  2. I know that the qualifying for state deal was not received with open arms. But.... this is what I’m seeing. Freestyle state numbers have risen for the first time in a long while (the last couple years). And... I’m seeing some quality freestyle at the locals! Is it just me? Anybody else seeing better freestyle matches this season? Also... great job by the ISWA for allowing other tournaments count as qualifiers. Freestyle is making a comeback here.

Mendez is in solid position to secure the Pan Am spot, the guy that beat him in Greco didn't enter freestyle. Only two other Greco placers made the freestyle podium, Ramon Ramos(3rd) and Benjamin Alanis(5th). Mendez already has more points than Alanis and will basically need to not finish more than two spots behind Ramos. Ramos has Boarman in the morning. Allred's path is a little more complicated, but he controls his own fate. The champ from Greco is in the consolations so if Allred makes the finals he should be good to go. The other semi-finals has the 3rd and 4th place finishers from Greco and the Greco champ could obviously wrestle back to 3rd.

He did look big - but I am skeptic of methods...

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first year Micic really had to cut a bit of weight to make 133 compared to years previous; he looked like a combination of a growth spurt and muscle gain. Making 57 kilograms/125.4 pounds will be no easy task.

Allred & Mendez advance to Cadet Freestyle Semi’s. Both in great position to secure the weight with Team USA for Pan Am’s. Lee, Lohrey, Dickens and Walker all advance to Junior Freestyle Semi’s. Quite a few hammers still wrestling back in consi’s at both levels. Including Seltzer, Parkinson, Erb & Boarman. Semi-Finals begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.

Boarman hit a nice inside trip when they were both going upper body. Great match and Mendez looked a little more savvy in freestyle.

Christian Carroll places 7th with his placement win over a 2x Michigan D3 placer(4th @ 171 in 2018, 6th @ 189 this year). He’s for sure one of our freshman studs to look out for next year.

  22. Maybe I am misinterpreting the above post, but the MS team doesn’t have wrestle offs as it is. They select 1st and 2nd from MS State, and then down from there. And the weight factor is an issue, for sure. My son got 3rd this year and was invited, but part of the reason I declined is because I didn’t want to commit him to that weight two months down the road. I do believe matside weigh ins for MSS would help.

Allred and Mendez both drop their finals matches. The main reason for the event is qualifying for the Pan Am team. They only take ONE wrestler per weight so there is a scoring system in place to determine who they will take. If they were to tie with someone the first choice would be the person with the most falls in the least amount of time throughout both events.

2019 MS Heartland Duals Gold and Blue Teams

This was the last "youth" dual for most of the 8th graders. Good job men! Out of the Gold MS team, there were a plethora of boys that joined Buxton, ScorpionsDynasty, M2 or other high end east coast all-star teams this past off season and we were hopeful about what Heartland would bring if everyone stuck it out and went together as Team Indiana... Wrestler selection: There probably needs to be a balance of fair/equitable approaches with pragmatism... Example: if a young man cuts >10% of wt for MS state, what's the probability he would be able to do the same >60 days later (after the spring break time frame)? I'd hazard a guess that there's probably not enough trust to move to a selection process vs. wrestle-off, though... Not sure if a matside weigh-in would help in that regard or not I will say that Minnesota seems to have it figured out. They have been consistently tough over the last 4 years we've traveled out there. Does anyone know their process for team selection, costs, etc? Thank you to the coaches and other folks who helped coordinate these events... Can't wait to see what these young men do over the next 4-5 years!
