Also Vafaeipour teched the Mongolian 86 guy we see at Asians and worlds 10-0 to win gold. Huge tournament for him!

I reckon Kaveh will want Vafaeipour to go to Paris if Hassan doesn't heal up in time. Not saying it will happen. But they are close.

Yes Shamil Mamedov, 65 truly chaotic!

Shame about Geraei. One thing I would say is he wrestles very aggressively like this final, he could have sat out his opponents parterre and give up one but he when for a big action and got himself countered.

Has to be a serious discussion about 67 with Ismaili now.

Him and Geraei should have a wrestle off. Fairest way. 2 out of 3.

Do you know if Mirzazadeh's injury is serious?  I would still like to see Mirzazadeh and Hedayati wrestle off.  I expect Hedayati to get better every day, but also expect Mirzazadeh to win

We spoke today. He's going to go to Iran and get some scans. Will find out more. Hopefully nothing serious

so at this point, the only question marks for the olympics are 57 kg, and 74 kg.

It's probably gonna be Javan at 57kg. I don't think the powers that be have much hope for the weight class, you never know though.

74kg.....it's between Emami and AM Yazdani....I think Emami ultimately will be the pick, unless AM Yazdani gets sent at 74 Internationally and gets some decent wins over big names. Emami late 2022 early 2023 was so much better than the current version we see.

    125kg Zare is a stud.

97kg Azarpira just massively upped his stock with that win. He should have cemented his place really with that win. You never know cause Kamran has a bigger stock in Iran than Azarpira. But Kamran just is not big enough. And Azarpira got the win today..so Azarpira has to be the rep imo.

It’s an Olympic year, unless Azarpira does something spectacular in a couple of hours I’d be happy for our 2 time world champion at 92 to go up and have a go. Still think he has an excellent chance of picking up a bronze which realistically is what we can say for Azarpira too.

Let's see how Azarpira does against Snyder.

But I'm inclined to agree with you.

Masoumi beats Dishvili 8-4 and progresses to the SF. The scoreline is kind to Dishvili, Masoumi controlled the match but he has a very relaxed style and prefers to sit on a lead rather than hammer the lead home and close the show

Azarpira defeats another American (Trumble) 8-7. Wow. That was terrible. He looks very vulnerable in scrambles and showed horrible conditioning again! Totally gassed at the end. I have to change my mind about Azarpira now, I don't think he can be our guy... How does he go from teching Tsakulov to this ?!

Ghasempour defeats Turkey 6-1 in a solid performance and will wrestle Snyder in the SF

If Kamran beats Snyder I reckon he gets the Olympic spot. To be honest I reckon they give it to him anyway. Fair play to Kamran he's doing really well considering he is not a natural 97kg wrestler.

Don’t consider Valencia losing an upset tbh. Remember last year when we were all hyped for him against Hassan then he barely scrapped through a match against some Chinese guy then got teched by Ishiguro. 86 doesn’t seem to be the weight for him.

Biggest disappointment was Emami, at a time when you’d hope he’d be stepping up a gear that was a big setback. Wanted to think it was Abouzari going up a level but the gulf between him and nolf was huge.

Biggest winner out of thar 74kg situation is AM Yazdani. I don't actually know what the selection cycle looks like right now with the change in coaching staff. But with the referee controversy in his match at the nationals combined with Abouzari getting demolished by Nolf and Emami losing too. I think he can throw his hat back in for selection. Let's see what happens....I'd be shocked if the 74kg rep is anyone other than Emami or Yazdani. Until today I thought it was set to be Emami to be honest.

    Nolf defeats Abouzari 10-1

Abouzari started well but totally gassed early in the second period and it was one way traffic from then. A bit similar to some of the DT-Yazdani matches (or a lot of USA-Iran matches)

    Three upsets of the day:

    - Abouzari defeats Emami 4*-4

    - Chance Marsteller (usually at 79kg) defeats Osman Nurmagamedov (usually at 92kg) at 86kg

    - Zahid Valencia loses 10-2 in the first round to an unknown Ukrainian at 86kg (how the hell did Azarpira lose to this guy)

Tomorrow should be better with Ghasempour, Azarpira, Zare and Masoumi. I predict Zare to win Gold and Azarpira to win Silver

Penn state vs Iran more like.

They know what they are doing there in Penn state!

    Zagreb Open - 10-15 January 2024 (FS 10th and 11th Jan)

    Iran is sending (for FS):

    65kg:

    - Savadkouhi

    - Amouzad

    74kg:

    - Abouzari

    - Emami

    79kg:

    - Azami

    - Nokhodi

    86kg:

    - Vafaeipour

    97kg:

    - Ghasempour

    - Azarpira

    125kg:

    - Masoumi

    - Zare

Also wrestling: Yianni (65kg), Burroughs (74kg), Valencia (86kg), Snyder (97kg), Geno (125kg) and Mason Parris (125kg). 74kg and 125kg are very strong here, but 97kg is quite weak other than Snyder. This should be very fun.

We are also sending a GR team: Sohrabi (67kg), Abdi (77kg), Mohmadi (87kg), Hedayati (130kg)

Strange no Javan or anyone at 57.

I'm guessing this will determine also potentially who comes out on top for Olympic selection..

Eyes have to be on 97kg. That's gonna be interesting.

Savadkhouhi defeated Ali Reza Karimi.  Last I read he is going to face Azimi in the finals.

Little Yaz lost in 74 to Adel Panahiam.  Emami is not participating in this event.

I believe it is Savadkouhi vs Vafaei in the finals. But its hard following on socials.

Little Yaz losing is a huge blow for him. Looking like Ahmadjavan, Amouzad, Emami, Kamran/Azarpira and Zare for the team. Obviously there are still challenges.

Yazdani of course too. I would love to see him vs Savadkouhi at 86 with him being cornered by Reza Yazdani. Big stuff.

  11. Azarpira wins nationals at 97 beating Mohammadian!

97kg spot will likely be between him and Kamran now.

Ahmadjavan wins at 57kg. Likely he will take the spot too I guess. The selection cycle was determined by Pejman, I don't know if Mohsen Kaveh will stick to it or not but I assume son.

Interested to see who's gonna win at 86kg nationals. Some big names there, Savadkouhi has gone up, Mobin Azimi has come down. I think Azimi just beat Savadkouhi actually....

I would not write off Azarpira

I love Kamran, but I just think he is way too small for 97

he is natural 86, looked small for 92 but his skills overcame his size disadvantage

He is small. I really think he is.

The top brass feel Hassan and Kamran are Iran's best wrestlers though. Which is arguably true. But want them to be in the Olympics badly. They are two 86kg wrestlers. Kamran won't make 86kg again now after bulking. But he's now a 92kg wrestler. Still not a 97kg wrestler.

I'm not writing Azarpira off, I've rated him for a while but even if he beats Mohammadian I don't see him beating Kamran. I imagine Kamran would rather face Azarpira than Mohammadian though.

I just read about Golji’s loss

apparently he had asked for a delay due to his injury , but it was not granted.  He fell behind 5-1 and did not continue.

I am not a fan of his, but feel bad for him

I honestly haven't followed what the selection cycle is like. They may pull him back in but I doubt it.

It Will be between Kamran and Mohammadian I reckon.  I rate Azarpira but think he is too green to beat these two.

I think these days Kamran is better p4p than Mohammadian. But Mohammadian is good and has that size advantage. I struggle to see Kamran beating him. But if Kamran can't beat him he won't be able to touch the big dogs at 97kg

    Please God no

How many chances will we give this guy

I mean if the guy beats everyone in his weight in the country he deserves the chance no?

He wrestles Azarpira in the tournament final tomorrow.

I reckon winner of this somewhere down the line wrestles Kamran for the Olympic spot or they might send them to a international tournament.

    Goleij lost today

Hey sorry for late reply. Yeah I've heard hr has injured his groin area again. Which is a bummer.

I heard somewhere Goleij is injured too but not sure if that is the case or not. 97kg will be interesting today at national championships. Mohammadian, Goleij, Azarpira and Ghasempour were all supposed to wrestle before Kamran's injury.
