opposing view point.  Additionally, by the logic of many on here, you can only suggest someone follow a rule if you always follow it yourself.  I don't know about the rest of you, but living that way would make it tremendously difficult for me to be an effective teacher, coach, or father.

The thread is titled, Letter of the Law vs. Spirit of the Rule.  I am saying the spirit of the rule is not intended to eliminate thirsty athletes who are 10+ lbs below weight.

I raise my children very conservatively and I do follow my own rules.  That part I agree with you.  Do I teach my children to only cross the mall parking lot at the crosswalk, no.

I have also been known to park at wrestling tournaments in places that technically are not parking spaces...

  6. I am sure all of you stay in your seat and behind the tape line when you are coaching.

You probably never coach your kid during injury timeouts.

I bet not one of you have ever called a ref to the table and not gotten a coach's misconduct call.

You always stop a kid from walking across an unused mat with his straps down.

    ::)

  7. I want cool points back.  This comment gets one from me.

    Exactly...

Ask yourself, what does this have to do with putting points on the board?

Here is an idea, officials score the matches, coaches teach ethics.

If you feel that strongly about it give everybody in the room a sip at the scale and everyone is happy and hydrated.

  8. Two rival schools wrestling.  One school with an unusually low graduation rate was clearly winning the meet started the chant, "Maybe next year..."  The other, more academically gifted school, who was losing chanted back across the gym, "We'll be in college..."

At a football game between two similar schools in the Ft. Wayne area the school with lesser academics scored a touchdown to make the game a blowout.  The losing student section started chanting, "We passed ISTEP..."  I laughed so hard I almost wet my pants.

  9. I loved the Lehigh singlets when they got popular in the region.  it was the same year when all the undefeated people started wearing things like saran wrap and ultra revealing  pink fuzzed handcuff thongs to weigh ins in the post season.

Singlets!  Singlets, man!  I was at that weigh-in working that scale  :'(  I had almost forgotten that day...  Have mercy!

  10. Why does everyone care about our perception in other states?  We can change that by getting more kids to not just wrestle in national tournaments, but do well in those tourneys.  She has earned her spot like everyone else.  I doubt everyone thought the 126lb weight class was down last year in college wrestling because a guy with one leg won it all. Everyone saw an athlete that worked their tail off, regardless of the circumstances.

Keep up the hard work, Kayla and continue to represent Culver (this yr) and hopefully the US well in the future!

    Finally, some common sense...

Cosgrove, I wasn't there, but you opinions certainly have credibility.

  11. ahhh, Shapiro's...  good place

I can't believe no one mentioned The Slippery Noodle.  I don't even know if they serve food, but what a tradition!  Great jazz.  Ran into Tsirtsis there last year and the wife says to him, "Are you really wrestling royalty (someone there told her that)?"  He looks right back at her and says, "NO, but there are only 6 others like me on the planet  ;D"
