JEFFERSONVILLE ? Ten wrestlers from the Clark-Floyd area competed for Indiana State Wrestling Association-sanctioned Team Indiana in the Folkstyle Nationals meet last month at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Those wrestlers were Jeffersonville?s Alonzo Shepherd (112-pound cadet division), Michael Vazquez (130 cadet), Brandon Brown (215 cadet), Jacob Everett (160 junior) and Jordan Hammel (171 junior), New Albany?s Tre Marler (125 cadet), Floyd Central?s Zach Thomas (119 cadet), George Emily (135 cadet) and Chase Herron (140 cadet) and New Washington?s Brady Meenach (125 cadet).

The 10 grapplers faced some of the best competition in the United States during the two-day meet. Even though not one Clark-Floyd wrestler earned All-America status, Team Indiana had eight All-American wrestlers and one national champion. The top eight wrestlers in each division earned All-America honors.

Several of the Clark-Floyd grapplers went deep into last season?s IHSAA state tournament. Shepherd qualified for the IHSAA State Finals in February, while Marler, Thomas and Meenach each reached the Evansville Reitz Semistate.

Along with wrestling for the team, Shepherd was a coach for Team Indiana. Also helping coach the team was Floyd Central head coach Brandon Sisson and Jeff head coach Danny Struck along with Vince Schroeder from Southwestern.
