Probably should be happy they have any sort of separation criteria and regular brackets.  Back in the day it was straight luck of the draw and in verticals brackets where if you lost round 1 you were paired with a winner from round 1 in order to help decrease the field quicker.   Under that system, after placing high in 56 man cadet bracket the year prior, my first year of juniors I drew the previous years ISWA junior state champ and followed that up with the IHSAA 3rd place finisher.  Needless to say that was a very quick weekend for me.

I have worked the scales a few times at ISWA state. Nothing like arguing with a parent that states that their club coach would always allow them to wrestle a weight class as long as the wrestler wasn’t over the following weight classes. That was more so in the old fax or email your clubs weights days.

Not everyone has the same support system. My family did not have the means or time to transport me for hours on weeknights and none of my teammates were doing that. I had to work year round junior and senior year to afford a car. Having these things local to you makes a huge difference.

Couple things to address about the announcers.

First, the Bally(formerly Fox) broadcast Greg Rakeshaw does wrestling once a year. Knowing the collegiate wrestling scene is not in his wheelhouse. Obviously someone with knowledge corrected him with the Missouri thing. While the coverage is not the Big Ten student produced event, it is not an ESPN event either. They do a great job with the production and let the wrestling people do their jobs, which is what they should. Blake and coach Goebel do awesome for people who do it once a year. The others are fillers and know just enough to keep things going. I'm sure the other state finals events have just as many mistakes.

The matside announcers are not professionals at all. Having someone talking is way better than not having someone there or listening to what the table workers ate for breakfast. It's a long day sitting there, talking to yourself and trying to stay engaged. As with any of us, there will be mistakes made and since they are not professionals they will say things we don't agree with. If you are picking out a few things here and there out of 10 hours of sitting on the mic, I think they are doing great. Do you always agree with what a commentator says on an NFL or NBA broadcast, NO. It shouldn't be any different now.

If you want professionals on the call you will need to pay the money to have them there. I'm sure Flo would send a whole crew for the right price or you might be able to clone Mike, which might be cheaper...but scarier.

We didn’t open till about July so we didn’t get a ton of big kids since they were in football. 2 of them have walked though the doors and been part of something. One of those 2 was at everything until about IHPO. Then focused on the live nights. We had more lighter wrestlers that came and put some work in. Excited for tonight.  I do want to be clear here though. I would never say a wrestler has a certain level of success because they trained with us. It's just cool to see kids that you see work hard and you start to get to know.

I want to first say thank you to @blueandgold for starting this thread.  I was not sure who you were but have been informed and I have huge amounts of respect for you young man so again thank you for the kind words about Logan.

To everyone else who has commented on here thank you also so very much.  I have been around wrestling for many many years as an athlete, coach, ISWA board member & parent.  I have gotten to know lots and lots of kids and families from all over the state thru the many many years
Thru all the years I have known this is a great sport that can have heartbreaking endings and results and equally great un-believable outcomes and accomplishments.

Logan has had a great career in the sport and has achieved things greater than I would have and could have expected for him.  The thing that makes me the happiest of all after everything he has gone thru (especially over the last two years) is how he carried himself after it all came to an end on Saturday.   Mom and I were completely devastated and honestly I could not think or rationalize what to do next, but seeing Logan stand up shake hands and then come back out and sit with his team was un-believable to me.  I talked to him a few times during the rest of the day and while I was teary he assured me he was OK and he was going to be fine just a little disappointed.

Now to address all the above comments (like I said I have made many friends along the way during my time in the sport) and I thank all of you for your kind words.  Most of you I do not know personally but please seek me out at some point at any ISWA event so I can fist bump you and thank you personally for acknowledging what I know already is that Logan is an awesome & kind young man.

To @Darrick Snyder @mikemorgan what a wild ride its been over 4 years from a state title to a heartbreaking loss and everything in between (thanks to Mike for coming in to help navigate this last run).  You guys have been awesome and amazing and I know I will be friends with you guys forever and love you both.  Thank you for everything.

Lastly to @tiger92 thank you for post and to be honest it does not surprise me that Logan found your son on social media some how and reached out to him to congratulate him and wish him good luck going forward.
Unfortunately for me I selected seats in the part of the arena that I had sat in the previous times I had been fortunate enough for Logan to be at Semi-state and did not want to break from tradition even though they were not in the "B-burg section".  This turned out to be right next to the Princeton fan section.  It was tough to be honest, but I did get to see what I think was mom and dad happy and elated for their son Jared Dunn thru the whole day.  To me that is what this sport is all about, as I was devastated they were elated and I honestly could not be mad about that.   I hope your son enjoys this experience and has the time of his life.  Its a great event being at the state finals and I know he will soak it all in and have great life experiences and take a ways.  I hope he makes a deep run and can achieve all he wants and dreams about.

To all other kids competing this weekend best of luck, stay safe & healthy and accomplish your dreams and enjoy the moments, soak it all in and never have regrets.

I’ll just add this to show his character.  When we got in the back tunnel, we hugged.  Told him I loved him and was sorry it ended that way.  His response: “Coach, I’m really sorry.  I know the team needed my points today and next weekend”.   Was tough for me to hold it together to be honest.

I posted this back in 2017 but always good to remember this so I thought I would re-post.

For parents with seniors advancing today or falling short of their goals there is one message that needs to be said...and that is "we are proud of you". These kids put their heart and soul into what they do and it's easy as a parent to lose sight of this sometimes. Be a fan and their biggest supporter and that's all we can do. It's a sport. It's a freaking blast and it will eventually come to an end...win or lose. To all that advanced and kept their goals alive all the best and bring home the prize but let's not lose sight of the journey to State. They are all winners.

It’s been a pleasure as a fan to watch you. I want to thank you for what you’ve contributed to Indiana wrestling and want to remind you that you are still a champion day in and day out regardless of how this season may have ended for you. You’ve got some of the greatest coaches in your corner who I know do a great job in not only making great wrestlers, but helping mold fine young men for society to have. So, I know without a doubt you’ll be one of those people we see down the line doing great things in life. I wish you the best and absolute good fortune in your next steps.

How about Ashton Jackson making a statement last year, and beating #1 at the time Jeffrey Bailey 8-2, and winning a state title the next weekend? I don't think most people at the time even thought him as a title contender before that.

Jordan Vaughn, Franklin Central (2015): Placed third in the regional but caught fire at New Castle beating Jack Chastain along the way and went on the next weekend running all the way to the finals where he was finally stopped by Nick Lee.

Reed Egli, Evansville Mater Dei (2021): Pinned his way through a tough 113 weight class last year and was ranked #11 in the state (maybe even lower), but unfortunately drew Alex Cottey Friday morning at Bankers in what could’ve been a finals match had Alex not had to default to 4th place the prior weekend.

I really don't care who I piss off with this post. Having watched and followed wrestling for over 10 years, I always was impressed by the fact that even though teams are rivals the fans were very classy compared to other sports. In our area fans have always supported each other even though they want to beat each other. When times are tough such as an injury to a wrestler or for a wrestlers family or school the support is there. You traditionally don't hear fans boo a high school wrestler. But I guess times have changed and it's acceptable to chant that a high school wrestler is overrated from opposing parents. Sometimes you have no idea what that young person may be going through and they weren't quite up to par that day. Or yes they might not have been good enough to win a match. Pretty pathetic example for parents to set for kids. I'm quite sure that no one likes to be treated that way. Call me old fashioned, but I personally don't think that anyone deserves to be treated that way.
