With only six states represented, the focus should be on improving the event instead of worrying about who is on what team.

Probably when we beat them at Junior and Cadet duals, or place higher at Fargo.

If he would have gone to events like the Ironman his chances of taking a loss would increase dramatically. Guys like Nathan Tomasello and Logan Steiber both had at least one loss at the Ironman.

We need a lot more than that, there are years where Indiana doesn't take the event seriously and years Illinois doesn't. The dual is an exhibition that many kids go into it with very little mat time since state.

Most of the guys that were picked have some solid national credentials to backup their in-state success.

Torres, Vaughn, Lawrence have all placed at USAW Folkstyle Nationals
Rypel and Hughes have placed at Super 32
Those are off the top of my head, it wouldn't have been too hard to pick out the top guys based on success in the state both out of season and in-season, along with national accolades.

I believe that Lance Ellis is the about the best there could ever be but Chad Red is great and has proven it.  I think that the Lee boys will be knocking at the door for a long time. Mauer and Coughlin are right there.  In my simple, old, mind I think that in Indiana wrestling Andrew Howe is still the best.  An old friend of mine told me to watch him, when he puts a hand on you, he doesn't stop until he does something to you and when he does, it is not good.  My nephew had the pleasure of wrestling him at Freestyle State at the Fairgrounds and shot in on a double, drove him all the way across the mat. Seemed to kind of upset him and he took out his anger on my Nephew.  It wasn't pretty.  Other than Howe's only loss in his first State Finals, Andrew Howe has been a stud.      Other then Howe, I would have to put up Mike Breeden from Mooresville in 1978 but I wouldn't expect too many would remember that one.

You really don't know what a "darkhorse" is.  You also seem confused about what an "upset" is.  Nobody can really call Parris, Davison, or Lee "darkhorses" or "upsets" when about half of the predictions have them winning.  (You're mention of Sliga over Berry easily falls into the same category.)

FormerHornet got a reaction from Jon H in Should the 132lb final be last on Saturday?
I find it ironic people get offended that there is a simply a discussion about the last match of the evening therefore making it disrespectful to the other finalists and ignore the fact the vote reads, "No, I want to see Streck maul someone last."

It seems to me if you are going to be up in arms suggesting other wrestlers are disrespected or it is not a foregone conclusion that Lee and Red will make the finals then you should be offended by the assumption Streck is going to make the finals, or that he will dominate whoever he wrestles, it is disrespectful to them. That is "why we have them wrestle the matches" right?

This probably the biggest match in Indiana High School history and a prime opportunity to grow the sport. It just makes sense to make it the last match of the evening. It is just wise that the IHSAA put two of the most accomplished wrestlers in the states history as the center piece. It doesn't diminish everyone else's accomplishments in fact it might boost their exposure to the casual wrestling fans.

Never said any match was meaningless. The reason that people want this match is because it's the main event. If this was the first match you'd have about 2,000 people there for the other 13 matches.

It's about promotion of the sport and giving the fans the best match for the end. This has been a great success for the NCAAs and ESPN with having a meaningful match at the end. Last year having Logan Stieber last going for his 4th title along with a team race that could hinge on his win was great for the sport. We can do the same here in Indiana and help promote the sport, the buzz around this match is tremendous and like no other in most people's memory.

For this sport to grow we have to go outside of our comfort zones to look at ways to bring positive attention to the sport. When two nationally ranked guys lock horns we need to promote. If we'd have this as the last match of the night the buzz would grow as the night wore on. We'd get to see Streck maul someone, we'd get to see Woods vs. Parris, we'd get to see who survives at 106, etc.

We have a great opportunity to give our sport some great exposure not only in the state, but in the country. I know we are getting probably more love for our state tournament from Intermat this week than we usually do. Hmmm I wonder why...do you think nationally people care about Streck mauling someone or Red vs. Lee?

There is a reason why MMA and boxing events have their biggest fight as the last one, the same should happen in wrestling. Wanting to keep tradition, some NFHS random rule, or worrying about someone not feeling their state title match is import is ludicrous. Most the crowd will leave before Streck wrestles, there is no doubt and yet you want to imply I think 13 other matches are meaningless. I won't leave, but it seems thousands others will deem his match meaningless and SHOW it by heading to their car.

I would like to be the first one to bring this to the attention of the IHSAA, and the wrestling community as a whole.  New Castle did not have Jack's doughnuts in the hospitality room this year.  It is one thing to mess with the integrity of the wrestling that goes on there, but it is a much deeper issue to deprive the coaches of such deep fried goodness with the best thick rich icing known to man.  I would like a full investigation on this and would appreciate an explanation!  WE WANT ANSWERS!  I know I'm not alone on this hot topic issue and we did fight through and have a successful day but it took some mental toughness and teamwork from the coaching community!

Quiroga/Tshirts was a rematch, I don't remember as much hype. I was pumped, I still get on Mrs 3b for using her pregnancy to prevent me from seeing that. I missed that match and Richey/Roach. I remember sitting in Dunkin Donuts hearing the roars! And I don't think most gave Howe a chance. The hype that year was Hump/Angel.

In terms of potential, this year could be greatest ever. There's been talked about matches in past but nothing on levels of what we have an opportunity to see this weekend. 3 legit stud returning state champs w legit contenders breathing down there necks is unreal. Micic/Lee and Maurer/Dolly are only 2 that come to mind in recent memory.

SWIN, style certainly was a big factor. However, my point is that the physical development between an 18 year old and 14/15 year old is huge and was certainly a factor (even if not an obvious factor). A 17 year old Lee may have imposed his will more effectively.
