  4. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday the winner of this week's Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor. Indiana sophomore Luke Blanton (149) picked up his first career weekly award. Blanton had one of the best weekends of his young Indiana career. On December 11, at 20th-ranked Minnesota, Blanton came from behind to upset No. 10 Jake Short in the penultimate bout of the dual. Blanton was behind 6-4 after two periods, then surged ahead with an 11-4 third round in his favor. Blanton sealed the win with a clutch takedown and a two-point nearfall on the edge of the mat with 30 seconds remaining. The win also lifted Indiana to a 19-18 team win over Minnesota, their first Big Ten dual win since 2011. On Sunday, December 13, the Hoosiers took on Eastern Michigan, a team on the brink of cracking the national top 25. Indiana battled to a hard-earned 25-9 win over the Eagles, highlighted by Blanton's win over No. 16 Nicholas Barber in the 149 lbs. bout. Blanton took the dual win on a 4-0 decision, in which the Hoosier displayed excellent defensive work. With this award, Blanton becomes the first Hoosier this season to win the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor. He's the first Hoosier to win the award since NCAA runner-up Taylor Walsh (December 31, 2014). The pair of wins garnered national recognition for Blanton. He rose to the No. 20 spot in the latest Asics FloRankings, and sits at 29th in the latest Dual Impact Index polls. After a strong 3-0 weekend, Indiana earned their first national rankings of the season. The Hoosiers are 20th in the latest InterMat team dual rankings, and 22nd in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll.   7. KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC) won a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on the first day of the highly- respected Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix. In the finals, Howe lost to Ahmed Gadzhimagomedov of Russia in the finals, 2-2. The Russian led 2-0, when Howe scored twice in the final minute. The Russian won the tie-breaker by having the highest value scoring move, a two-pointer. Gadzhimagomedov has previously won gold medals at the Ramzan Kadirov Cup, the Moscow Lights and the Intercontinental Cup tournaments in Russia, as well as the Copa Brazil and the Ukrainian Memorial International. Howe scored a 5-2 win over Boris Makoev of Russia in the semifinals. Makoev was second at the 2013 Dave Schultz Memorial in the USA Howe was an NCAA champion and four-time All-American, competing first for Wisconsin and then for Oklahoma. He was second in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He was attempting to become the 11th American men’s freestyle wrestler to win this event, considered one of the toughest in the world each year. The last American men’s freestyler to win was Steve Mocco, the heavyweight champion in 2009. Five U.S. women have won this event, but Team USA did not have any women entries this year. Eliminated were the two U.S. entries at 57 kg/125 lbs., 2014 U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) and Matt McDonough (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC). For nine of them, this was their first action of the season. Indiana finished the day with four wrestlers on the podium. In his first bout of the day, redshirt senior Taylor Walsh earned a pin in 1:42 to become the all-time leader in career pins at Indiana with 48. He followed up his record setting pin with three more in as many matches to advance to the championship. Although he did not earn a fifth fall on the day, Walsh defeated England of Missouri 16-4 in a major decision. Walsh is now 5-0 on the season with a career pin total of 51. Redshirt Sophomore Nate Jackson came close to giving Indiana two Harold Nichols champs, when he was defeated in a 5-3 decision in the championship bout. Jackson ended his day and the first event of the season 4-1. Senior Luke Sheridan went 4-2 for the tournament to obtain a fourth place finish. He added three pins to bring his career total to 24, his last of which was in 21 seconds. Fellow wrestler redshirt shopomore Matt Irickhad a similar day, also finsihing fourth and had a record of 5-2. Irick completed his day with two pins. On the day, there were four other Hoosiers who finished with multiple wins. Sophomore Sean Brown (141) won back-to-back bouts after dropping his first to end 2-2. Also winning two bouts was sophomore Luke Blanton (157), who earned a fall early in the day, with a second period pin of Iowa Western's Gray. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Moody (149) won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals where he was defeated in a major decision. Moody wrapped-up the open at 3-2. Redshirt junior Garret Goldman (HWT) lost his first match-up of the day, but won three consecutive bouts by decision (7-3, 2-0, 2-0) in the consolation bracket to finish 3-2. There were two divisions in each of the weight classes, Open and Freshman/Sophomore.
