  4. 11/20/2013 The first regular season NAIA National Rankings were released today and CCSJ had two wrestlers make the list at their respective weight classes, Junior Eric Johnson 6th at 197lbs and Freshman Dennie Brown 15th at 184lbs. Johnson is a returning All-American for the Crimson Wave after pacing 8th in last years NAIA National Championships. Brown meanwhile is coming off of an impressive debut where he went 4-0 at the UW Oshkosh Open en route to the 184lbs championship. "Its nice to get recognition for the program and I'm excited to see what the season will hold for these two guys," said Head Coach Ryan Rivera. "Its still very early though and everyone just has to take things one match at a time to keep getting better."
  5. 11/16/13 - The Crimson Wave Wrestling team travelled to the University Wisconsin Oshkosh this weekend to compete in the Dan Gable Endowment Open. The men were led by Freshman Dennie Brown of Crawfordsville, IN who came away as the tournament champion at 184lbs. Brown began the tournament with 7-1 decision over Alan Dahlke of UW Oshkosh and followed that with another win, this time 7-2 over Chance Shea of Harper College. In his next bout he faced off with Lakeland College’s Aaron Almedina and earned a finals appearance after defeating Almedina 9-6. Brown then secured the championship with a tough 5-3 decision over Nic Veling from University of Wisconsin. In that match Brown got an early lead with a takedown in the first period, but Veling rallied back to tie the match 3-3 late. The deciding points came in the final seconds when Brown countered his opponents attack to get a takedown on the edge of the mat. “Dennie went out today and did a great a job of getting the first takedown and controlling the pace of his matches,” said Head coach Ryan Rivera. “When someone can do that they will always be in a good position to win.” Rivera was also happy with the team’s overall performance though he recognized the team still needs work. “The biggest takeaway is that I was very pleased with everyone’s effort, but we all have room to grow going forward.” Also placing in the event for CCSJ was Freshman Scott Pitrowski (3-1) in third place at 285lbs, Sophomore Ramiro Rojas (4-2) in fourth place at 157lbs, Junior Gabe Mota (3-2) in fifth place, and Junior Eric Johnson (3-2) in fifth place at 197lbs. Next week the team travels to Campbellsville University in KY, on Nov 23rd to compete in three dual matches.
  6. http://www.ccsj.edu/athletics/wrestling/index.html 10/29/13 -The Crimson Wave wrestling season is nearly upon us. This is an exciting time for the Crimson Wave as they are building off of last year’s success. Things seem to be heading in the right direction under first year Head Coach Ryan Rivera. Coach Rivera was the Interim Head Coach last season after being an assistant at CCSJ for three years. “Our team is working hard to take the next step and start competing with the top programs in the country. We have some very dedicated guys that are going to take us far,” said Coach Rivera. Eric Johnson is looking to build off of his successful run last year with an 8th place overall finish at the National Tournament. Eric Johnson is currently ranked 6th in the NAIA Preseason Coach’s Poll at 197lbs. Eric made history at CCSJ by becoming the programs only All American. “Eric is not satisfied with just placing at last year’s National Championships; he is coming back hungry to be the best. He has been a great example to the rest of the team,” said Coach Rivera. Anthony Hawkins also received votes at 133lbs and the team had 10 points towards the Team National Rankings putting us at 29th overall. “Our depth is going to be key to any success we have this year and I am always looking to add quality guys to the program,” added Coach Rivera. Here is a breakdown of how the Crimson Wave looks by weight class: 125- Returning to the 125lbs weight class for the Crimson Wave will be Senior Anthony Hawkins (Crown Point, IN). Hawkins, a former Indiana State Champ for Crown Point High School, will look to finish his career strong after having qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in two of his previous three seasons. Also competing at 125lbs this season will be freshman Robert Chicvara (Hammond, IN) from Gavit High School. 133- Battling for the 133lbs spot will be two incoming freshman in Adam Garcia (Merrillville, IN) and Tony Vasquez (Hobart, IN). Garcia was a highly decorated wrestler for Merrillville High School by finishing top five in the state twice during his career. Vasquez also brings a successful track record with him, after only suffering 4 losses in his senior season for Hobart High School. 141- RS Sophomore Chris Pajdzik, (Hammond, IN) is hoping to make an impact at 141lbs for CCSJ after dropping down a weight class from last season. Challenging Pajdzik for mat time will be talented Freshman Landon Nave (Crawforsdville, IN). 149- This is another talented weight class for the Crimson Wave with Senior Ryan Peters (Hammond, IN) coming back as a returning starter from two seasons ago. Senior Andrew Kepchar (Merrillville, IN) will be competing here as well with Freshman Andrew Queseda (Miami, FL). 157- Returning to the team and looking to take control of the weight class is Sophomore Ramiro Rojas (Miami, FL) who was a National Qualifier for the Crimson Wave two seasons ago. Mike Migowa (Tinley Park, IL) is another very accomplished wrestler who will battle with Rojas. 165- Two more newcomers to the program will be taking on each other for the top spot at this weight class. Freshman Ryan Camp (Griffith, IN) will face off with Kevin Dix (Lake Central, IN. 174- Sophomore Tim Miller (Frankfort, IL) is returning as the starter at 174lbs after a promising first year and will face competition from Freshman Albert Pearson (Palos Hills, IL). 184- RS Freshman Dennie Brown (Crawfordsville, IN) is holding down 184lbs for the team. He joins CCSJ having been a State Qualifier for Southmont High School. Freshman Alex Jara (Merrillville, IN) is also competing here. 197- Junior Eric Johnson (Highland, IN) comes into the season ranked 6th nationally in the NAIA after placing 8th at last year’s National Championship. Also competing at 197lbs are RS Junior Gabe Mota (Hammond, IN) and Freshman Abe Alrhami (Frankfort, IL). 285- RS Senior Coty Anderson (Highland, IN) is the returning starter at 285lbs for CCSJ and he is working hard to bounce back from a disappointing finish last season. Anderson placed 4th in the NAIA East Regional two seasons ago. Freshmen Scott Pitrowsk (Lowell, IN), Mike Pajdzik (Hammond, IN) and Brayon Gary (Fishers, IN) will all be challenging for mat time.
  7. The new college rules this year also addressed lack of mat area by making it mandatory a change that the matted apron around the wrestling area must extend at least 5 feet between out-of-bounds lines when two mats are side-by-side. Additionally, the apron must extend at least 5 feet from the out-of-bounds line and any obstruction such as a table, bleachers or wall. I don't think it would take to much of a commitment from schools to get the extra few feet.
  8. I'm not sure if this discussion has been had yet but now that the college season is starting in the next couple weeks, what are everyone's thoughts on the new rules. Will they lead to more scoring, have any unintended consequences, and will these rules eventually trickle down to high school? http://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2013-06-24/mat-side-video-option-approval-among-wrestling-rules-changes-2013- Replays Made the mat-side video review rule an option for use beginning in the 2013-14 season Edge of Mat In a progression of the rule that allows wrestlers to score takedowns on the edge of the wrestling area, it was approved that near-falls and pins can occur as long as any part of either wrestler remains inbounds. Reaction time on Takedowns If the defensive wrestler’s hand comes in contact with the mat, it is considered control and a takedown should be awarded.
  9. The Calumet College of St. Joseph Intra-squad will be held 10/29 at 7:00 pm. The team will be split into two teams (Maroon and Grey) and compete in live matches against each other. The event will be held at our home gym at 2400 New York Ave, Whiting IN. Athletic building is located in the rear of the school. Admission is free to the public. 2013/2014 ROSTER http://www.ccsj.edu/athletics/rosters/wrestling/index.html 2013/2014 SCHEDULE http://www.ccsj.edu/athletics/schedules/wrestling/index.html
  10. The NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll was just released yesterday and has some Indiana boys throughout the rankings. http://www.naia.org/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=27900&ATCLID=209290629
  11. We recently bought some new Dollamur flexi roll practice mats and now that we are using them we are having trouble with them being to slick as practice progresses. Is this common for these mats? Is it simply cause they are new? What are some tips to remedy this problem? Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. -Coach Rivera
  12. We just got new mats with Velcro seams for our wrestling room at Calumet College St Joespeh. It's only been about 1 month since we have had them in but they seem durable and they are effective at staying together to create a seamless feel to the mats. They are great asthetically but I would recommend them more though if you have to move the mats frequently cause they obviously eliminate mat tape expenses. Those lightweight mats with seven or more strips can use a lot more tape than the traditional mats. Only knock was that it took more people and more time to get the seams lined up perfectly but that could just be cause it was the first time we had done it. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Ryan Rivera Interim Head Coach Calumet College of St. Joseph rrivera@ccsj.edu
  13. E.C. Central new head coach is Jose Paradise former coach is Reggie Wright.
  14. 1.) This question is pointless since the only real answer is Karelin. 3 Olympic golds 1 silver; 9 world championships; Undefeated in international comp for 13 years, 6 years w/o being scored on. He man handled grown men like they were rag dolls for three consecutive olympics. No one was close to him. 2.) If you want to narrow it down to freestyle to make it more of an argument, don't forget about Artur Taymozov originally from Russia but competes for Uzbekistan and just captured his 3 straight gold at 120 and has a silver from 2000 too. 3.) When having the Phelps is the greatest debate, you have to consider that 9 medals including 7 gold are from relays, which the U.S. is always a factor in whether phelps is on those teams are not. His dominance was only for about an eight year period despite him picking up two individual golds he was far from dominant this time around and obviously didn't even win a medal in 2000. All that said he is still in the conversation for greatest Olympian for just how dominant his time at the top was.
  15. Insert Quote how are things looking fro coach gilbert & the crimson wave for 2012-2013 season? i think this program could be a hidden gem for the state but not sure of what is available for our HS athletes there. Not sure what you mean, the team has 4 guys wrestling at nationals next weekend with everyone coming back next year. As for the school its a four year college that is one of the least expensive private schools in the Midwest. Merit based athletic scholarship are also awarded to students athletes. It's been kind of a rebuild year but i think Gilbert will have his team ready to compete with the top NAIA schools next year.
  16. Maybe this is old news but I noticed Quiroz from Chesterton did not wrestle sectionals. Anyone know why, I thought he would make a run at the finals again this year. Also were there any guality guys in the differnt sectionals that where not able to wrestle this year for what ever reasons.
  17. CCSJ will be postponing their inaugural wrestling camp. It will be tentatively moved to July 26th-29th. The Crimson Wave will be announcing the hiring of a new Head Coach soon and pushing the date back will allow for him to be a part of this event as well as hopefully provide a boost in camp attendance. For questions regarding the camp or any other matter, please contact: Ryan Rivera Calumet College of St. Joseph Interim Head Coach rrivera@ccsj.edu 219-473-4386 Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to any prospective participants.

  21. From my point of view not having same day weigh-ins doesn't help attendance any either. Being from the region, its to long of drive to make twice in a row and its not worth paying for a hotel either. Its bad enough in his economy without having to pay extra gas and or hotel money. Maybe in the future they can consider satellite weigh-ins or something to help the kids not from the central part of the state.
  22. He's been seen drilling pretty hard before their last few duals so it would be no surprise to have him back.
  23. Hawkins Wins Harper Open 2/6/11 ? The Crimson Wave wrestling team competed at the Harper College Open on Saturday in Palatine, IL. Anthony Hawkins won the 125 lb weight class going 2-0 on the day. Teammate Ryan Peters placed third at 149 lbs finishing 2-1, and Lance Surma finished 4th at 157 lbs finishing his day at 1-2. The Crimson Wave wrestling team will travel to the NAIA Regional Qualifier on February 19th.
  24. Sweet, great job as always. Just curious if there will be a new pound for pound list, as has been done in the past, prior to the post season.
