  3. I stopped in this past Sunday to watch some elementary wrestling in the Yorktown gymnasium.  To my surprise there were 6 Delta wrestling grads who were coaching a team and/or their sons at the event.  It was nice to visit with them and see that they are still involved in the sport.  As I watched each of them interact with their son and their team, it brought back fond memories of our days at Delta High School wrestling under Coach Don Patton.  The 6 guys I saw in that gym last Sunday produced a heck of a lot of wins in their day and brought many championships back to Delaware County.  I hope I didn't forget anyone else who might have been there.  It was nice to see the next generation of wrestlers cutting their teeth on the mat!

  5. In following up with thecomets post regarding the actual IHSAA by-law addressing competition levels, I discussed this issue face to face with Commissioner Faulkens last spring.  He said to me, "actually, a school could send two varsity football teams out on the same night.  Varsity football team "A" could be playing at home and they could send a Varsity "b" away to another school for an away game.  Coaches/schools typically don't do this in football due to numbers of players, coaching responsibilities and traditional habits.  It just says that a school can only enter one team into the post season tournament."

From a rules perspective, the IHSAA seems to be concerned about two things (one wrestling related and one not).

    1. From a wrestling stand point, they want to make sure individual wrestlers stay under their 18 competition points.  Mr. Faulkens (the IHSAA) did not seem to have a problem at all with the "2 varsity squad" situation as long as each wrestler stays under their points.

    2.  Where they are having problems is with "over booking" of varsity competitions resulting in cancellations in other sports.  An example would be baseball which occurs in the spring during bad weather.  Coaches would over book their schedules knowing that a few games would get cancelled due to inclement weather.  Then all of a sudden, the perfect spring occurs with no weather cancellations.  School "A" would have to contact School "B" at the last second and cancel, because they were going to be over their allotted number of competition points.  School "B" had senior night planned that night, and now everything is a shambles and parents from school "B" are calling the IHSAA complaining about school "A"'s scheduling policies.

  6. Certainly a good discussion piece.  I think each person who has posted has made some valid observations regarding this situation.  I remember when I wrestled at Delta in the early/mid 80's.  When I was a freshman, I wrestled on the Delta freshman team.  When we wrestled most other schools, we would wrestle that school's 9th grade team.  Back then, our wrestling competition model looked much like football or basketball still looks today.

When I was a sophomore, I was on Delta's JV team and we would compete against other schools' FULL JV squads.  It is getting harder and harder to find quality JV competition opportunities for kids.  I hate that for our sport, but that is the reality these days.

This can be a sensitive matter as a variety of people place different levels of emphasis on Varsity vs Junior Varsity.  Personally, I think people get too hung up on these two terms.  I like it that coaches who have 70 kids on their team send a Varsity "b" squad out to compete at varsity events.  In the absence of full 9th grade and JV events, coaches are forced to "think outside of the box" in getting their kids matches.  The final determination falls on the coach as to what level of competition he thinks his Varsity "b" kids are ready to take on.

Wrestle next at home:  Saturday, Dec. 15 (10 team dual event)

  10. My guess is that there will be a good attendance at the Dec. 22 event, BUT many people are focused on their competition for this week-end (and rightfully so).  The bracket draws (and their posting) will no doubt create some interest and dialogue surrounding the Team State Duals event.

The brackets have been developed and will be released this week-end.

I have been personally contacted this week by several newspaper reporters who are inquiring about event details and plan to be at the event to cover it.

The IHSWCA will be putting out a special edition of UNITE early next week with its content focused on the event and the teams competing in it.

This is a unique time of the year with holiday tournaments approaching and semester 1 finals week hanging over wrestlers' heads.  People have a lot on their minds with the holidays coming.  I believe the wrestling community will start to follow the event more next week when more information is released and this week-end's competitions are complete.

    Respectfully Submitted,

    Trent McCormick

    IHSWCA President

  17. I would like to thank Mr. Creason (South Bend Tribune) for his recent press release surrounding our event.  Additionaly, Mr. Creason forwarded his article through the Associated Press to newspapers all over the state of Indiana.  It has already been run in several newspapers.  If your local newspaper has not run it yet, you might want to contact them and ask if they will indeed run it at some point to recognize your team who is participating in the event or to simply promote the event in your area.

Although it is true that the coaches and teams participating in this event are highly competitive in nature, the IHSWCA really hopes this will be a special event for Indiana wrestling in general.  It will be a celebration of wrestling for teams from 24 communities as well as an opportunity for teams/schools of all sizes to showcase their skills and have their moment under the spotlight on Dec. 22.

Any, and all, correspondence that I have had with the coaches who are participating in this event has been extremely positive in nature.  One coach has already reached out to all of his school's wrestling alumni to ask them to come to the event and support their team; another school has already ordered special gear for their team just for this event; and there are other specific examples of how coaches are in essence making this event one of the main focal points of their season.  It is gratifying to me, and the IHSWCA Board of Directors, to see people excited about wrestling in the framework of dual meet competition.  This is one of the beautiful aspects of our sport...  at times it can be purely an individual sport; while at other times, teammates depend on each other to score points for their squad!

When the tournament is over, it is the IHSWCA's hope that both the wrestling teams and Indiana wrestling fans enjoyed themselves and felt like they got their monies' worth.

There are a few people that I would like to already start thanking for the time they are investing into this event:

    1. JD Minch - tournament director - has already put numerous hours and days into this event.

    2. Terry O'Neill and the Westfield HS athletic office who have been working feverishly on the logistics of the event.

    3.  Mark Durham - who has taken the bull by the horns with regard to trackwrestling and the 4 live camera feeds that will take place at the event and the sponsorships to cover this cost

    4.  Tom Clark - who has lined up 20 of Indiana's best high school mat officials to work this event

    5.  The ISWA - which has pledged their full support with equipment and manpower for the event

    6.  The Indianamat staff - who will be producing "classed" team ranking in coordination with the IHSWCA staff for Indiana wrestling fans to view.

There are other people carrying out smaller pieces to the puzzle, but these are some of the people who have put a lot of work in upfront in preparation for the event.

    Thank you,

    Coach McCormick
