UFC 119 targeted for Sept. 25 in Indianapolis, Mitrione vs. Beltran on tap

by Steven Marrocco and Dann Stupp on May 28, 2010 at 8:15 pm ET

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is expected to make its Indiana debut when it hosts UFC 119 in Indianapolis on Sept. 25.

A source close to the event today alerted MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of the likely event.

The show is expected to take place at the 18,000-seat Conseco Fieldhouse, though an agreement with the venue is not signed. However, at least one heavyweight bout is already in the works for the event.

A source close to the competitors today told MMAjunkie.com a bout between "The Ultimate Fighter 10" cast member and NFL vet Matt Mitrione (2-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and rising prospect Joey Beltran (12-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is in the works for the show, though bout agreements have not been signed.

UFC executives have not officially announced the event, and the Indiana Athletic Commission currently has no UFC events on its calendar. Additionally, it's not known if the likely show will air on pay-per-view or Spike TV. Today, UFC president Dana White told a crowd at UFC Fan Expo 2010 that he plans to offer an upcoming major event for for free on Spike TV as his long-promised atonement for UFC 112, a pay-per-view event that ended on a sour note with the heavily panned Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia title fight.

Indiana began regulation MMA just this past year. Although Indiana had hosted numerous un-sanctioned MMA shows in recent years, official regulation kept organizations such as the UFC out of the Hoosier State.

Indianapolis is Indiana's most populous city (and the country's 14th largest) with approximately 800,000 residents. The city is home to popular UFC veteran Chris Lytle.

Melvin Guillard vs. Jeremy Stephens targeted for UFC 119 main card in Indy

by Steven Marrocco on Jun 07, 2010 at 5:10 pm ET

Melvin Guillard wanted it, and he got it.

The UFC lightweight will tangle with Jeremy Stephens on UFC 119's main card, according to sources close to the event who told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the fighters are expected to sign bout agreements shortly.

Guillard (24-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) perked up ears when he called out Stephens (17-5 MMA, 5-4 UFC) following his first-round TKO of Waylon Lowe ? his second UFC win earned with a body-shot ? at UFC 114.

As MMAjunkie.com first reported, UFC 119 is expected to take place Sept. 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, though the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

You could say the two hard-slugging lightweights have been on a collision course.

Guillard, 27, has regained career momentum after taking residence with famed trainer Greg Jackson. Once a fighter with exceptional stand-up skills and a questionable ground game, "The Young Assassin" has rounded out his game with diligent work on his takedown defense and grappling skills.

A veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter 2," Guillard's notable octagon blemishes come from submission-saavy fighters such as Joe Stevenson, Rich Clementi and Nate Diaz.

The victory over Lowe, a wrestler by trade, was Guillard's second consecutive victory after he bested jiu-jitsu proponent Ronys Torres in February at UFC 109.

Stephens, meanwhile, shrugged off a two-fight slide to expert grapplers Joe Lauzon and Gleison Tibau with recent back-to-back wins over Justin Buchholz and Sam Stout. Both victories earned the 24-year-old performance bonuses: a "Knockout of the Night" check in the win over Buchholz and a "Fight of the Night"bonus for the victory over Stout in his most recent appearance at UFC 113.

Stephens retooled his training with a more permanent move to San Diego, where he works with the Throwdown Elite Training Center. A Des Moines, Iowa native, Stephens scored a homerun-punch knockout of Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 91 in November 2008 to add to his growing highlight reel.

They have to get Chris Lytle on this card.  Also, I wished they would have pushed Fitch-Alves back to this card since it kept getting postponed anyway.

I don't think they would have Rua/Evans and Jackson/Machida on the same card in Indianapolis.  I would love it if it happened, but they could headline two different cards with those fights.

If anyone  hears the medical suspensions from UFC 116 (specifically for Brock) list it here.  UFC officials told both Carwin and Brock that the winner was going to get Cain Velasquez at UFC 119!!!! Hopefully we get to see that match-up in INDY!

Brock Lesnar: suspended until Aug. 18 with no contact until Aug. 3 for right eyelid and left eyebrow lacerations

Looks like he will be good to go! Let us just hope Dana gets him back in the cage because it sounds like Brock wants a bit of time off.

T.J. Grant vs. Julio Paulino in the works for UFC 119 in September

by Steven Marrocco on Jul 06, 2010 at 5:10 pm ET

A welterweight contest between T.J. Grant (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Julio Paulino (17-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is on tap for UFC 119.

Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the fighters have verbally agreed to the contest and are expected to finalize bout agreements shortly.

UFC 119 takes place Sept. 25 at the 18,000-seat Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Grant was one of six Canadian fighters who fell short at UFC 113 in the promotion's third trip to Montreal. The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, native fought a back-and-forth battle with Johny Hendricks and lost by majority decision, which brought his octagon win percentage to .500.

Previously, Grant sent Kevin Burns packing from the UFC with a TKO win at UFC 107 this past December.

Meanwhile, Paulino recently got back to the gym following a back injury which forced him to withdraw from a bout with Daniel Roberts at this past Saturday's UFC 116 (Forrest Petz eventually took the fight and lost to Roberts by split decision).

The man nicknamed "The Dominican Demon" met disappointment in his octagon debut when he took on Mike Pierce at "UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones" and lost a unanimous decision. It was his first loss in seven fights and two-plus years of professional competition.

The placement of Grant vs. Paulino on UFC 119's card is unknown at this time, though an non-televised slot is likely.

C.B. Dollaway vs. Joe Doerksen targeted for UFC 119 in Indianapolis

by Steven Marrocco on Jul 02, 2010 at 2:00 pm ET

C.B. Dollaway (10-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Joe Doerksen (46-12 MMA, 2-5 UFC) are on tap for the UFC's first trip to Indiana.

The middleweights have agreed to face each other at UFC 119, which takes place Sept. 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed that verbal agreements are in place but that bout agreements have not been signed for the fight, which was first reported by topmmanews.com.

It's not clear if the fight will be part of the night's main card or preliminary card.

Dollaway, who recently left his longtime home at Arizona Combat Sports, has not fought since February's UFC 110 event, where he beat the returning Goran Reljic by unanimous decision.

A finalist on "The Ultimate Fighter 7," Dollaway set himself apart from the reality-show pack early with solid wrestling skills and the use of the rarely seen "Peruvian necktie" choke. Although he fell short to Amir Sadollah at the show's finale, he submitted would-be finalist Jesse Taylor with the signature choke in his first post-"TUF" fight.

Dollaway's victory over Reljic was his second consecutive octagon victory after he bested Jay Silva on points at UFC Fight Night 19.

Doerksen, meanwhile, earned a third lease on his UFC career when he stepped in on short notice to fight Tom Lawlor at UFC 113 and won a convincing second-round submission. The Canadian followed the triumph with a recent first-round TKO victory over Sean Marchand in a regional Canadian promotion.

The hard-nosed veteran's previous UFC career was marked by disappointment. In two separate stints for the promotion, he went 1-5 against some of the middleweight division's toughest opponents. Prior to his recent win, he dropped two consecutive fights against Ed Herman and Jason MacDonald, which at the time resulted in a contract termination.

An 11-year veteran of the sport, Doerksen's submission skills have earned 33 of his 46 career wins

Quinton Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira targeted, UFC 119 or UFC 120 likely

by John Morgan and Dann Stupp on Jul 01, 2010 at 1:15 pm ET

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (30-8 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (19-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) have agreed to meet in an upcoming light-heavyweight superfight, though an exact date hasn't been decided for the bout.

Sources close to the competitors told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) verbal agreements are in place but that bout agreements have not been distributed.

And though the fight would appear a perfect headliner for September's UFC 119 event, a source said October UFC 120 or UFC 121 slots are also possibilities.

UFC 119 takes place Sept. 25 in Indianapolis, and UFC 120 takes place Oct. 16 in London. UFC 121, meanwhile, is still in the planning stages but expected in late October or early November.

Jackson, a former UFC light-heavyweight champion, recently returned from a 14-month layoff and dropped a unanimous decision to Rashad Evans at UFC 114. The loss (his first since losing his belt to Forrest Griffin in 2008) followed a knockout victory over Wanderlei Silva and a decision win over Keith Jardine.

Now in need of a quality win to get back in the title picture, Jackson meets a fellow ex-PRIDE star in Nogueira. "Little Nog," the twin brother of former UFC champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, made his UFC debut in 2009 and has since earned a TKO win over Luiz Cane at UFC 106 and a controversial split-decision victory over Jason Brilz and UFC 114.

Although the Brilz victory came with heavy criticism (he won via scores 28?29, 29?28 and 29?28 despite Brilz's impressive showing), Nogueira owns a seven-fight win streak stretching back to his days with Affliction and World Victory Road.

Evan Dunham and Sean Sherk targeted for lightweight matchup at UFC 119

by Steven Marrocco on Jul 07, 2010 at 5:45 pm ET

Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk (33-4-1 MMA, 7-4 UFC) is expected to clash with fast-rising prospect Evan Dunham (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at UFC 119.

News of the impending match-up was relayed today to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) by sources close to the promotion, who said that both fighters have agreed to the matchup and are expected to put pen to paper shortly.

UFC 119 takes place Sept. 25 at the 18,000-seat Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and airs live on pay-per-view.

The position of Sherk vs. Dunham on UFC 119's fight card is unknown at this time, though its all but certain to grace the upper tier of televised bouts.

Sherk, 36, has not been seen in the cage since UFC 98, when he dropped a unanimous decision loss to now-champion Frankie Edgar. He was originally scheduled to fight Rafaello Oliveira at UFC 108 but fell prey to the event's injury curse after agreeing to fight Jim Miller on the night's main card.

Two months later, Sherk was scratched from a bout with Clay Guida at UFC on Versus 1 due to another undisclosed injury. Since then, the former champion has been whisper-quiet on his career plans.

A disciple of Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts, Sherk dropped to lightweight when the UFC re-introduced the 155-pound belt at UFC 64. In a bloody fight, he defeated Kenny Florian to become the promotion's second champion in the weight class.

Sherk defended the belt against Hermes Franca at UFC 73, but his title was taken away five months later when the California State Athletic Commission flagged him for performance enhancers. He steadfastly denied the use of any illegal substances.

Sherk returned to action almost a year later and failed to regain his title at UFC 84 when B.J. Penn ? who had scooped up the undisputed belt against Joe Stevenson at UFC 80, beat him by TKO.

The 28-year-old Dunham, meanwhile, put his jiu-jitsu black belt to impressive use with a decision victory over division standout Tyson Griffin at UFC 115. The Oregon native surprised many fans by controlling Griffin, a well-known escape artist, on the canvas and keeping back control throughout much of the fight.

The victory built on another savvy grappling performance when Dunham armbarred "The Ultimate Fighter 8" winner Efrain Escudero and picked up an extra $30,000 check for "Submission of the Night."

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Ryan Bader tapped UFC 119 co-headliner

by John Morgan and Dann Stupp on Jul 08, 2010 at 12:05 pm ET

UFC 119 still needs a headliner, but the night's co-main-event slot soon will be filled.

That co-headliner spot goes to a light-heavyweight bout between contenders Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (19-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Ryan Bader (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC).

Sources close to both competitors told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that bout agreements have not been signed but that verbal agreements in are in place.

Although not officially announced, UFC 119 takes place Sept. 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Nogueira enters the fight with seven consecutive victories, including UFC wins over Luiz Cane (TKO) and Jason Brilz (close and controversial split decision). Nogueira, a former PRIDE fighter who briefly competed for Affliction Entertainment, picked up a "Knockout of the Night" bonus in the Cane fight and a "Fight of the Night" award in the Brilz fight.

He now meets Bader, who's a perfect 4-0 in the UFC, which included "The Ultimate Fighter 8" light-heavyweight championship. Since knocking out Vinny Magalhaes in the show's live finale, the former two-time Division I wrestling All-American has earned decision wins over Carmelo Marrero and Eric Schafer and a KO win over Keith Jardine.

UFC 119, which marks the UFC's Indiana debut, still needs a main-event fight. As MMAjunkie.com recently reported, the UFC approached UFC 116 headliners Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin prior to the fight and said the winner would likely meet Cain Velasquez at UFC 119. However, UFC president Dana White since has confirmed the fight has been pushed back, possibly because UFC 116 winner Lesnar and his wife are expecting a baby in the coming weeks.

Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira II headlines UFC 119 in Indianapolis

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 08, 2010 at 2:10 pm ET

A rematch between heavyweights Frank Mir (13-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) headlines September's UFC 119 event.

UFC president Dana White today confirmed the fight with MMAFighting.com, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed the booking with a source close to one of the fighters.

An official announcement of the fight and event is expected as soon as this week.

UFC 119 takes place Sept. 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Nogueira vs. Mir II, of course, wasn't the first choice for the UFC 119 headliner. As MMAjunkie.com first reported, UFC officials planned to have UFC 116's main-event winner  (champ Brock Lesnar and interim champ Shane Carwin) fight top contender Cain Velasquez at UFC 119. However, Lesnar, who earned a second-round submission win, and his wife are expecting the birth of a child in the next few weeks. Additionally, the booking would have required an abbreviated fight camp for the now-undisputed champ, who returned from a yearlong layoff (diverticulitis) for the fight.

Mir, of course, won the first meeting with Nogueira with an impressive second-round knockout at UFC 92 in December 2008. Only after the fight did we learn that Nogueira was slowed by staph-infection recovery and a knee injury. Still, Nogueira praised his opponent's performance and said he was surprised by Mir's noticeably improved striking skills.

Mir is just 1-2 since that big win, which marked Nogueira's first stoppage loss, with knockout losses to Lesnar and Carwin and a submission win over Cheick Kongo. The Carwin loss, which came at UFC 111 in March with an interim title on the line, marks his most recent outing.

Nogueira, meanwhile, also is coming off a loss. In February, he was stunned by a first-round knockout at the hands of Velasquez. The former PRIDE star set up the No. 1 contender's bout after earning a decision victory over Randy Couture this past August.

Mark Hunt confirms UFC deal, fight with Sean McCorkle at UFC 119

by Steven Marrocco on Jul 08, 2010 at 7:20 pm ET

Former K-1 and PRIDE heavyweight Mark Hunt (5-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was about to hop on a plane when he spoke today to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). And when asked to explain his sudden move into the UFC's octagon, he had one thing to say.

"Why not?"

The 36-year-old fighter confirmed a four-fight deal with the UFC and a Sept. 25 UFC 119 meeting with Midwest standout Sean McCorkle (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC).

FiveOuncesofPain.com first reported the Hunt vs. McCorkle fight, which takes place in Indianapolis.

Hunt, who hails from South Auckland, New Zealand, has not fought since May 2009, when former Strikeforce and DREAM champion Gegard Mousasi submitted him in the first round of DREAM's open-weight "Super Hulk" tournament. It was his fifth consecutive loss in MMA.

Despite his recent rough road, Hunt's earlier performances bring nostalgia to hardcore fans who witnessed his tremendous upset victories over Wanderlei Silva and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic in PRIDE's heyday.

The heavyweight also gave fans a jolt at PRIDE Shockwave 2006 when he threatened the once-invincible Fedor Emelianenko with an Americana arm lock before falling prey to the submission hold's cousin, a kimura.

As a kickboxer, Hunt has amassed a 30-13 record and holds notable K-1 victories over Stefan Leko and Jerome Le Banner.

McCorkle, an Indianapolis resident, also makes his UFC debut at UFC 119, which takes place at the 18,000-seat Conseco Fieldhouse. Thus far, he has fought as a super heavyweight with four of his seven victories coming by way of first-round stoppage.

Most recently, McCorkle stopped veteran journeyman Johnathan Ivey by second-round TKO for the Indianapolis-based Legends of Fighting promotion.

Hunt vs. McCorkle will be part of UFC 119's un-aired preliminary card.

Well Drooke its Indianapolis. I didn't see Dana trying to set up a major title fight for a mid-market area.  Even thinking they may put Cain vs Brock on the card was a big suprise to me.  With no Brock on the card we are just a  filler card in between the big PPVs.   At this point the show is the loss of one decent name fighter from seriously being considered for Live on Spike status.  If the show goes over well though the UFC may try to stage a future card here with a few more big fights.

Exactly, this is the type of card I expected from the UFC.  Not too excited, but I will still attend.
