After observing the IHSWCA teams over the past few years, and speaking with other Indiana coaches at the event this year, I plan to bring up the topic of how we select our IHSWCA teams at the spring clinic for discussion. In no way, shape or form am I saying that anyone has done anything wrong in formulating our IHSWCA teams over the years. Envelopes are passed out to the 2 highest placing underclassmen wrestlers in each weight class at the state meet. If wrestlers decline their position, the next highest placing wrestler is contacted about filling the spot. It has always been carried out in a very uniform and fair manner.
The issue seems to be that wrestlers cannot (or are choosing not to) make the weight (+5 lbs) that they competed at during the IHSAA post season for the NWCA Scholastic Duals. I still think that our teams have competed very well at this event, but what if we gave our team leader(s) more flexibility in filling our teams? If a kid was a state champion at 113 and would commit to our NWCA team at 120 so he could make the weight, wouldn't we still want him on the team? Or not? I realize this "pick and choose" type of a system might open things up for favoritism, or political selections, but it might also take the handcuffs off of our team leader(s) so they can put the best possible teams together for this event. One coach brought up a good point that the NWCA Scholastic Duals fall right around the spring break time for many athletes. Most would agree that kids don't want to have to watch their weight while they are on spring break.
This is not a topic that is burning deeply with me. I just thought it might warrant some further dialogue and discussion to see how others feel about the issue. Someone out there might also have some other good ideas in how we could improve our process. One could also make the point, "if it ain't broke; don't fix it!" Maybe the way we are selecting the teams is indeed the best manner to get the job done.
None-the-less, it is a great event, and all five of our teams competed valiantly at this year's tournament.

I would like to thank John Cook, and his staff, for pulling off a wonderful tournament this past week-end at the NWCA/USA Wrestling Scholastic Duals. Coach Anderson, and the Wabash wrestlers, did a very nice job of setting up the facility and running the scoretables throughout the event. Indiana's mat officials did a great job of providing top notch officiating at this very competitive event. As usual, Chris Lynch kept those in attendance fed and watered with food that was "cooked on the spot."
All of the teams that were present got to participate in 7 very competitive dual meets. I love the format of this event as it places teams of equal caliber in four pools (Gold, Silver, Bronze and Copper) after the intitial pool wrestling is completed. It makes for very competitive wrestling no matter what pool your team may fall in.
Thank you again for a great event from top to bottom.

For the dual meet state tournament series, they would give you roughly 20 medals and you could distribute them as you saw fit.
-
$5 per medal for us to purchase them. They aren't all that expensive... I guess it's just the principle of the matter that bothers me.
It's not like they are recognizing 3 or 4 classes of first and second place teams. It's 2 teams in a single class sport for goodness sake!
Can you imagine if they told the basketball teams that they were going to have to purchase their own medals???
I wonder how many team medals they give to each of the 10 football teams in 5 classes???
-
I must say I am a little disappointed with how the IHSAA has handled this. When our wrestlers accepted our State Runner-Up trophy, they were given 5 medals. When I approached Bobby Cox and asked why we only received 5 medals, he said those 5 medals were for the coaching staff and that we would have to purchase any additional medals we would want for our wrestlers. I didn't press the issue at that point. Seeming it fair and reasonable that our wrestlers should receive state runner up medals, our AD contacted the IHSAA this week to inquire about this. I don't want to misrepresent their conversation, but basically, he was told that since we are an individual sport, they (the IHSAA) did not provide team medals to our wrestlers. They again said that we would have to purchase any additional medals that we would want for our wrestlers.
I am still a bit frustrated with this response. I, personally, don't think it would have broken the IHSAA's bank to provide the two top teams with 14 team medals each for their 14 sectional entrants (their teams).

The IHSWCA's 16 regional representatives were to pass out a packet of documents at their sectional seed meeting AND identify a coach at their "sister" sectional to pass out that same packet of documents at that sectional seed meeting.
The packet included:
1. IHSWCA membership form
2. Instructions on how to submit academic all-state information for juniors and seniors
3. Milestones in Coaching document
4. Regional Coach of the Year ballot for voting

I like that concept (of multiple teams). Maybe we need to get back to smaller squads with multiple squads. Possibly only have 14-16 weight classes (so all schools can fill a full varsity team). Then larger schools could simply have multiple squads (varsity, B team, C team, etc).
-
I do agree that a standard set of middle school weights would be helpful. I'm not sure if anyone noticed this year, but we (Yorktown) used the same weights for the Middle School State Duals that they use for the Individual Middle School State Championships at New Castle. We did this to try to bring a little uniformity between these two events.
The only problem I see is with having too many weights for some regions of the state. Some would say "more is better", but it becomes very difficult for a medium to small size school to fill out 22+ weight classes at a team event.
I guess it depends on what the objectives are for your region of the state or the actual event you are putting on. What about offering 2 sets of recommended weight classes? One set could be used by smaller schools or by events that simply want fewer weight classes. The second set would include 20+ weight classes and could be used by larger schools or state events where added participation is necessary.
Although it would take some work, it might be worth collecting some data from various size schools to see 1) what weight classes they currently use
2) how many forfeits they typically have 3) what is the distribution of weight classes?
Very good topic!

Under the current format, there will probably be some deserving team(s) left out of this event due to the IHSAA's decision not to grant us an extra weigh-in. It would be great to be able to select the appropriat teams 2 weeks before the actual event, but that just wasn't in the cards for our first run with this event.
There will no doubt always be people on both sides of the fence with regard to this event, just as there are critics of the BCS football process... or how teams are selected for the NCAA basketball tournament. I want to thank those coaches who were possibly on the bubble for making this event who have remained professional (and some even supportive) regarding our first attempt at this event.
I do agree with most everything that Y2 put in his analysis of the event at the top of this thread. I, too, see areas where we can improve for next year's event, but I want to thank all of those people (mostly volunteers) who put many, many ours into planning and running the first event. Many of these people were coaches who have their own team to worry about back home, yet they took extra time out of their day (year) to work on this project for many other teams and fans to take part in, and hopefully enjoy.
I would like to point out that Assistant Commissioner Faulkens was in attendance for rounds 1 and 2 Saturday. In my brief conversation with him, he was very impressed and thanked the IHSWCA for hosting the event.
We will certainly evaluate all areas of the 2012 event, and make adjustments (where possible) in preparation for next season's event. Please e-mail me with any recommendations you might have for improving this event. Again, please remember that we have to operate under the rules of the IHSAA, so any adjustments or new implementations must meet these guidelines.
Thoughts/areas to consider:
1. Selection process for next season's event
2. Facility
- size, location, cost and facility staff are important
- Coach O'Neill and his staff were incredible to work with this year (you don't always get that at a big arena)
3. Format
- can/should the tournament invite more teams or stay like it is
- facility and scheduling play a big part in this decision
Thank you,
Coach McCormick

A committee of head wrestling coaches from around the state met with the IHSAA several times last spring and discussed/evaluated different components of our sport in Indiana. One of the items that was brought up is this very issue that CoachW33 has brough up. What about the kid that is body fat tested at the beginning of the season, but a couple of months later his body has naturally come down in weight but he is now violating his weight control plan.
The committee recommended (and Mr. Faulkens agreed to it) that a wrestler in this situation be eligible to be "retested" by I believe the end of December (no later than this).
You might give the IHSAA a call to double check, but it may be as simple as putting him back on the body fat analyzers and re-entering his data into the IHSAA's data base thereby re-calculating his weight class. Certainly, this provision was not recommended so every wrestler in the state could recertify at the end of December, but more for football players whose body chemistry looks very, very different on Dec. 20 than it did on Nov. 4 after 6-7 weeks of wrestling practice.
IHSWCA - Transition of Officers - Status of Organization
in Past Discussions
Posted
I want to thank all of those people who have worked so diligently on behalf of the IHSWCA during my past four years as an officer. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Cale Hoover (IHSWCA president 2009-2011) who implemented some strong policies and practices which strengthened our association.
I would also like to thank JD Minch for his endearing loyalty to the association. Without his devotion and efforts over the past two decades, we may well not even have an association today.
The other board members have done an outstanding job of working within their committees in implementing our various programs and services.
I would like to thank Danny Struck for all of his dedication to Indiana wrestling. It has been a pleasure working with him during the past two years. You will be hard pressed to attend any tournament, clinic or state meeting without seeing Coach Struck in attendance. He works tirelessly, not only for Jeffersonville Wrestling, but for Indiana wrestling as a whole. Coach Struck will do a fine job as the next president of our association. He will officially take over as president next Friday at the spring clinic.
I would like to note some of the new programs, personnel and policies that our Board of Directors have put in place over the past couple of years. It has not been easy, but the journey has been worthwhile and gratifying. Again, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for all that they have done in pulling off the following items.
1. Made our association's framework official with renaming to "IHSWCA Board of Directors" with official
committee structure and committee chairmen.
2. Implementation of an Executive Director's position for the association (thank you JD)
3. UNITE e-magazine (thank you Coach Riesen)
4. Pulled off inaugural (and hopefully many more) IHSWCA Classed Team State Duals event
5. Addition of more monthly meetings for improved business productivity for the association.
6. Addition of "Coaches' Mentoring" committee on the board. (thank you Coach Livingston)
7. Healthy checking account with roughly $15,000 in the bank
I would also like to thank Scott Schwarz for doing an amazing job with our Hall of Fame and HoF banquet. This is not an easy undertaking, and he handles it so professionally.
A big thank you also goes out to the Louis Rosbottom, and the ISWA, for partnering with the IHSWCA on various projects. Sharon, Trina and the ISWA board of directors are a phenomenal group of people.
Areas that I was unable to conquer, and I feel still need addressed:
A. I was unable to secure any sort of a Hall of Fame museum for Indiana wrestling. There have been some
neat ideas in this area such as a "virtual" Hall of Fame online; a Hall of Fame booth at a large
sporting venue such as Bankers Life; or coupling a wrestling hall of fame with an already existing
hall of fame such as the basketball hall of fame in New Castle. This is still an area that I would like
to see come to fruition someday for Indiana wrestling.
B. Despite valiant attempts by our regional representatives, we have still struggled to boost membership.
I am hoping that the addition of an Executive Director will add some stability to our ranks and
possibly aide in growing our membership.
C. I would have liked to have worked on getting wrestling reinstated in some of our Indiana colleges and
universities. This is a large task that would require a fair amount of work to be done in a top notch
and professional manner in order to have any hope of being successful. This would be a neat area
to tackle.
Best Wishes,
Trent McCormick
IHSWCA President (2011-13)
