  1. What is the IHSWCA up to?

For a volunteer job, I know my plate is getting pretty full.

Scholastic Duals  (weekend away from family)

IN/IL duals (weekend away from family)

Academic Sr. AllState and man table at state tourney

Junior All-State ? Academic and man table at state tourney

Middle School State Finals (Sunday away from the family)

Coach of the Year for each regional voting

Coach of the year for the state voting

Hall of fame selection committee (sunday away from the family)

Host hall of fame banquet (sunday away from the family)

Conduct the yearly survey at sectionals

Hosting a Fall clinic (that I have to miss school for)

Hosting a spring clinic (that I have to miss school for)

Meet once a month with any association member that wants to come (sunday away from family)

Meet once a month with the officers to make sure we are getting our jobs done (evening away from family)

    the UNITE magazine

    Coaching Milestones

meetings with the IHSAA that are during the school day (up to 7 times a year that we miss school)

---and now the IHSWCA Team State tourney - or whatever you choose to refer to it as. (now another day away from family)

Get involved and we can do even more, it is a volunteer job with no perks.....just knowing your helping kids.

Many of the officers or regional reps also sit on ISWA, and HYWAY boards so their hands are full.  We can do more when we get others on board.

And we all coach our own teams too and have all those commitments

    get involved - dstruck@gcs.k12.in.us

Thank you for doing all this for Indiana high school wrestling, especially the kids.

  2. I avoid the first two rounds at Merrillville because of the crowd. I am sure I am not the only one. The only way I would go is if I had a family member wrestling. It's a shame because the second round at semi-state is the most exciting round of the tournament. But if you're just attending strictly as a fan it is not feasible to go, unless you get the super early, and then you feel like you're taking a mother's spot. Just not a good situation in the first two rounds.

I heard Bobby Cox attended a while back and proclaimed that it was fine. I'm not sure where he sat. Sure, you can find a seat in the nosebleeds on the one side of the gym from which you can only see 2 mats, but who wants to do that. I tend to believe the people who say it is all about keeping one Merrillville person happy, because I can't think of any other reasonable explanation why it hasn't been changed after all these years.

  3. I think an IHSWCA classed team state duals trophy win carry more weight than even the best super dual in the state (Traicoff, Bellmont, whatever), but less weight than an IHSAA trophy. Assuming everything with the IHSWCA event goes smoothly as far as the best teams getting invited and actually coming, I think most schools would proudly and prominently display the trophy, although I doubt they would go as far as to buy rings.

  4. That was hilarious.

However, I'll give credit to the Northwestern students that covered the NW vs. Indiana dual meet on BTN. They knew exactly what was going on and gave good commentary. One of the guys had a lisp but in this day in age there's nothing wrong with that. Or so I've been told.

That is because Northwestern students are smart!

  5. who are the best champs in the last 10 years at each weight?

    my picks

hwt- toss up between chico adams, dexter lairmore, and chris kasten.

Wow, look at all the region guys! Not saying you're wrong though. The region has put out some unbelievable wrestlers over the past decade. I'd say it has been the golden age of region wrestling. Also, I would take Jason over Alex as a senior, but I realize that's a debate that could go on forever and there is no clear favorite.

  6. the problem is that when the kid was slammed they awarded the 2 for a takedown then waited about 10 seconds and the kid called "HIS OWN INJURY TIME" then after a few seconds he got up walked around  and said he couldn't continue then he went to the trainer and hoped up on their table like it was nothing.

It was definitely a slam. Even you seem to agree that it was a slam ("when the kind was slammed"). The head ref missed the call and let the action continue while the CP wrestler writhed in pain. The assistant ref made the right call by letting the head ref know it was a slam. And I think it is rather controversial of you to suggest the CP wrestler took a dive. I really have no idea, but I would never suggest that without it being substantiated. Plus, I don't recall seeing him the finals match.

  7. Very exciting final team state. I thought the Penn vs. Cathedral, and especially the Crown Point vs. Cathedral, matches were very fun to watch.

I was a little disappointed in the Mater Dei vs. Perry Meridian match, but I think that just goes to show how much better Perry Meridian was than everyone else. Congratulations to Perry Meridian!! They were awesome yesterday.

It was also neat to see Bellmont and Mater Dei going at it in the final team state.

  8. Each member school shall observe a moratorium week starting on Monday of the week which includes July 4th, either IHSAA calendar Week 52 or Week 1. During this seven day period, there shall be no contact between athletes and coaches, and no athletic activities, including conditioning, conducted.

I am not a coach, nor am I associated with any program, so take my opinion for what it's worth; but I think that if the IHSAA didn't want wrestlers going to Disney, they could have easily interpreted the rule in such a way that would disallow them from going. They could have said the volunteers with the wrestlers during the moratorium are for all intents and purposes "coaches," especially because they are taking over for the coaches who leave once the moratorium starts. And there really is no question that competing at Disney counts as an "athletic activity," which is "conducted."  I'm not saying the teams that go are breaking the rule, because the IHSAA has supposedly said they are not. What I am saying is the fact that the IHSAA approved of teams going to Disney with this arrangement tells me they don't mind; and therefore there is no reason to worry about the IHSAA retaliating against wrestling, or looking unfavorably upon wrestling coaches, for skirting the rules or violating the "spirit"of the rule. I hope this doesn't get me into trouble with the moderators ;D

  9. This is from the Northwest Indiana Times: http://www.nwitimes.com/high-school/crown-point/halsted-c-p-hope-to-relive-magic-as-ihsaa-stages/article_5988e60f-eb6e-5983-91b7-82ba22fff170.html

CROWN POINT | On every main thoroughfare into Crown Point there is a red sign in the shape of Indiana boasting the local school's 2009 state title in wrestling.

In the Crown Point High School wrestling room there is a single white sign, another Indiana silhouette, with the same reminder.

Cameron Halsted is filled with nostalgia every time he sees one of those tangible reminders.

"Every time I come down one of those roads, some memory pops into my head when I see those signs," Halsted said. "It was a great day with great memories.

  10. I believe the reason for not having this rule in high school is because there is less room out of bounds in high school than there is in college. Plus, some gyms in high school are small, and the mats run up close to the walls--this is especially true in tourneys when there are multiple mats on the floor. So I think safety issues are what is going to keep this rule from being implemented in high school. I agree that ideally we would have the college rule though.

  11. Check this out benni, I sat over at RWA throughout Sept. and Oct. and watched a revolving door of some of the top 140#-170# kids from Wis. Mich. and IL.(all state/Fargo placers and a several state/Fargo champs) desend on NWI to get a shot at JT in RWA's room. All were accommodated. We would stick around after our own practice and be treated to some extremly high level wrestling. It was a treat!! I'll say this they all got their shot and all went away empty handed. And I mean some of the most utter domination I've seen, with some kids much bigger than him. So it would seem that comical arrogance might be the wrong choice of words. Dizzy Dean said "it aint braggin if you back it up". I think you've mistaken confidence for arrogance. JT is, without question one of the softest spoken humble kids I've ever been around.

I also think Benni Hanna is misstating what Tsirtsis said in the article. I read the article, and if my memory serves, he said something like he would take on anyone in any weight class. I don't think he said he could beat everyone in the state. There is a difference.

  12. assuming its the same sectional line up. the line ups should be:

               MD                      PM

    106:Seng                        Cottey

    113:Johnson                 James

    120:Goebal                    Kenny

    126:Pierre                      LeCount

    132:Schroeder              McKinley

    138:Lannert                 Bova

    145:Bassmeier              McClurg

    152:Folz                          Mathews

    160:Parkinson              Johnson

    170:Inj. Def.                 Masengale

    182:Brandenstein      Martin

    195:Maurer                  Ash

    220:Collins                   Naughton

    HWT:Wright               Winfield

Excuse me on spellings. most of these are just coming from memory. Predictions?

I doubt Mater Dei will injury default 170, what with their vaunted junior varsity studs ready to step up at a moment's notice. I think this will be a great dual. The semis at team state figure to be pretty exciting: PM against MD and CP against either Cathedral or Penn. I haven't double checked this, but off the top of my head, I think it is possible there could be near 30 state qualifiers in the semis of team state. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but that's pretty amazing.

  13. He was a runner up in a weight class that many people thought was very weak last year. He was also getting dominated before he caught Boomsma in the semis.

Also everyone knows how hard it is for a kid to bump up from 103 to 119/120 and still be as successful. Galka was only a state qualifier at 119 and a lot of people thought hed be a 4xer when he won state as a freshman. Fuqua is tough, but i don't think that makes a good arguement for this  year being tougher then the others mentioned.

Points well taken. I still think he beats half the guys in this weight class. My point was that if he was here, the weight class would be even tougher. But I agree going from 103 as a frosh to 120, it is very difficult to even make it to state much less place.

  14. Great post. I think to most wrestlers, the agony of defeat far outweighs the satisfaction of victory. When you're done with your career, whether it be coaching or competing, or both, you'll be able to put things into perspective.

  15. I'll bet if the officials got on here and said things about coaches and fans there would be an uproar. Why is there a double standard?

This is why I didn't name the officials, wrestlers, or weight class in my post. I have a lot of respect for officials and realize they are only human, and they're trying to do the best they can. That being said, I think it is legitimate to discuss in general terms calls you saw that you disagreed with. As long as you're not identifying or attacking anyone I don't see the problem.
