  1. One of our guys was wrestling his 1st match ever. He was so nervous that when he and his opponent shook hands to begin the match, he vomited all over his opponent. The opponent said to the ref, "I forfeit. There's no way I'm wrestling that kid." That was his only win of the season.
  2. My son was a regional champ last year and drew a 3rd place finisher from another regional, who he ended up losing to in the ticket round. The wrestler ended up finishing 4th in the State. I asked my son if he knew ahead of time that this could happen and that he could have had a better matchup by defaulting the regional finals and finishing 2nd, what would he have done. He said he would still want to be the regional champ, even if it meant a bad draw, because he wrestles to win every time he goes on the mat, no matter what the next matchup may be. He said that if you want to be the champ, you must beat everyone who comes in your path, and that a true competitor never loses on purpose.
  3. The comments that are condoning this situation are just a microcosm of today's society - the win at all cost attitude. What happened to honor? Our society condones these actions as long as the coach is winning, but once the coach starts losing, all bets are off. My son received a tough draw in the ticket round at Semi-State last year, and thought he might, but never once thought about throwing his match in the Regional championship to get a better draw. He can look himself in the mirror today and know that he "tried his best and gave everything he had on the mat!" The thing I like most about High School wrestling is that it teaches kids life lessons. What life lesson is manipulating the system teaching our kids?
  4. I went to the brackets on Broadcast sports website. 103 finals is Stevens vs Brooks.
  5. Parmer also defeated Schaeffer by Fall last week in a dual at Perry Meridian.
  6. A pin gets the crowd and teammates fired up, just like a home run in baseball, and gets the adrenaline pumping. A tech is many times boring to watch because you often have a dominate wrestler taking down, cutting, then taking down. However, as the kid on the short end of the score, a tech is better since he is usually giving 100% and is preventing the pin.
  7. Kesterman's a solid wrestler. He had older brothers who were pretty good. I could be wrong, but I think Ben might have qualified for State at 103 his freshman year.
  8. If a wrestler is good enough to be considered for being ranked, he won't fly under the radar. It doesn't take long before everyone knows who the good wrestlers are, even without coaches or others providing information.
  9. The Spartan Classic in Connersville is large - 32 teams - but not the talent level of the Al Smith. Still, there are usually some great matches. It runs the same time as the Al Smith.
  10. Is Luke Schoefield still wrestling for Franklin? He was a SQ in 2008 and could be tough.
  11. No problem. With so many wrestlers from a lot of different schools there at Semi-state, it's hard to keep track of.
