Congrats to the Trine wrestling team. They went over to the KNox College Chuck Porter duals, and went 4-0 on the day while giving up 12 points right off the bat by not having their 125, 133 guys there. A number of the guys went 4-0 on the day, and if memory serves, they only lost 4 matches that were actually wrestled, and those were all matches that were very close and could have gone either way.

2.26 - Larson, Fleet qualify, Markou first alternate for Nationals

Crawfordsville, Ind. - Two Trine wrestlers are heading to the NCAA Division III

National championship and another could make the tournament.

Trine?s Elias Larson (Orland Park, Ill./Marion Catholic) and Alex

Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) became just the second and third wrestlers in program

history to advance to the event after claiming individual titles at the Midwest

Regional Saturday.

The individual titles are the first since the program started in 2003.  ?When we started

the program this is what we expected,? Trine Head Coach Dan Callahan said,

?I am not satisfied, I think we could have placed a few others, but this is a huge step

for the program.?

The national round is March 11 and 12 at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse

in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  Click here for Championship information.

Fleet, a senior, entered the tournament as the top seed in 197 weight class and

maintained that status slipping past sixth-seeded Austin O?Neil of Wabash 4-3

in the championship. Fleet defeated Casey Bushong of Manchester 13-2 and

Justin Leonard of Olivet 3-2 earlier in the day.

For Fleet it?s the culmination of three-years of consistent hard work. ?I am so happy

for Alex, he?s placed third, fifth and third (in the previous three regionals). He?s been

so close. This year he?s peaking at the right time. He?s wrestling as good as I?ve ever

seen him,? Callahan said.

Larson was the second-seed in the 157 and went undefeated in three matches to claim the championship. Larson blanked fifth-seed Garett Johnson of Waynesburg 12-6 to advance. Larson also blanked Thomas Fehring of Mount St. Joseph 10-0 and pinned Chandler Pogue of Manchester (2:40) in preliminary rounds.

Callahan has never doubted the sophomores potential, even as a high school recruit, but he saw Larson in a new light this season.  ?When he won at Wheaton and Wharton, I knew Eli was capable of wrestling with the best in the country. Now here?s his chance. I really think he can be an All-American.?

George Markou (Peru, Ind./Peru) finished second in 174, dropping a 6-2 decision to Trevor Tyler of Olivet. Jason Alber  (165, Manchester, Mich./Manchester) and Ryan Pieper (184,Onsted, Mich./Onsted) both finished fourth.  Forest Romer (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) was sixth in 141.

Trine?s Nick Kraus was the first Thunder wrestler to advance to the Division III championship in 2010
