He was even better his junior and senior years. Payne, a 140-pound wrestler for Michigan City, went 59-12 in his final two years with the Wolves, including a pair of sectional championships, a regional championship and a pair of trips to the semi-state ticket round. Payne finished with 117 career victories. That is believed to be the most in school history since the consolidation.
