  1. All-State is something I have only seen in team sports as well.  In football, All-State is a process that the coaches work on.  There is an IFCA All-State team chosen in each class (jump on it Y2!) at the IFCA meetings.  For the AP, nominations are sent in by the coach and they select a team.  However, if you are nominated, you get an honorable mention selection.

I would think if you are a state qualifier, that is equivalent to All-State.  "1st Team" to me would be like your champions at each weight class.  But that is just an opinion, not a factual statement.

I think you are talking about two different animals that don't necessarily translate to the other.

  3. So no returning champion or runner-up in the same weight. Interesting, did the IHSWCA have anything to do with this?

I thought more about sectional realignment being the reason this got dropped.  You have some schools trading sectionals or regionals that may pair returning champs at the same weight in the same class.

  4. I was very impressed with the overall presentation that Coach Creighton gave on Friday.  This was my first clinic with the IHSWCA after several attended in other sports.  I really enjoyed the way he focused on things that were practical in nature and could be applied to any team at any level.  Obviously not everyone will adopt 100% of his approach, but I felt that everyone there could take something they heard back to their team and make them better because of it, which is the goal of any clinic.  I would encourage those who did not attend to check him out.

  5. This seems to be the key issue that so many are having.  When someone simply asks, "Is there a better way?" they are met with hypersensitivity and scornful responses.  Nothing can be accomplished by any organization with that attitude.

I see your point to a degree.  However, it seems that some posters or media members on this particular site seem to consistently ask "Is there a better way?" in less than productive ways.  I do appreciate the fact that Region Royalty actually provided a suggestion or alternative instead of the usual "this isn't good"  or "You're too late" or "Why are we wasting our time?".

I am interested in hearing what Coach Creighton has to offer.  Some of the best information I have ever received in a clinic came from a small school assistant coach who was just a tremendously devoted student of his sport.  It doesn't have to be the #1 wrestler in the nation to be worthwhile to listen to.  You did provide a wish list that the association can look at going into next year's clinic.

I am intrigued with your suggestion of the academies.  Since they are a business, they may hesitate to offer their information to a wide audience like that.  Might be bad for business.  Maybe not.

  6. I am looking to purchase used FlexiRoll Dollamur mats for our program.  We are interested in any color as long as they are competition marked and in decent shape.  If you know of someone looking to get rid of one or a program looking to upgrade what they have, please give them my information.  All offers will be considered.

PM me or email me at hannona@paoli.k12.in.us for quick response.  Our athletic department is very motivated to find one.

  7. Just to be clear: the multipliers were based off a full season of data of all results of all teams from last year--not limited data this year.  Also, Jasper is very close to these other teams--they just don't have anyone at state so they can't move up.  They're not still way back at 180.  As we said, we'll publish all teams' final scores after the state finals.

That makes more sense to me.  So then this year's data will go to next season and so on and so forth.  Thank you for clearing that up.  Keep up the good work!

Again, I'm not saying anyone is wrong or any team doesn't need to be involved because my team is better.  I'm just a guy trying to understand the process.

  8. Just curious as to if you find the concept of a multiplier unfair, or if you find the numbers attached to the multiplier to be too much?

I personally think the values are too far apart.  But I am not in charge of the program, so all I can do is share my opinion.  I don't expect maligned to scrap the whole process, but I think he would welcome discussion about how to make it better.

I just know at this point, they used results from this site to compile a rating that determined the multiplier.  I just pointed out that there may be an issue with incomplete data, since not all the results get posted.  It may not make a difference with the bigger schools but in 1A I think that is a valid issue.  If your results are not posted, there is less of a chance they will get caught by another school since 1A schools tend to have dual matches against schools of their similar size (for the most part - I know there are exceptions).

Again, no dog in the fight like Rick does.  I do not think my team has a valid argument to be rated any higher than we are.  I just think the system may limit certain teams from being considered.  Our sectional does not have a 3A team in it, so I would assume we would be one of the lowest rated ones.  I just don't think it's that big a discrepancy.

  9. I think he is more concerned with the multipliers involved.  To some, you are geographically eliminated by the sectional you attend.  If I score 100 underclass points in the Southridge Sectional, it is worth 70.  If a team scores 55 underclass points in the Evansville Central Sectional, it is worth 71.5.  I understand completely that you are trying to reward teams who compete in tougher sectionals, but it may need a little tweaking as you go from year to year.  Also, I'll bring up again the point about using Genius ratings to make these multipliers.  One team involved only has 7 matches in the results section that you rely on to produce these ratings.  Is this enough to produce a quality image of a team's strength?  Just thoughts though.  I have no dog in this fight for this season for sure.

  10. Welcome to the Internet people....it's a place where you can hide behind a supposed anonymity and get away with everything however identities aren't as secured as you would like to think if you are going to post something post something under the assumption everyone knows who you are and you won't end up eating your words...I hid my name till I graduated and since then have displayed it on every post it def has gotten me some negative responses due to my beliefs but at least I was out there...I took many negative responses from penn fans but I've been told they at least respect me for being upfront about it...now in defense of Y2 I dunno how many of you guys understand how this Internet thing works it takes money and time and it was started by Y2 if he decides tomorrow to make it a basketball board and ban all wrestling fans he can. When you sign up for the board you basically waive rights to freedom of speech if you don't agree with that don't sign up.

Exactly.  Whether or not you think it was weak sauce to do is irrelevant.  As a media member, Y2 can take whatever angle he wants on the current state of Indiana wrestling.  That's why this site came into existence.  He saw a need in our sport for people to spread information and opinion on the sport of wrestling, and he created this site in response to that need.  There was no promise that it would be fair and balanced, as most members of the media may feel stronger about some topics as others.  When you understand those facts, it's not so bad.

  11. Note to self

NEVER SAY SOMETHING BAD about someone AND never have a personal vendetta against Y2 :-X

I wouldn't go that far.  It just seems like you need to sign your name if you want to be negative about someone else.  I can respect that request.

Also, this is Y2's site.  Freedom of speech is a subjective issue as determined by him.  If he wants you to own up to your comments, it's his show.  If you want complete freedom, there is a lot of Internet out there for you to produce your own site.

  12. Walter,

It appears you mistook the intent here.  I don't think I would disagree with you that common sense needs to apply.  I merely asked a question for people to answer if they choose.  If you don't think there is any problem with how things are, why raise your blood pressure?

  13. A question for those opinionated souls out there who are genuinely interested in improving Indiana wrestling:

What ethical issues do you see that are unique to our sport that may need addressing from time to time?

I'll give an example from a different sport.  In football, a sport-specific issue is the off-season/summer camps and how they should be run.

All ideas are welcome.  This is for information purposes only, not a witch hunt.

  14. No I am not a member this year after being a member for probably 6 or 7 years.  I proposed a few simple ideas when I was a regional rep, but they were shot down.  Ideas like this will take more than one person to gain steam.

You deal with them the same way, whether they are members or not.  The IHSWCA represents ALL coaches whether they are members or not.

I am judging by the response to Wednesday's events that more than just one person sees the need for a tangible response to ethical questions.  I think the steam is gathered.  It just so happens that it is vented by folks popping off on here instead.

I like your second statement.  Takes the union/non-union feel out of the situation.

  15. If you are going to call people out, it would be respectful to put your REAL name, not a fake one.

You have hour to apologize to Coach Peckinpaugh with your real name or I am releasing it.

Are you going to release all the names and usernames or just the ones you have a personal vendetta with?

  16. First off I would consult with the football coaches association and see what their policies and procedures are for ethical violations and proceed to model the IHSWCA's off of those.

I am an IFCA member.  I have a copy of the ethics code.  It is a good model to base one off of if the IHSWCA does not have one in place.

Are you a member of the IHSWCA?  If so, since it was your idea and you said you would, would you like to draft a code and present it to the IHSWCA?  If not, I don't mind to work on that.

Again, notice that in a small conversation, we actually could have a plan in place for change.

  17. Restructuring the IHSWCA and they being on the forefront of addressing ethical and other issues that try to skirt the IHSAA rules.  When a coach teeters on an ethical issue someone within the IHSWCA addresses their concerns to them and reminds them that while it may help their team in the short term, that in the long term it is not good for our sport.

OK I'll bite.  Suppose for a moment that you are heading the ethics committee for the IHSWCA.  How would you address a coach who makes in your estimation an ethical mistake by sending a JV lineup to team regional?  What power or control does the IHSWCA have currently to correct/punish/admonish/penalize this coach?

I agree with you that there needs to be more ethical behavior among coaches as a whole, but how can this group that you yourself classify as fairly helpless do anything to a coach that would be of any substance?  If the IHSAA would grant this group the ability to recommend action that the IHSAA would follow through on, then I think it's worth beating this drum.  But if we are acting as an association only, what teeth do we have to make these penalties stick?

Right now, the association could deny a coach the ability to have his team participate in the Classed Duals, deny the offending team Academic All-State nominations, or release a statement condemning the actions of the offending coach.  In the first two cases, the kids lose.  Not a big fan of punishing kids for adult mistakes.  The third amounts to a "No, No, You don't do that!" which means little.

What if the offending coach is not a member of the association?  Would they be subject to the same penalties?

In theory, this sounds like a good idea.  But it will take a lot more ideas to make something like this work.

  18. Gonna be honest.  I don't see how you can go from the decision of a coach to fill in names in a lineup to the entire state of Indiana wrestling is led currently by men with no character.

I get you want action.  You've made that clear.  But I honestly don't want this kind of leadership (tearing down the decisions of others and insulting coaches) in the coaches' association.

You got a problem with that coach's decision?  He's got an email address.  Share it with him.  But don't insult a large group of coaches who are out here working to make things better for our kids.  That's low class....
