South Dearborn wins team title going 4-0
SD 78 Lawrenceburg 6
SD 51 Batesville 21
SD 45 Union County 34
SD 53 Milan 27
SD also had 9 weight class champions.
(Phillips 112 [uC] and Duckworth 189 [uC] were both 4-0 and looked impressive, however due to splitting two and two in weight classes both were not eligible for weight class titles. Each moved around looking for the best match from each team.)
SD's weight class champions:
112 Chance Evans 3-1 (Lost to UC)
119 Jacob McCord 3-1 (Lost to Phillips)
130 Tyler Clark 4-0
135 Justin Ballard 4-0
152 Nick Manning 4-0
160 Nick Harrell 4-0
171 Jacob Felser 4-0
189 Kevin Wilger 3-1 (Lost to Duckworth at 215)
215 Ron Forman 3-0 @ 215 (4-0 overall on day)

Jarred Pressley of East Central at 145 will not be back this year. I believe he is moving back to Ohio.

I commented to this on the college forum. I found what seemingly is reliable information on the Illinoismatmen site but could find no formal article about this.
I wish Coach Mena nothing but the best for him and his family. He is certainly a class individual.
-
Illiniosmatmen had a thread on this with a bit more information saying that he was wanting to do something else and also enjoy his family.
I have always been impressed with Coach Mena. He has come to our school for the past five years I believe and put on excellent one- and two-day camps for our kids. Our school is not a short drive from Bloomington. In fact, he just put on a camp on April 1 at our school. He had his same enthusiasm as I have always seen from him. He is an excellent role model who spoke very well to our kids about many things beyond just wrestling. I know that we have appreciated his efforts over these past few years. I certainly wish him and his family the best in whatever direction they decide to head.

The only coverage that Sports Illustrated decided to give the NCAA's was a photo in the Leading Off section at the front of the magazine. Unfortunately, the photo was of Metcalf shoving Caldwell. Instead of showing something of a positive nature, the magazine decided that this was the most appropriate way to give our sport coverage. I really enjoy reading SI every week, but I wish that they would only stick to the sports that they know well instead of feeding into the stereotypes that so many casual sports fans believe about the sport of wrestling.

I'm Popeye the sailor man.
I'm Popeye the sailor man.
I'm strong to the finish,
Cause I eats me spinach,
I'm Popeye the sailor man.
Sorry, but I couldn't resist the temptation to bring this back to the top of the board. Absolutely one of my favorite cartoons growing up.

First and middle initial along with last name. I felt no need to hide behind a screen name. I actually like some of the originality that is present in a lot of the names on the board (oh, how I loved the who are you thread), and I certainly do not want to suggest that all or even most are hiding behind a name. Many identities are known despite the name chosen, but we all know that some do like to hide and post things that are not in the best of taste. However, most are fair.

I removed my first post to this because I am not thinking. Must be the time change. Anyway, the fourth point would only come if the opponent were in need of injury time. This is the case to award three near fall as well if only the criteria has been reached for two points. The other examples I gave would actually account for four points, but only three would come from near fall and the other would be a penalty point.

You cannot take your stuff with you to the floor if you have a duffel bag. The small backpacks are allowed, but many wrestlers had to strew their bags throughout the halls and in the locker rooms while they went out to wrestle and/or warmup. It is unfortunate, but there is not solid security to ensure that something is not taken. The security personnel do not know if a particular bag belongs to the person going through it.

Here is the link. It is a well done piece.

I believe the New Castle singlet you are referring to has several small white trojan heads on it. It is a bit too busy for me, especially when watching it from the corner of the mat. As you seem to infer, it is difficult to make out from a distance, which probably means it does not have the proper effect it was intended from the stands.
-
I would tend to agree with the stance that you would hope the kids would show a bit more respect for their high school. I know the people who own and run ProPower, and I am certain they would not condone this nor did they have any part. Honestly, I did not notice this, but I was only watching the choppy feed on ihsaasports.org, so I may have overlooked it moreso than if I would have been at Conseco tonight. When I wrestled, I always wore my lucky t-shirt which had nothing to do with my school, but I would have never thought to line up for a faceoff or go to the awards podium without my team warmup on. It was only worn under my warmup. First and foremost, I represented my school.

I know he's a freshman, but how old is this kid?Does he have 3 years of eligibility left?
IWF,
I see that you edited your previous post, and I did not see the original, but I think your final comment is best left unstated. It is not appropriate for someone to personally state something of which you have no proof, especially when that person is a youngster. Cody always seemed respectful in the many matches I saw him wrestle this year. He conducted himself on the mat and off at the meets in a fine manner. I know that you did congratulate him in your post, but I think you should publicly apologize in your post to Mr. Phillips. If you meant the comment in reference to his physical appearance as a bit of a joke, it does not come off that way. Show some couth.
-
I would certainly not want the wrestler to direct something toward his opponent, and I have never seen it at the state finals. However, I feel that he can take a few seconds to let out his joy in some manner. It should not be excessive, but it is certainly exciting to see the joy that is expressed after accomplishing such a lofty goal. I would not percieve any of tonight's celebrations as excessive. Unbridled joy is not a slap at your opponent, but rather a natural human reaction to a moment of greatness and achievement. I think that doing it after having your hand raised would be almost anticlimactic. Also, I would certainly not condone this for a wrestler during a team tournament as it may cost his team a point, but for the individual tournament, I think it is great.
-
Well put Warrendad. You get a wahoo for that.
-
Union County is the smallest county in the state of Indiana and barely makes 2A status. And I think if you ask either Michael or Cody (or any of the guys on the team) they would never dream of wrestling for a class state championship.
Sorry, but Ohio County holds that distinction. It is the smallest in area and population and the school (Rising Sun) is only a 1A school in all sports it participates that are unfortunately classed.
-
Coach Briggs has had quality wrestlers for several years. The program at Union County is a good program. My congratulations to Cody Phillips and Mike Duckworth on their state titles. Well done.
The small school TEC conference may end up with three individual titles if Chalfant of Winchester wins at heavy.
-
I would agree and say that NC may get four.
New Castle SS is at least guaranteed two. At this point it could be anyone in the others.
-
From the rankings page it appears as if Tsirtsis wrestled Wright in that meet. It shows that Tsirtsis beat Wright 6-4.
-
Another typo by the IHSAA has Michael JORDAN-Jones of Warren Central going for 7th at 189.
-
I was wondering if the backpacks were allowed onto the floor at Conseco. I believe that we were not allowed to take a gym bag out to the floor. Are backpacks able to get by the security onto the floor? If so, this would also be a good reason to have one instead of a gym bag.
-
I feel that New Castle offers a very good site for the semi-state. The wrestlers and coaches are able to move about down on the floor as needed to get around, yet the fans always seem respectful in not doing this. I think the bowl type atmosphere is better for watching wrestling than a tiered gym where some sight lines are more likely to be obstructed as well.
Also, moving the site to Ball State would just make it even further for some teams to travel. I know that some Indy area schools already have to travel all the way to Evansville which is quite a trip as well, especially with no interstate. However, moving the NC semi-state even further north makes it seem like there are three sites in the north and one in the south. I know that some people feel that all the best wrestling takes place north of Indy, but have a little sympathy on those from the southern half of the state .
-
I agree, but it is going to take A LOT of wrangling with the IHSAA to get it done. They have been so resistant in the past.
