Friday night at Maconaquah was filled with some great action and a lot of young ladies putting themselves on the line, but I wanted to share with all of you a photo I took that really hit me.

Heritage High School hasn't (according to IndianaMat results) won a dual meet in the last four years and they are 0-47 in that time. But every time I see coaches Lockett and Martin, I am impressed at the way they run their program. They are full of energy and passion for their kids. I have seen it at home dual meets, at the ACAC duals and I saw it on Friday night.

Heritage had one girl wrestling. One girl. Yet the entire team (almost, I think) and both coaches were in attendance and coaching their hearts out and laughing with their kids. This made a huge impression on me and I will be rooting for the Patriots the rest of the year.
The whole team spent six hours in a gym to watch Amber Hoy wrestle four matches.

Kudos to the Heritage team and to both coaches for the role they are playing in their program and congrats to Amber Hoy on her placement Friday night.

Is a must for what? The training "365 a year" is a big downfall to this whole conversation. We've lost casual wrestlers because a combination of things.  But training every day of the year is going to drop retention rates terribly.
Youth are getting burnt out from a youth season that starts in November and ends in March. But "if you want to be good you need to do Freestyle and Greco too." So now youth wrestling can be until May. It's no wonder that retention rate of athletes and coaches is so low.
This isn't just wrestling, but the youth sports culture is so out of control that parents are pulled 100 different directions. It's easy to stop taking their child to wrestling when they have to travel for wrestling, baseball and basketball, etc...

At the high school level, we are asking our kids to train year round because we want them to be the best. But at smaller schools where those athletes do more than 1 sport they don't have time to train year round for 2 or 3 sports. I know coaches that get upset at athletes that aren't there all summer and spring, but if you want to know the truth, those part-time athletes are what is going to keep this sport competitive at semi-state and regional levels. We can't diminish their value because they aren't a state placer or aren't there every off-season practice. More participants will always help increase the competition level.

ehscoach got a reaction from dstruck in NFHS looking to reduce weight classes
I worried that one day we would cut weight classes, but I always thought it would be by 1 to 13 so that there was a logical tie-breaker in a dual meet.

I always hoped they added 1 for a tie-breaker. I can’t see how cutting 2 is good for the sport. I do like the idea of 14 total wrestlers regardless of weight class on varsity.

I have been on a visit there and was thoroughly impressed. A small concern was that the seating was 2nd level. So essentially you are watching the wrestling from the 2nd level. Which actually isn't terrible because it keeps fans really out of the action and away from kids, etc...
I believe they have recently added more showers. I was surprised at how many of these huge parks didn't have showers that I have looked at. Grand Park does have showers, and supposedly recently added more.
Also, the date was a huge concern. Jan 11 is not available for next year (sounds like it isn't for Fort Wayne either.) But Jan 4th is, then Jan 2nd the next year, and we were checking to see if in year 3 we could get Jan 8.
I'm sort of being transparent, but these are all discussions that have been had. People have also offered up going to 4 classes of 8 or 10, because this middle group is really being lost. The 1300-2400 population size feels they have no chance of ever getting in. This would make for shorter days as well... We'll see how it all goes soon.

A lot of thoughts on this topic...
    1) If the middle school "state champ" got so good and won state while at one school, why would he need to transfer schools to win state? They have proved they could do it at that school.
    2) "coaches that get paid more" does not make them a better coach.
    3) I can't imagine how hard it is for athletic directors to find good coaches. And then for those coaches to find good assistants, and a junior high coach, and youth coaches. I feel pretty blessed to have a great coaching staff. But small towns have enough time finding one guy that can do it. The sport, to do it right, is year round. I read an article a few years ago about how most coaches were either divorced or their kids were grown up, because it takes so much time away from their family. Tough balance. I am finding out with a 3 and a 1 year old...
    4) As a coach, you better not put all your eggs in one basket. At Edgewood, we have always stressed the team aspect. That's why I fell in love with this sport. I want to run somebody you don't want to mess with out at each weight class. But it's hard for schools on the rise (or small schools) to have depth. 1 lost athlete can mean a lot. Over the past few years, I have lost a kid to Missouri (he took 5th there), a state qualifier to a rival school, and a regional champ dropped out of school. It's important for a coach to stress more than one athlete's importance.
So, I think what honestly hurts the sport (and all youth sports in general), is the year round aspect. We are producing the best wrestlers ever, but I think losing a lot of the "casual" wrestlers, which gives us much more depth in the sport of wrestling. "Hey wanna come try wrestling for the first time and get your face kicked in by this guy who has trained everyday for 5 years? Does that sound fun?"
Parents deserve to do what is best for their child. Transfers are just part of the reason wrestling has issues.
