I can't believe all these parents who grew up in the tougher times have produced such wimpy kids.

So good to see that Parker Reynolds is making a strong recovery after a medical condition almost sidelined his athletic career. Really respect the dedication and mental resolve he's shown to get back to a point where he can hope to fulfill some of his dreams. (And kudos to CRed helping him get there...)

Happy IHSAA 1st day of wrestling!

Speaking of Robert Miller, he started his career in the Cathedral room as a freshman. He struggled to get his weight off to make the team as a freshman at 135. Robert was the last of the one of the nastiest rooms in the state in that era, the Christian Park room, on the near-east side of Indy.

That room produced 9 state champs (that I can count) and prob another 15 medalists in the late 80s and early 90s: Lance Ellis (4), Jason Terry (2), Puckett, Rob Walke, Robert Miller were the champs. Medalists included Billy Terry 2x, Scotty Ellis, Sean McGinley 2x, Dan Ireland, Todd Mackall, Eric Guhl and many more. One of the nastiest groups of lads I've ever met. The room was run by Grandpa John Sherrill. One of the greatest patriarchs in Indy wrestling history. Grandpa John: Overalls and Kodiak spitting on the side of the mat and the most vile motivation that I can never forget.

And, Rob Miller is one of a kind. Hope he's well. Had some battles in the room with him in the ol' days.

After final approval from our athletic department to open up gym space.

Chatard is committed to hosting 2A Wildcard weekend on 12/9.

We are putting together a 6-way tournament and hoping to pull as many of the teams that are in the hunt for the last 2 spots as possible.

    I have sent invites to:
    Garrett
    Rensselaer Central ❌
    Peru ✅
    Angola ✅
    Glenn❌
    South Ridge
    Owen Valley ✅
    Monrovia ❌
    Bishop Dwenger ❌
    Norwell
    Oak Hill ❌

My hope is to make the voting committee's job a little easier come the 3rd week of December.
Obviously, this will require shifts in some schedules but we are trying to help schools build the best possible case. (And put together a strong case for our guys)

If teams are unable to attend I will open it up to other teams on the list.

For me, I have always started by focusing on hips. In my opinion, he who has the best hips and can use them… wins.

You need your hips to throw with grand amplitude, defend shots, finish shots, turns on top, preventing turns on bottom, knee taps, cart wheel over the top from neutral and on bottom…. Etc… etc… etc…

Obviously, there is more to it than just hips BUT this is where I start and IMO, if your kids can develop the use of their hips the rest will fall into place.

For freestyle something I like putting into new wrestlers ear is finishing shots cleanly and not getting stuck underneath on their shots. Another thing is transitioning from takedowns to turns (after you show a lace and gut), obviously turns are different in freestyle but I think the mindset is the same (which is to keep scoring points.) IMO Indiana could always could get better at par terre as well.

Shout out to my friend Dustin Bentz, aka TripleB!!  Dude had a real scare last year, lost about 100 lbs and then decided to step up to the plate and compete at Folk State this year.  Still got it!  Matter of fact, props to all the dudes in this pic and all the masters division wrestlers still willing to go out and throw down! 👏👏👏.  Dustin, Sam’s has the 5 gal pale of flex-all on sale… haha.

    Hey everyone.

I made an announcement on Facebook but wanted to share here as well because I want a great coach to come take this over.

Yesterday I resigned as the Head Wrestling Coach at Cascade High School.

To many this will come as a shock and it has absolutely nothing to do with Cascade or the state of the program as both of those are in amazing shape.

I had to make a decision for myself and do what was best for me professionally to pursue other opportunities.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me the past 2 seasons!!

I can promise you will see me in a corner next season I just don’t know what colors I will be wearing!

Anyone interested in the job at Cascade please reach out I would love to get you in contact with the right people!

I have a really good friend in media. In his spare time he does PA for major sports for a D1 university.  He accompanied me to the IHSAA State Finals many years ago & we had press passes.  While taking everything in early Saturday he said "this guy on the mic is really da** good!". After we capped off the final that night he couldn't stop talking about how good the announcer was, and he still makes comments about this 30 years later.  Legend.

Thank you for everything that you have done for the sport, Mr. Whitehead! I do not think the IHSAA State Tournament will ever be the same without you on the mic.

On Facebook Kevin made it official that this state finals will be his last on the mic. Crazy to think an announcer has made such an impact on this sport, but he has literally become the voice of the sport. Thanks Kevin for being the voice of Indiana wrestling for 40+ years!
