  1. I would certainly bet some Saturday state finals intermission beers there was not a weight allowance between those years. After cutting weight for 4 years of varsity wrestling, trust me...you know exactly what you had to weigh. Whatever allowance you had in 84-85, it did not carry over to the years I speak of.
  2. I can assure you there was NOT a growth allowance between 1989-1993.
  3. What's funny is I had just won my ticket round match a mat over & started to celebrate to my self when I noticed the match next to me had all the attention. I was thinking. "well it's time to get ready for Aaron Wilson"...nope...change of plans. The Ft Wayne Coliseum went nuts. Aaron Wilson was a HUGE 119 lber. Like I said though, it's not like Ester wasn't expected to compete. He was really good as well.
  4. In 1992 Mike Ester(Fort Wayne Snider) beat Aaron Wilson (Warsaw) in the ticket round. Not that big of an upset seeing that both were quality wrestlers & previous state placers, but Wilson was 44-0 I believe I a previous state runner-up. I believe Ester lost in Regional final to Tony Elkins(Ft Wayne Northside) to make this ticket round match happen. There are so many of these ticket round matchups though. This is 1 of a 100 I bet if we looked throughout tourney history. Dan Jankowski was a defending state champ from Mater Dai, and was beat in the ticket round by Rosbottom (Jeffersonville) in the late 90's I believe.
  5. I believe Andrew King at Oak Hill High School has over 300, and he is nowhere on this list.
  6. Also worth mentioning is that he can do this because of tremendous flexibility. If you cannot do the splits, you better keep your hips up.
  7. Thanks for that info, and I did read that. That 5% is the percentage of applicants that were accepted. Now how many go to college, but cannot even waste their time to apply to Harvard? Those low percentages, and combined with the low percentage of beings a D1 wrestler make the odds very low. Someone who could speak to this experience is JT Young from Bloomington South. I believe he went to Harvard starting in 2001. I guarantee that degree stands out more than his 2 state championships, and D1 wrestling experience.
  8. Hah! That's a great question, and I am sure I could spend some time to figure the exact odds. That said, Harvard actually does not award athletic scholarships. I don't believe any Ivy League school does. They offer academic scholarships based on need, which is really a way to mask it being an athletic scholarship. The answer to your question though is going to be very low odds. Way less than 1% Whatever decisions these kids make, I wish them the best of luck and fortune for their futures. Like meluvwrestling stated, for most unless you are coaching(which I applaud) wrestling accomplishments mean little after college.
  9. I also hire people, and also am somewhat of a statistics/odds junky. Sportsfangms is on the money. There are more billionaires, millionaires, CEOs, etc. that come out of Harvard than any other school. The networking alone weighs heavily against any non Ivy League school. I applaud anyone for getting their degree; however, the opportunity to attend an Ivy League school, especially Harvard is special in my opinion.
  10. Friday night match 1999 I believe. Eric Keith Portage ranked #1 44-0 is losing bad to Cassidy Wilson - Oak Hill ranked #4, then gets spladled & pinned in the second period I think.
  11. What is crazy is Pease never won a state championship. Without question best to never win IMO.
  12. So there goes your opinion. For clarification I said, "It cannot be said any better". Best post ever...not even close to what I said. Way to get your point across. I personally don't care if my son ever reaches that level of wrestling success(i am more worried about academic success), but if he does I would hope he would lose with humility. The same way when he beats a kid & you hear the parent of the other kid say, "you just gave that match to him". Yeah, what we did had nothing to do with your son losing losing...ok. We have all heard & seen it. Don't be that guy, and don't be the guy that pouts publicly when you lose in the finals of Big Tens. He flat out got outwrestled...end of story. I have nothing but respect for that kid as a wrestler, but I wish he would have handled that loss better.
  13. Yes, you should be upset. I am not going to get on here & tell someone how to parent, but if my son did that I would most likely force a break from tournament wrestling. I certainly would not tolerate it from a kid I coach. That said, I unfortunately am waiting for my son to pin multiple people in the same day. When he gets his tail kicked & tries to throw a fit it is short-lived. We dont allow it. Just go into your place of work & verbally pout or slam some object the next time something doesn't go as planned. The reaction you get from your coworkers will be the reaction the rest of us have to your son smashing a trophy or McDonough throwing his away & pouting afterward.
  14. Not a huge fan of his, and do 99%of the time find him to be a blowhard; however, I really cannot refute any of his points. I certainly hope you are correct, and the worldwide support shown leads to saving Olympic wrestling.
  15. As an older brother, this is one of the cooler threads to read of all time here. Good luck on the next level.
  16. I have witnessed this is in our club in INdy as well. I find it funny & sad. 99% of the hardcore dads never wrestled or were lower tier wrestlers that certainly are motivated to make their kids standouts. What I find interesting is that Deondre Wilson 120lb state champ just started wrestling as a FR. He is only a junior. Mention this to them. Also Andrice Martin 120lb 7th place also started wrestling as a FR. Before the age of 12, it just doesn't matter. I have been to all state championships since 1989, and have yet to hear about someone's Bantam or Intermediate state chamionships when they list tournaments won under the lights. Let them have fun & learn parents & coaches. It will be more beneficial for them in the long run.
  17. It should be a lesson for all the parents of kids 12 & under: relax, losing or winning at that age is not important!
  18. Yes. He is super impressive, and did not start wrestling until 8th grade.
  19. congrats & good luck. That was an impressive performance tonight,
  20. Thank you. I have never bashed a referee on here, and am not doing that now. I am stating that it is too bad that Beech Grove kid didn't get his hand raised. He earned that victory. I f I am behind you with my left hand wrapped around your left knee, and my right hand wrapped on you right knee, and you have one knee and both hands down face down(I am behind you). That is a takedown, i don't care who refs the match on any level. I have been around the sport 37 years, and have wrestled at all levels...things happen. That said, there are many posters on this site from all walks & levels of this sport, and no one that was in that gym will disagree with me here. I have yet to hear one...just you who apparently did not witness it. I have no axe to grind here. He is a great official.
  21. That is what makes it more absurd. He got it wrong this time. We all make mistakes.
  22. No offense to Brett, he is a good wrestler, and will have much success going forward in his career; however, his first round regional win/loss was the most obsurd non call i have EVER seen. That was pathetic to absolutly screw that Beech Grove kid who outright got that takedown at the end. No one in that entire gym, including the PM coaches didn't think that was a takedown. I am affiliated with neither team btw, and have no ill or favoritism with either team. Bad deal there...sorry. Good luck to Brett & all wrestlers this weekend.
