Did we choke? Yea, we certainly could have been a lot better today, but I also think Terre Haute South was a heck of a lot better than an 8 seed and we were over seeded. We still didn’t wrestle up to our seed though. Look where they finished and look where we finished. Does seeding change brackets and where we finish, probably not with how we wrestled today. THS is tough and have a heck of a program. Their guys came to wrestle and beat us up first round, no doubt.

We weren’t ready to wrestle and it showed, but that’s why this tournament is great for all these teams, it’s tough and shows many teams deserve the recognition of their hard work. You have an #8 seed knock off a #1 and a last minute voted in #4 Columbus East battle through and make it to the finals against a solid #2 Mishawaka.

No excuses, we have to do better, if we want to win a team title.  Hats off to THS for knocking us off, Columbus East for showing they deserved to be there with the vote in with a runner up finish and to Mishawaka for taking home the title.

The doors is open if you want to come help coach these guys up. I know I can always improve as a coach and could use some more knowledge.

    If 8 over 1 upsets weren’t possible, we wouldn’t invite 8 teams.

Congrats to Roncalli on a fifth place showing. I would have loved to have that, as they took it to us Brickies in the place match.

Well, we have outliers in the rural communities. Western. Delta. Belmont. Etc. The Shepards, Bumgardners, Mendenhalls, Jarretts, etc are Indiana wrestling icons.

Shepards might be the only other family outside of the McGinleys with more Indiana heritage. These kids make Indiana wrestling the greatest. Chad Shepard is kind of a big deal as Western's coach. One of the sickest cradles in Indiana wrestling history. Used it to his advantage in 1990-1991ish...

I would say the ticket round is a major accomplishment. There are times a wrestler can slip through to semi-state with the right weight class and draws. But winning that first round at semi-state I think shows you can compete at that level. Back in the day when you took only 3 from Regionals I think it was more of an accomplishment. You need to win more than one match at Regionals.

But yes I would agree it would depend on the kid and what is an accomplishment for them. I have coached some kids that making it to semi-state alone was absolutely huge growth for them. So in the end to each its own.

In my opinion, and maybe only mine, it's a significant accomplishment. I don't think it would be surprising that many members on this board are skewed to the right of the accomplishment curve. Why wouldn't they lean towards the Semi-State as a minor accomplishment. But, how many thousands of kids over the years have worked their fannies off, had successful careers, and not qualified for State?

My son is the JV kid from Owen Valley you mentioned. His name is Kacey Orman. It is amazing to see him being recognized for his hard work and determination. He has never let his disability get in the way of whatever he wants to do. He always finds a way!

    All,

I want to share a story about the kind of people we have in this sport.  Last Saturday Greenfield had a young lady injured in a match at New Palestine High School.  It was a head and neck injury that required her to be transported to the hospital via ambulance.  She and her parents had never been through something like this before and were justifiably shaken.

On Tuesday of this week I was called down to the athletic office.  We had received a package.  It was a box of flowers addressed to the young lady who was injured.  They were sent from the Columbia City Wrestling Program.  I know it's a little thing and some people may not understand, but it touched me and my program.

People think wrestling is about working hard, sweating, bleeding, beating on people, etc..., but it's not.  It's above LOVING each other.  I wan't to thank Columbia City for giving my program an example of how people are supposed to love each other.

    Thank you!

Dwilly reacted to TysonNisley in Jesse Mendez at 133, how does he stack up?!?
No shot, Byrd is really tough and is definitely more proven than Mendez. I wouldn't count Mendez out, especially since he has a win over Chris Cannon who is also a 133 AA, but Mendez won't bonus a guy of this caliber. 1 or 2 point difference I'm predicting. And that's if Ragusin doesn't stop Mendez first.

Wish I would've done Greco in high school. I had my first experiences with Greco this summer wrestling with the Ukrainian Olympic Team. A lot of people look at the cool throws and completely overlook the emphasis on positioning, handfighting, footwork, and plenty of other skills that are extremely translatable to the other two styles. I think the issue is that kids are afraid to lose in high school. I know that's the reason I didn't do it in high school. Many wrestlers don't wrestle upper body a lot and as a result, they don't feel comfortable and don't want to lose to wrestlers that they would otherwise beat. I really advocate for more high school wrestlers to give Greco an honest try though as it's helped me a lot with my folkstyle wrestling.

Congratulations to the 2022 IHSWCA Academic Challenge place winners. This is our second year for the program. This year's top three were:

    1st) DeKalb High School--Team GPA 3.569

    2nd) Roncalli High School  3.539

    3rd) Carmel High School    3.501

These Sectional champion teams distinguished themselves in the classroom as well as on the mat. The link at the bottom is the article that ran in the local paper about DeKalb's team.  The IHSWCA is very proud of all of these teams. They were all athletically successful while also placing emphasis on the student aspect of student/athlete. This year all Sectional champs with a team GPA of 3.25 or higher who were not in the top three will receive a digital Honorable Mention certificate.

One of the best arguments for totally abolishing the travel rule is that it should be a school level decision. Just schools will approve show choir, band, FFA, etc trips all over the country, some feel athletic travel should be determined by the school.

I think that they will start off redshirt… once Jesse starts to do Jesse things they will pull it.

Why aren't they getting paid? Track shows 2,000 registered...times $50 per wrestler...$100,000...plus spectators paying $20 per person...And the people organizing  the tournament don't get paid?

Fair enough & that would also make sense in this instance. I know it's hard to do that many weight classes, and age diviions for the ISWA.

Dwilly reacted to Justin Ratliff in ISWA Seperation Criteria
Separation Criteria is just that.  It's designed to "separate" top 4 placers so they don't see each other in the first round.  That could look different from bracket to bracket depending how many top 4 placers there are.  They have someone on Friday night that goes through every bracket to verify the top four placement in the style being wrestled.  There are a lot of people that claim separation criteria who don't have it.  Once the brackets are made the program in track separates the wrestlers in the bracket.

The ISWA is working with track to have a weighted ranking system for ISWA state events that take several types of tournaments in consideration with one of them being IHSAA State.  Now this will be done with a program so it probably won't be perfect either.

As MattM stated above, "Probably should be happy they have any sort of separation criteria and regular brackets.  Back in the day it was straight luck of the draw and in verticals brackets where if you lost round 1 you were paired with a winner from round 1 in order to help decrease the field quicker."

The ISWA is wanting pairing officials so please sign up and make it better.  Set up mats, run wifi, take incessant phone calls with people bitching, get yelled at all day by people who have no clue how to run a tournament, get less sleep than anyone in the building, no breaks, and no pay all for the love of the wrestling community. Come get ya some! lol

Ok but was told today that they don’t see any Criteria any different. A 1 is the same as a 4 . In a Cadet bracket they had two Returning  State champs and both put on the same side with the 2 on opposite side.
