  1. Nick Lee fought back and took the lead late in the 3rd periodto get the 7-6 victory over OSU #2 Joey McKenna a bit ago. Same score as when they met last year when Joey won. Nice win over the reigning Big 10 champ.
  2. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday the winner of this week's Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor. Indiana sophomore Luke Blanton (149) picked up his first career weekly award. Blanton had one of the best weekends of his young Indiana career. On December 11, at 20th-ranked Minnesota, Blanton came from behind to upset No. 10 Jake Short in the penultimate bout of the dual. Blanton was behind 6-4 after two periods, then surged ahead with an 11-4 third round in his favor. Blanton sealed the win with a clutch takedown and a two-point nearfall on the edge of the mat with 30 seconds remaining. The win also lifted Indiana to a 19-18 team win over Minnesota, their first Big Ten dual win since 2011. On Sunday, December 13, the Hoosiers took on Eastern Michigan, a team on the brink of cracking the national top 25. Indiana battled to a hard-earned 25-9 win over the Eagles, highlighted by Blanton's win over No. 16 Nicholas Barber in the 149 lbs. bout. Blanton took the dual win on a 4-0 decision, in which the Hoosier displayed excellent defensive work. With this award, Blanton becomes the first Hoosier this season to win the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor. He's the first Hoosier to win the award since NCAA runner-up Taylor Walsh (December 31, 2014). The pair of wins garnered national recognition for Blanton. He rose to the No. 20 spot in the latest Asics FloRankings, and sits at 29th in the latest Dual Impact Index polls. After a strong 3-0 weekend, Indiana earned their first national rankings of the season. The Hoosiers are 20th in the latest InterMat team dual rankings, and 22nd in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll.   4. Photo Gallery WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Nine weights were contested as the Purdue wrestling team held its Gold & Black Matches Saturday in Holloway Gymnasium. Nick Lawrence and Jacob Morrissey notched bonus point victories and four other matches were decided by less than two points. Lawrence took redshirt freshman Cody Pae down four times and tallied a pair of three-point nearfalls en route to a 16-3 major decision at 141 pounds. The redshirt senior added 2:32 worth of riding time in the match. Morrissey, a redshirt freshman, pinned true freshman Blake Reid in 2:59. The Oconto Falls, Wis., native, wasted no time getting after Reid, taking him down early in the first period. He remained in control and got both of Reid's shoulders on the mat with one tick on the clock in the opening stanza. The Gold & Black Matches began with back-to-back 3-1 bouts at 125 and 133 pounds. A second period reversal and 1:38 worth of riding time lifted redshirt freshman Aaron Assadpast true freshman Ben Thornton at 125. In a highly anticipated matchup at 133, it was redshirt junior Danny Sabatello's quick strike in the first period combined with 2:40 riding time that led to the decision over redshirt sophomore Kyle Ayersman. Redshirt sophomore Alex Griffin edged redshirt senior Brandon Nelsen, 3-2, in a battle at 149 pounds. The first three minutes of action were scoreless, but that wasn't the case in the second period. Opting to start from bottom, Griffin got on the board with an escape and followed with a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Nelsen escaped to make it 3-1 as the period came a close. Starting the final period from bottom, Nelsen escaped from Griffin for the final point in the match. After spending last season at 174, redshirt senior Patrick Kissel has made the move to 184, where he took on last year's 184-pound starter, redshirt sophomore Tanner Lynde. Kissel notched a first period takedown and added an escape after starting the second period from bottom. Lynde got a takedown of his at the beginning of the third period after choosing a neutral start. He was unable to keep Kissel down for a 4-2 final. The Boilermakers open their season at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Nov. 14. The dual will start at 10 p.m. ET. There were two divisions in each of the weight classes, Open and Freshman/Sophomore. Redshirt sophomoresJonathan Edwards (141), Trevor Moody (149), Gideon Van Hook (149) and redshirt junior Joe Randazzo (149) competed in the Open division. In the Freshman/Sophomore, sophomores Sean Brown (141), Luke Blanton(157) and Jake Masengale (184), along with freshmen Jake Danishek (157), Bryce Martin (165), Samuel Thomas (165), Brandon Joest (197), Fletcher Miller (HWT) and Gavan Jolley-Little (HWT) all made appearances. The 157-pound Freshman/Sophomore weight class saw two Hoosiers place in the top five. Luke Blantonfinished with a 4-1 record, winning the consolation match for a third place finish. Jake Danishek, lost after winning his first two bouts, but Danishek, winning three straight, wrestled back for fifth place. Fellow freshman, Bryce Martin had a similar day to Danishek, wrestling back for fifth in the Freshman/Sophomore 165-pound class. After coming out on top in his first two bouts, Jake Masengale lost his final two, yet still finished in fourth. Fletcher Miller was a MSU Open champion, going 4-0. He won his first match with a 15-2 major decision to advance to the quarter-finals where he won in a close 8-7 bout. In the semis, Miller won again with an 11-2 major decision. In the finals, Miller won handily, 6-1, against Logan Rimmer of Notre Dame College to claim first. The Hoosiers will compete in the Harold Nichols Open on November 8, 2014 in Ames, Iowa.

Nov. 4, 2014 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team will hold its annual Gold & Black Matches in Holloway Gymnasium Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. All 10 weights will be contested as the Boilermakers prepare for their season opener at Cal Poly on Nov. 14. The Gold & Black Matches are free and open to the public. "We're hoping a lot of fans will come out and watch our Gold & Black Matches because we are excited and we are ready," head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "I am proud of the hard work that our team has put in this fall and I am excited to see what they can accomplish during the season." Ersland had the opportunity to see his squad in action while wrestling unattached at the Michigan State Open Nov. 2. Twenty-seven grapplers competed across the Freshman/Sophomore and Open Divisions with nine individuals placing. Fans in attendance will be the first to see and take home the 2014-15 Purdue wrestling poster and have a chance to win a Boilermaker Wrestling Experience for each of the eight home duals this season. A winner and their guest will join the wrestling team for warmups and sit on the bench during the dual.
