  2. Chalfant had an incredible season. Heavyweight was rediculous in depth. To say that because he didn't win the whole thing because of coaching is rediculous. It could have been won by any one of the top guys on any given day. He stumbled, end of story. Otherwise, I believe he would have been the national champ. Awesome wrestler, had a great career. But to say he didn't develop at IU is pure bs. He started out as a football player in college. Decided to wrestle, and went from not being an all american last year to being top 6 this year. Pretty good jump. Were we all hoping for more, sure, but stuff happens. Not everything is the coaches fault. Great job Adam, it was a pleasure to watch you compete.
  3. I had the pleasure of having coach Willetts as my coach my freshman year in high school. I wish I would have had him there the next 3 years. He was terrific in the practice room. Taught me how to push myself more than I ever would have before and it has stayed with me my whole life. Haven't seen him in over 20 years but remember those brutal practices like they were yesterday. Very sad to see he passed. You will be missed coach. Alonzo Shepherd

  9. Without a doubt, Boston would have to have been the favorite at 106. However, had he made a jump in weight, say to 113, then a contender, but not necessarily the favorite. It is very difficult to move up in weight and remain dominate. Here is a list of 103lb state champs since 1998 and how they faired the next years. 1998 - Doherty (11) 103-1st; 1999 112-1st 1999 - Iannarelli (12) 103-1st 2000 - Sheets (9) 103-1st; 2001 112-3rd; 2002 119-3rd; 2003 119-3rd 2001 - Clark (12) 103-1st 2002 - Hartman (12) 103-1st 2003 - Martinez (11) 103-1st; 2004 112-3rd 2004 - Lloyd (11) 103-1st; 2005 119-Qualifier 2005 - Galka (9) 103-1st; 2006 119-Qualifier; 2007 130-1st; 2008 135-2nd 2006 - Harper (9) 103-1st; 2007 112-1st; 2008 125-1st; 2009 130-4th 2007 - Eppert (10) 103-1st; 2008 112-2nd; 2009 119-1st 2008 - Raley (9) 103-1st; 2008 119-Qualifier; 2010 125-2nd; 2011 135-1st 2009 - Phillips (9) 103-1st; 2010 103-1st; 2011 112-3rd 2010 - Phillips 103-1st; 2011 112-3rd 2011 - Boston 103-1st Only one has repeated as champ the year they moved up a weight class and that was Harper. Only 5 moved up weight classes and ever one another Championship (2 of which were not freshman when they won at 103). 103 may be the easiest class to win a championship as a freshman, but it may also be the most difficult to move up from and win another state championship.
  10. I have not done he research to see how this class compares with those of the past, but it sure has alot of talent. 13 potential 4X State Qualifiers with one potential 4X Champ, 2 potential 3X Champs, and 2 potential 2X Champs. 13 other potential 3X State Qualifiers and 57 potential 2X State Qualifiers. This is a list of the members of the class of 2012 and what they have done at the IHSAA State Tournament. 13. Yes, Shepherd and Weekley were the only 2 victories for Jeff in the dual. Shepherd won by major and Weekley won a decision. Curtley was up on Boots until late in the 3rd period and got thrown in a headlock and pinned. Pratt was winning and got thrown in a headlock late in the third and lost by decision. Mater Dei is going to be tough to beat. They're pretty impressive this year.

  19. Congrats to Columbus East! On another note, I think the HHC could be well represented this year at Conseco. Here is a breakdown of some kids with a good shot at making it there. 103 - I know Kennedy lost, but I think he still has a good shot at qualifying and Noblitt could surprise some as well 112 - Shepherd should be the top dog at Semi-State and Engleking could be the spoiler for some others at Evansville 119 - Taylor can compete with anybody at Evansville and Carlisle is pretty tough as well 125 - Rieker should be there and you can't count out Resch and Castro 130 - Rieker is tough and Montgomery could surprise some that look past him 135 - Rieker and Gast both have a good shot 140 - Harbin and Shuler should compete well 145 - Weekley should be the top dog at Semi-State 152 - Adams has a shot and Browner and Reynolds are scrappers 160 - Johnson and Marlin are both tough and should compete well 171 - Wathen should be there and you can't count out Brierly 189 - Curtley will surprise some 215 - Bass is a beast and Pratt isn't far behind 285 - Collett will be in the thick of it and Dewitt could come through as well I know for many it will come down to draw, but I believe we could see 6-8 make it to Conseco.

  21. Actually, Schroeder did not wrestle Goebel at Jeff Classic. He beat Engleking in the semis and lost to Shepherd in the finals. Shepherd beat Goebel in the semis (and beat Goebel 12-4 earlier in the season). That being said, I think the 112 rankings are correct. Shepherd and Schroeder were both at state last year. Schoettle is good and made it to the ticket round last year and Goebel is top dog coming out of the Evansville Regional (until proven otherwise). But like you said, there are several other tough kids that will be in the mix as well.
  22. Robby Taylor of Madison is a tough 119lb wrestler that I think is getting overlooked.
  23. At Franklin: 103 Bevans (Yorktown) over Whitten (Ben Davis)(8-2 I believe) Lykins (Franklin) over Whitten (Ben Davis) by fall Bevans (Yorktown) over Lykins (Franklin)(didn't catch score) Wireman (Holt ranked #3 in Michigan) over Bevans (Yorktown)1-0 112 Shepherd (Jeffersonville) over Phillips (Yorktown) 4-2 in OT 119 Moss (Ben Davis) over Carroll (Yorktown) 2-0 OT 125 Kief (Franklin) over Trevino (Holt ranked 5th in Michigan)(didn't catch score) 145 Hiestand (Yorktown) over Weekley (Jeffersonville) 9-6 189 Curtley (Jeffersonville) over Neff (Yorktown) 9-7
  24. I think Carlisle will get the first seed because he beat Holwager and Holwager beat Taylor. So Holwager and Taylor would meet in the semi-finals (depends on seeding criteria though). Jeffs 160 is Marlin. His only loss as HHC duals was to Baldwin by 2.
  25. Franklin Community will have Franklin, Yorktown, Jeffersonvile, Ben Davis, Brownsburg, and Holt Michigan. Should be some great matches. Here should be some of the match-ups between ranked opponents: 103: #5 Bevans - Yorktown vs. #14 Whitten - Ben Davis vs. #3 (Michigan) Wireman - Holt 112: #7 Shepherd - Jeffersonville vs. #9 Phillips - Yorktown 119: #3 Carroll - Yorktown vs. #6 Moss - Ben Davis 125: #7 Kief - Franklin vs. #4 (Michigan) Trevino - Holt 135: #1 Jackson - Yorktown vs. #11 Kriech - Franklin vs. #5 (Michigan) Dyer - Holt 145: #2 Hiestand - Yorktown vs. #4 Weekley - Jeffersonville
