  1. Tell City, Southridge, North Posey, Paoli, South Spencer, Mater Dei .... None of those teams are 1A if going by football standards

The class breakdowns are not the same as the ones used in football. There are only three classes as opposed to the five used in football. The precise breakdown of the schools is listed somewhere on this board, and 1A does include all of those schools.

  2. WOW! Does that mean Kemper won't be going to Regionals?

I am not there so I can't confirm any results, but if you look at the brackets these two would meet in match 237 to see who wrestles for 3rd & 4th. So, yes, if these results are accurate, that would mean that Kemper would not be going to regionals.

  3. Here is Mater Dei's line-up:

106- Wyatt Seng, wrestled for St. Philip K-8.

113-  Alex Johnson, wrestled for Westside Catholic K-8.

120- Sam Goebel, wrestled for St. Philip K-8.

126- Josh Pierre, wrestled for Weside Catholic K-8.

132-  Branson Schroeder, wrestled for Resurrection K-8.

138-  Jake Lannert, wrestled for St. Joe K-8.

145-  Alex Bassemier, wrestled for St. Philip K-8.

152-  Logan Folz, wrestled for St. Philip K-8.

160-  Mahlon Parkinson, wrestled for St. Philip K-8.

170 - Alex Schneider, wrestled for St. Joe K-8.

182-  Dalton Brandenstein, wrestled for Resurrection K-8.

195-  Dane Maurer, wrestled for St. Joe K-8.

220-  Evan Collins,  wrestled for Holy Redeemer and St. Joe K-8

275-  Nathan Wright, wrestled for St. Joe K-8

All of the varsity members wrestled for the Mater Dei Junior Wildcats.  If you keep your old ISWA books, look up these names and you will find them listed multiple times.  St. James, Holy Redeemer, Corpus Christi and St. Wendel also feed into Mater Dei and regularly contribute to the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.

This year's edition is a typical Mater Dei team:  The average member has ten+ years of wrestling experience, wrestled for a top-notch middle school program and grew up in an incredibly tough and competitive grade school league.  Additionally, this team is followed and zealously supported by a very large, loyal and dedicated fan base.

So the ACTUAL STATISTICS show that if Mater Dei is recruiting, they must be going after 4 or 5 year olds to draw them into the feeder system.

My question is, why don't they recruit better wrestlers? Their wrestlers are rarely dominant in the individual state tourney, and MD has never produced a wrestler that went on to be dominant in college. In fact, VERY few MD wrestlers have gone on to wrestle varsity at the D1 college level -- I am guessing around 5, but that may be high. As the above poster pointed out, this team is not made up of elite wrestler-athletes. If they recruit, they do a very poor job.

  4. Mater Dei beat castle 60-12. Sources say horrible crowd turnout and very sloppy wrestling. Luke Welch from Castle and Jake Lannert from Mater Dei looked good.

Poor turnout would be a surprise. Sloppy wrestling would not. MD made it to state in football, so quite a few of their wrestlers have only been on the mat a few weeks.

Where is this tourney? MD used to pack in the fans no matter where the venue.

  5. It doesn't seem like MD is very active on this board. The scores of their tourney last week haven't been posted yet, either. I would really like to see the individual results, but even the team scores would be nice.

    Anyone?

    ???

  6. I believe Mater Dei goes to Missouri and usually matches up with Merrillville.  The Pirates have this young lad named Kourtney Berry who will provide a stiff test for him.  Also, Mater Dei has a solid schedule so he should be tested throughout the season.

I thought the same thing and checked into that. It looks like MD and Merriville are going to two different tournaments in St. Louis this year, unless one of the schools has their athletic calendar wrong. They usually met at the Gateway duals, but Merriville's website says they are going to the Christian Brothers HS tourney this year.

  7. Two years ago he beat Brandenstein for a folkstyle state title.

So he is not starting from scratch. I don't see any Southern Indiana 195's ranked at this point. I wonder if he will face any high quality opponents early that could provide a "talent-gauge".

Anyone have any input on other 195's that will face Maurer during the season?

  8. "What if there was a way to present a team's case without a person knowing who that team was? If  the names of the schools were removed, bias is also removed. All a committee can see is "Team X" not EMD, not Mishawaka, not Bellmont, none of that. Just the letter "X or Y" and some information.

I understand your intent to eliminate bias, but "blind" selection would lead to a lot more mistakes than bias would. There is a reason EMD, Mishawaka, Bellmont et al return to team state nearly every year, even when they only return 5 or 6 starters. They are well established, deep programs, and their reserves could most often be wrestling varsity on other squads.

Just to illustrate, if you took the name "Mater Dei" off and reported that a team had only 1 returning state place-winner and 2 other qualifiers, that team wouldn't even be under consideration for an invitation. But is there anyone who really thinks Mater Dei won't be in the top 6 or 8 teams of their class this year?

  9. It seems to me that Coach Snyder really takes issue with the with the "one invite every three years" rule, and Coach Peck is saying that this rule can be taken out as soon as year 2.

I have to agree with Coach Snyder. If that rule is in place, the tournament will not determine the best team in the state, nor even the most probable best team (as a top 8 ranked, invite only tourney would do). With the "one invite every three years" rule in place, the tourney doesn't really offer much. Top flight teams could go to better tourneys elsewhere.

And if the rule could be changed in year 2, why include it in the first place? Why undermine the whole reason for having this tournament by injecting a rule that is so pointless that you are willing to discard it in year 2? What, really, do you gain by including it?

  10. This page has stayed very quiet.  No interest in the SIAC this year?  Let's here some predictions

The team that generates the most interest -- Mater Dei -- just finished its football season yesterday. I don't think anyone has information about personnel, weights, etc. yet. There just isn't much to talk about.

  11. why all the "sad days" comments?....I think its great !!!

    ff

For those who will come on this discussion down the road, when Fearless Fly posted this, he had "666" as is post total, and 6 cool points. So, Fearless Fly bears the mark of the beast and his opinion should be considered in that light. That picture being right under the 666 really adds to the effect. Too funny!

[FF -- I hope you know I'm not serious]

  12. Stunning. Insanity. Someone (or lots of someones) got caught looking ahead. I can't remember the last time MD gave up 4 pins in one meet.

I can't even find the words to describe this...

Congrats to Lawrence North, what a performance! Those young men came and wrestled their butts off.

  13. To state the obvious, a pin would really be great here.

I don't like that 189 matchup for MD. They better be up by more than three going into that one or I am going to have to start drinking. Too much coffee today, the ticker can't handle much more.

I don't think MD thinks they have it in the bag, I would say they probably thought a rested Bassemeier was better than a beat up Weinzapfel.

  14. I suppose there is a lot of wrestling to be done, but I think MD had a HUGE letdown this match.

That is not to take anything away from Lawrence North, they have a great program and came to wrestle. We shall see...

  15. Only one real surprise thus far, I think (112).

    How about now?

When was the last time MD gave up this many pins? They better get their heads out of their @$$es or they are going to blow this.

The CP match is over boys, but the tournament isn't!!!!!!

  16. Your kidding right? The coaches take a state champ out of the line because they made a mistake and it is a team loss ::) If I were the coaches I would step up and take full responsibility for this loss. Regardless of how you play it out the second best person on their team did not wrestle because of the coaches.

Could you point out where his analysis is wrong? This was a bonehead move, but even if Roach wrestles that doesn't give CP the win.

  17. I haven't seen any analysis of this matchup so I can't tell if this would have been expected at this point, but is this looking like a huge upset in the making?

Or, given the matchups that remain, should I not be worried (obviously, I'm for MD)?

    Anyone....?

  18. Roach beat Sims last year 145 quarters by 7-3.  I wonder what Roach weighed in today at.  He would have to be an underdog giving up 15 lbs. to Sims this year, or even 8.

Sims WBF 1:59 over Shurg in State prelims.  Staying off his back for 6 minutes this week would have been a big challenge.

This isn't last year. Clearly Sims developed quite a bit physically since that point and Roach stayed pretty much the same. 15 pounds is a lot of weight to give up to that high a caliber of wrestler.

But again, that move was illegal. The question is, what effect does having Roach at 152 have. And I would contend that the outcome of the meet was not decided by this coaching blunder. Yes it was stupid, and if I were CP's coach I would be REALLY mad at myself, but I would not say that the loss is his fault.
