Bobby Lashley Vs. Bob Sapp

Former World Wrestling Entertainment star and up-and-coming mixed-martial-arts heavyweight fighter Bobby Lashley (2-0) will fight former NFL lineman and kickboxer Bob Sapp (10-3-1) on June 27.

Lashley, an American Top Team fighter, announced the super-heavyweight fight with a Monday Twitter posting.

Lashley, who defeated Joshua Franklin and Jason Guida in his first two pro bouts, will now take on a competitor who will surely sell some tickets but likely to do little to help him mover up the MMA ladder.

The fight takes place at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., for an upstart (and currently unnamed) MMA promotion.

While a victory over Sapp will likely do little to help Lashley's reputation in the industry, the K-1 kickboxer does present a legitimate challenge based on his size alone. The approximately 350-pound Sapp will likely outweigh Lashley by 100 pounds on fight night, and his 6-foot-5 frame should give him a reach advantage.

However, given Lashely's wrestling credentials (he's a two-time NAIA national collegiate wrestling champion), Sapp could be in serious trouble if the fight goes to the ground.

Sapp is 5-1 in his past six MMA fights. He last competed at the Dec. 31 K-1 Dynamite!! show in Japan, where he defeated Akihito Tanaka (who was dressed as a cartoon character) with a first-round TKO.

I would like to know who is managing Lashley..............Jason Guida..........now Sapp...........

I think it to be a smart ploy by Lashley's people.

This is exactly what they did with Kimbo, Let him fight guys who are nobodys, but have big names or are washed up. That way, when people hear that they have beaten some legit guys, even if they were only legit 10 years ago, it goes a lot farther than hearing they beat 10 people no one ever heard of.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Lashley fight Kimo or one of the Shamrocks in the next few fights!

The guy that Lashley just fought could have at least took acting lessons if they were going to have him play that role. Pretty sad to set a fight up like that!

Sapp just tapped in about a minute to Minowa. Lashley has a real grappling back ground. Now I get to watch Jose Canseco and Ho Man Choi

Joe Warren shocks the mma world with a decision over Kid Yamamoto. Wow, that brings his record to 2-0.

Dang it, you ruined it for me! I stopped after that match was coming up. Thats 2 wins over 2 very good opponents.

What!!!!  I've got to see this one.  He hust have got in some good shots and held his ground against one tough fighter in Kid.  Yamamoto was off for awhile but I would suspect anyone that can get a win over his automatically gets instant MMA credibility.

Pre-event buildup begins for Saturday's "Ultimate Chaos," Lashley vs. Sapp headliner

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jun 22, 2009 at 10:45 am ET

Organizers for Saturday's "Ultimate Chaos" event have begun the promotional push for the show and the night's main event of former WWE star Bobby Lashley vs. former NFL player Bob Sapp.

Prize Fight MMA and Fight Force International, the event's promoters, have released a pre-event video, which is available to the right.

The video focuses on Lashley, also a decorated amateur wrestler, and Sapp, a K-1 kickboxer, as well as the co-main event of Gilbert Yvel vs. Pedro Rizzo.

The winner of the Yvel vs. Rizzo heavyweight fight is expected to replace Tim Sylvia and meet Paul Buentello at "Affliction: Trilogy" on Aug. 1.

That's not the only bout with Affliction ties, though. Affliction Entertainment Vice President Tom Atencio moves from the front office to the cage and fights Randy Hedderick on the card. Additionally, former IFL star and Affliction fighter Chris Horodecki takes on William Sriyapai, and Affliction vet Brett Cooper meets Waachiim Spiritwold.

Notables such as UFC vet Din Thomas and "The Ultimate Fighter 3" cast member Danny Abbadi are also on the card, which takes place at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.

The card has been heavily promoted in recent weeks. But that's pretty much a necessity. The event comes with a $29.95 pay-per-view price tag. While the UFC draws more than a half-million pay-per-view buys nearly every month, it's the only MMA organization that's found consistent PPV success in the U.S. Affliction also has had some marginal success (but only twice in the past 12 months), but others, such as the one-off YAMMA Pit Fighting, have flopped with the PPV model.

Sapp is a huge man but becuase of that he has the gas tank of a 89 year old chair smoker.  If Lashley can just dodge a few combinations early he shouldn't have much trouble beating Sapp who will be completely exhausted (if the fight tempo is high) by the second round.

It should be interesting to see how Pedro Rizzo will preform at this point being he has only fought once in the last 2 year and that was a lost to Josh Barnett.  Yvel is not a top level fighter but he is also not a slouch (or stranger to tattoo shops).

The US really has room for two major MMA productions if they want to be sucessful PPV wise.  UFC has the market cornered and weekly TV exposure is a huge part of their PPV promotion.  The rest of the organizations are just spinning their wheels with little hype for their PPV fight becuase little is known about most of the fighter before hand.  A regular guy is not going to laying down PPV money if they don't feel a connection to what will happen.  If the other organizations want to remain split they have to at least work together to compete with UFC.  If the other big organizations pool their resources and made a joint MMA weekly wrap up type show on regular cable they could get the main stream exposure they need.  In the show they could features each organizaitons best fights, interview top fighters, and highlight upcoming events.  Then each organization could take turns having PPV cards and/or have a few combined PPV cards to make the PPV money.  Right now all the other fighters are losing, money, exposure, and time by being so spread out and not getting enough big fights.  These fighters will eventually get past their prime before they reach the good money in the sport.  At this point the organizations are just flushing to much money trying to compete with the UFC but not utalizing what they need to in order to even give a good effort at it.  At least Affliction has HBO to help a little.  Eventually most of these organizations realize they can't hold an audiance and folding once the cash flow is taped out (pun intended).

Thanks for the streaming heads up B.  I found it right before the main event started.  It didn't take long for Lashley to get another win.  Seems like he's making a dedicated at MMA.
