  1. You do know this is a wrestling board not a basketball or football board right?  I haven't heard of too much bribing going on in collegiate wrestling.  It's too bad our instate schools can't recruit our home town boys better.  Look at Michigan State University aka Team Indiana.  They came to Purdue for a meet last month and it was sad to see so many great wrestlers in Green.  Ya got Ian Hinton, Josh Harper, Sean McMurray and even Alex Dolly coaching.

You know I find this topic very interesting. There is so much that goes into picking a school and on the other side a school picking an athlete. Just because a school is in in state does not make it a good fit. One of the things that I was interested in is the academic support that was available to the athletes (tudors, study hall & counselors), then you have to consider distance (cost of commuting too & from), out of pocket costs, course of study offered and the list goes on. Then you have the fact that aschool only has 9.9 scholarships to split up between an entire team of wrestlers. So a school must go after certain needs. For instance, if a school knows that they will need a certain weight class in a couple of years, they start recruiting now. They have to prioritize, because they only have so much to spend. IU & Purdue did not really pursue Sean much, for whatever reason. They were probably happy with their situation at that weight. I'm sure wherever Jason ends up going, he will find the right fit. But making a decision based solely on wrestling is a mistake.
  2. Yes, Sean was #2 @ 157 for the Spartans. But due to the season ending injury to Cheza, it was decided to start him. He went 4-2 at the Midlands to reinforce that. He will take his lumps but will hopefully learn his strengths & weaknesses and be able to work on them next year. He should redshirt next year with both Anthony Jones & David Cheza (157 & 165) coming back from redshirts for their Senior year.

  3. Josh is starting at 133 for the Spartans. I believe he is 6-6 and seems to be having fun and getting better every match. Most of his matches have been close, with the exception of Iowa. As far as Sean, it is fairly close between him & Cheza. However, Cheza is a 4th year Junior. When Cheza decided to 157, Sean made the decision to try 149.  It took 3 weeks to get there, he made it. It was an experiment that didn't work. Sean had nothing left in the tank. So it was decided to not do it again. Osterman has since moved up to 149. But it all good, Sean has been entered unattached at the Midlands in the 157 bracket.

  4.

Major concern ?    The 160 opponent from Illinois is 16-9 ...  surely Sean's coaches are slightly over 160 (and a little tougher than a 16-9 HS kid) and Sean wrestles them in practice ?

Not talking about "Braggin' Rights". I was speeking of the actual IN/IL All-star meet. I believe it is in Hinsdale, IL this year. Slosser & the IL kid should be a good match.

  5. I hope you decide to wrestle as well .Don't you want to go kick some IL butt ? And by the way , congrats on your 3rd ,you are among Indiana's elite.

I've heard a rumor that they do not weigh in for this IN/IL meet. That is a major concern, Sean does not cut weight. He is under 160 now.

  6. There is also a book called "The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Wrestling by Robert G. Price". You can get it through Amazon for about $10 to $15. I bought it for Sean a few years back. He didn't use it much, but it stress flexibility and core strength. Pretty good stuff!

A couple of other noteworthy books are "The Effects and Risks of Extreme Weight Loss on the Body of a Wrestler: A Report of a Senior Study by Joseph C. Gunter" & "The Arsenal: The Wrestler's Training Log by Alan Fried and Nicholas Rizzo".

See you guys thought i was just a stupid hillbilly with a pretty face. I can actually read!

  7. But Vega ended up being an all-american--so there goes that theory.

I also have often wondered how many wrestlers not only inhibit their muscle capacity by cutting too much weight, but how many literally stifle their bodies from reaching maximum adult height/weight?  If I had the time and resources, I would love to do a nationwide study of high school wrestlers to see the percentage "stature" (height/weight)  increase for wrestlers from ages 15 to 18 versus average non-wrestlers of the same age.  The nutrient deprivation has to have an effect on some over time.

Very true. It most certainly can be done. But the odds of a small guy getting a good D1 scholarship are few. Leroy was actually not Minnesota's 1st choice. Once he got to Minnesota, he started an heavy lifting regimen along with eating right in large quantity. I think the biggest issue would be just getting college coaches to see potential in a small wrestler. That would be where success at national events would be important!

  8. Since college you need to be a 125 lb. to compete when do you think it is critical for a wrestler like Phillips , Brooks , and Petrov to bump up for college , or does it matter ?

I actually asked this question during Sean's recruiting. The majority of the responses were that unless a kid is truly special (i.e. National Champ) & had a physique that they felt could support more weight, they usually didn't really recruit lower than 119. Also on this note Leroy Vega once told me that most schools thought he was too small, and he won several Fargo Titles.

  9. I have talked to Sean and he said that at the point that he raised his hand and put 3 fingers up, Willis had stopped wrestling and was just laying there. I have watched the film and it is confirmed that Willis had stopped wrestling and had conceded the match. It was over. I know for a fact that Sean meant no disrespect. He said that he spoke with Tyler after the match and he is a nice kid and a very good wrestler.

  10. Some of this is accurate, but you need to rethink that McCray is definitely better than anyone McMurray has wrestled.  He wrestled the #1 kid from IL this season.  He has also wrestled Willis, whom he beat 1-0.

Let me get this straight. You guys are saying McCray is better than McMurray, Quiroz, Vhalos, Terrel, Stahl, Willis & Illinois Malik Taylor! Damn! He is good! Let's give him the medal now!

  11. From a Team dual stand point, naturally a pin is better (more points). But I seen and heard wrestlers try to explain away a pin. I got caught, etc. But there is no explaining away a Tech. It is total domination. You can't accidentally give up 15 points or more. So from an Individual standpoint, I think the Tech Fall is more more gratifying or humiliating, depending  on which end of the score you are on.

  12. I don't think there will be alot of surprises. I think CP will wrestle fairly straight up. Remember you can only move up 1 weight class from your IHSAA Tournament weight and cannot move down. So that eliminates a Tsirtsis-Shurg swap ala P-CP dual or even a Surma-McMurray match.

  13. Are all of you guys serious.  I wasn't there but if all there was is a little pushing and words. I sure hope none of you let your children watch football. Because it happens all the time. Everyone let's there emotions get the best of them sometimes its part of being competitive I think.  Cut these kids some slack.  Good luck to both in the future

    AMEN!
