Haven't posted in a while - but this one is interesting. When I was coaching and running events - I would never entertain the thought of a B squad coming to our events. We were a upper middle of the pack program, always chasing the top teams, but never quite getting there. Yes we'd have individual success - and team success to a point - but not on the likes of the states elite. We were faced and approached many times with teams wanting to bring a B squad. But never did it - and here is why. I would often share with other coaches who had programs like mine - that inviting or allowing the top tier programs to have their JV's compete against varsity competition - in the long run - only helped the top tier school - not the next tier that I felt we were a part of. I felt that you were continuing to help build/keep the power schools on top for the following years - while we'd struggle to reload. My job as a coach at my school - was to build my program - not help somebody else's with additional opportunities. I didn't mind the challenge of chasing the top - but I sure wasn't going to help it keep beating my over the head each year. Make those programs with loads of kids host their own events. If they've got loads of kids - they've probably got loads of help to run a good JV events. We had JV's - and we made it a point to travel long distances to find them matches - against all levels of competition - at JV events. We even took our JV's to events in Illinois, because of our closeness to the state line. Again - my job was to build my team - not somebody else's team. So I felt like one way of trying to keep them down - was limiting these additional opportunities.

BLF has no organ. MSA will always remembered for the organ. After each finals intro the organ would crank up a notch for the next guy. It built atmosphere as each guy was announced. We'll never see another one like it. Simply awesome.

Registration is now open for the Munster Folkstyle Open - this Sunday 1/29. Event will be held at Wilbur Wright Middle School - right next to Munster HS. Wrestling will be spilt into two groups and begin at different times. 9am - Pee Wee / Bantam / Intermediate 11:30am - Novice / Schoolboy / Cadet Wrestlers should be there 30 minutes before wrestling begins to check in. Oh yes - conference tourneys. You can see why I wasn't on the committee! How about this thought. The state has wanted our individual tourney to be 3 weeks. What if we went to a three week individual tourney - eliminating one of the rounds - but finishing the state finals on the same date. With the week that is created - you could hold your dual state event. There wouldn't be any tournaments in the way then. I guess then everyone would get what they want - coaches, fans, state organization. Just a thought.

How about the weekend before sectionals? To me that would be about as good a time as any for a "team state" kind of dual series. Everyone would have their lineups where they want them by then - injuries could have been worked through - most schools are done with the semester, so as not to interfere with school. And I don't want to offend anyone - but I don't think there are that many super strong invitationals that weekend as well. Besides if you know anything about coaching - sometimes when your down a bit - if an amazing team is plucked from your invite - it might be better than getting your team ripped up - heading into the sectional. It would be late enough that the coaches could vote the 4-8 schools per class that they would want to see. If I were asked to attend - I'd drop everything to attend. The normal power schools probably would just learn to leave this weekend open - and those that are on an up year - coaches and even AD's would probably be honored to be invited or attend. Even if you figure in the cost to break a contract (which I don't think many schools would enforce) - it's pretty minimal.

As of Wednesday night - we have a pretty good turnout in the works. Teams who are committed to bring a group full include: Munster, Griffith, Culver, Portage, SB Riley, East Chicago, and Thornwood (IL) Looks to be a great tourney - with all sized kids - and levels of competition. We will be hosting our second summer wrestling event this Friday evening at Munster HS - for HS aged wrestlers only. We are hosting a Summer Super Dual Tourney - on Saturday June 18th. We are in need of one team to fill out the tournament. You will wrestle 5 duals - against some pretty quality competition from Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. All pretty top notch teams - so it is a great summer meet. Entry Fee is $200 We are looking for teams that can fill their entire line up. It is open to next years 9-12 graders - so please no outgoing seniors!
