IMO as a personal trainer, CC and Wrestling, although they may appear to go hand, actually oppose each other. While CC is primarily aerobic by nature, wrestling is absolutely anaerobic. In short, in order to get faster for CC an individual needs to train to increase their max heart rate in order to enable themselves to maintain a higher pace while at 80% of their max output(MAX V02). Wrestlers on the other hand achieve that max heart rate much faster than a runner and have to perform while at a higher % of their Max heart rate. To sum it up. An in shape cross country runner will achieve exhaustion on the mat much faster than an in shape wrestler(ATP issue). The runner will be able to recover quickly. But a wrestlers muscle energy(ATP) access will be way ahead of a CC runner. This is the white vs red muscle fiber argument. CC is more of a red muscle activity that can, over long runs, weaken and therefore jeopardize white muscle which is the quick twitch muscle fiber that is the more primary muscle fiber needed for wrestling. This is an argument that has been going on for years and I'm sure will continue. I can say that my personal search to balance the two has gone on for over 20 years and unfortunately due to my age I'm no longer the best test subject.
Not to discount your research. But just make sure the kids do some sprint workouts and throw some hills in there. You then will have your anaerobic. Plus I may be wrong, but I don't think I am, you don't really increase your max heart rate that has more to do with age and gender than anything. You actually get in shape so it is hard to hit your max heart rate. Therefore you can keep a sustained effort at a lower heart rate but at a faster pace.

Notice when anyone agrees with Joe they preface it with "I have to agree with Joe".

They should just throw my name on there to get it out of the way.

If you plan on eating out tomorrow. Name the type of food and I will point you in the right direction. Unfortunately since it is Sunday some of the best places to get grub will be closed.

Weird... They have a couple State champs headed their way in about 10 years. It will be a shame if they can't win a conference title also.

Slim pick'ins in the Fort Wayne area. There is only one coach I can think of that I would want to take over a program and he probably isn't going any where.
Thanks buddy.

They need a change and it has to start with the top.

More predictions:
I will be looking Dapper as usual
Of the six eligible returning semi-state qualifiers at least ONE will NOT make it to semi-state
The hospitality food will run out by the time I get back there
Most of the ugly singlets will come out of the Peru regional
Sam Reisen will have the best hair
At least three wrestlers will be booed
Yorktown wrestlers will have three different singlets during the finals.
Some crazy dad from Elkhart Memorial will complain about the draw during the week of semi-state
Just a FYI. They did away with hospitality food at semi-state. Probably because the year before last almost got violent when all coaches that had any heavies wrestling got no food.

Loppy you are going to break a hip.

Why don't you care about former semi state qualifiers and what they are up to?
The most famous one is running a wrestling website.

and ive seen Rodney throughout my career, dude was good, made it to the finals which is more than I can say...also had the toughest road I can remember the state champ in sectional, regional, semi-state and state finals...insane
Back when FWCS pulled their weight.

Alright, I have taken a lot of losses over the years, you may have given me one of them. My conditioning has often been terrible(hence the pack a day nickname). But even when exhausted I dont get tossed around for five, but if that was you just being facetious, the rest of ur claim is completely plausible
Rodney you're a good guy and a great wrestler. Good to have you on the board. Y2 be nice to him.

Well in the first period I hit a super duck and then suplayed him for 5 points and ended the period. This was in the first 15 seconds.
In the second period he his a John Smith low single and took me down. After the restart I hit my "Lucas Mackesy" patented slide by and then hit another 5 to end the period and match.
After the match I did four cartwheels and a round off to celebrate.
That made me giggle.

I would like to state that there probably is no bigger fan of wrestling than Bolden. Well maybe the other "Puking Billy Goat". I have watched him wrestle since high school and he can do some pretty impressive stuff. I have also traveled with him and the other goat to Iowa. With that said I can see the Y2 beating him (once). Y2 has a slippery slide by that he can catch you on the first time you wrestle him. Then he will will just stall that match out.
Please tell me that is how the match went Y2.

I just want to go ahead and nominate this as the "Greatest of All Time" thread on indianamat. Sure as hell beats the "why don't some teams shake hands with the opposing coach after a match" thread. Who's with me on this one?
I am. Why don't they shake hands?

We have one that went in reverse too, due wanting to prepare for the Air Force Acadamy after graduation. Through diet and exercise he was able to drop weight the right way.
Freshman year (his first in the sport) he started out at HWT weighing around 240 and dropped to below 220.
Sophomore year came in at 189 and was able to get to 171.
Junior year came in at and maintained 160
We project 160-171 again for his Senior year.
In this case wrestling has turned him into almost half the man he was. Plus a much more athletic and healthy person.
That is just good stuff.

I like it.

Brian Harvey started at 106 and ended up winning state at 160 last year. That's a pretty big weight jump.
I remember a wrestler from Eastside went from 103 his Freshman year to 160 is Sophomore year.

Tell me if you do any of the following at practice:
Sprints- I hope not because you can't run on the wrestling mat or you are hit with stalling.
Swimming- I hope not because there is nothing better than just wrestling to become a better wrestler.
Lifting weights- I hope not because you can bench 500lbs and squat 800lbs but that isn't going to make your double leg any better or help you get off bottom in wrestling.
Cart wheels/front rolls/etc- You are never going to do a cart wheel or any type of roll in a wrestling match.
Long distance running- See sprints
Dodgeball/Matball/etc- No balls in wrestling
I am pretty sure my coach in high school would go as far to say. "Yes any of those things are pretty much worthless for wrestling"
-
Don't let Y2 fool you he struggles with the same problems that most of us do. There are way more kids training from other schools than his at the practices.
-
You would get much better competition heading south with a couple lads from your son's school on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Then he may have to talk to you in person. Who would want to do that?
-
WOW!!! I move to Homestead and the conference disbands. I really didn't think the world revolved around me that much. I will truly be sad if my boys will not be able to compete in the NHC. I have always been proud to be a part of it.

I am just not finding anything on being able to increase your max heart rate on the internets. I can see you being able to push your body harder and the person actually hitting their max heart rate and not some other plateau.

Quote from article.
"Maximum heart rate is not a trainable attribute. This means as you become more or less fit -- your maximum heart rate does not change."
