  1. The TD call in that Conlley/Rodgers match, which I feel was obviously incorrect, not cost Conley the match and a state placing, it cost Avon the team championship. Take away all the team points that Rodgers accumulated and add points to Avon, you have a state championship in the home of the Orioles.
  2. Let me give you a historical perspective on how unfair "true placings." can be. The ISHAA tournament in the 70's and 80's (and I don't know how much farther back) used to make the loser of the semi-finals matches go immediately into a consolation round against the quarter final losers to the two wrestlers who made it into the championship bout. The winners of that match wrestled for 3rd/4th while the two losers DID NOT PLACE because only the top 4 wrestlers got medals. So if you lost a hard fought and emotionally charged match to go to the finals, you had to immediately come back to wrestle a kid who had been resting since that morning and is now psyched up to get a chance to place. It was a totally unjust system that myself and other coaches lobbied the IHSAA hard for several years to get changed. History does not have to repeat itself.
  3. That's a nice winner's bracket, but no place matches, no records, grade level, etc.
  4. Anyone got any tips on how I can print out a full page bracket for this weekend? I've tried several ways of cutting and pasting, but no success. I hate tracking on that miniature State Finals program.
  5. Made it to my first State Finals at Southport in 1970. Gonna make it 44 in a row for me. I didn't grow up in Indy area, so I didn't make the trip while messing in my diapers like Pete Schroeder did. He's got me by a few years.
  6. When someone tells you that they just had a baby & it weighed 8 lbs 1 ounce, and you wonder if it could cut to get to under 8 to make the lighter class.
  7. Until the late 80's or maybe the early 90's, there were only 4 places awarded at the State Finals. A wrestler could make it to the Semi-finals and NOT PLACE IN THE TOP 4. If you lost in the semis, you would have to immediately wrestle the person who lost in the quarterfinals to the finalist who had just beaten you. Think about how unfair that was!!! You just lost your chance to be in the Championship match, and you had to wrestle someone who hadn't wrestled since 9 - 11 that morning. That person is mentally and physically ready to be back in the hunt for a medal while you have just lost the most important match of your life. If you lose that match, you get NOTHING but a bus ride home.
  8. Not scoring the first round of the state Finals is RIDICULOUS!!! It is a 16 man tournament with no Byes. It should be scored per Nat'l Federation rules just like every other tournament. Personally, I have been to every state tournament the past 41 years. Creating a state team champion on the individual placewinners of this tournament can add some extra excitement to the tournament, but only a few people in the stands will understand how a tournament like this is scored round by round. I still feel the best way to determine a TRUE team champion is to wreatle a Dual Meet Tournament, but that now is a moot point, so let's hope we have an exciting weekend of individual efforts and team accomplishments.
  9. Why haven't Moss and LeCount met this year?
  10. HOF93 or whoever stated that Lynde needed to "suck-it-up" needs a foot in his a@*. Anyone who has watched him knows he doesn't need a breather. Come on...no one needs to go to that level on a kid who has busted his butt to get where he is. He was hurt and it was clear to anyone who gives a crap about the individuals and not just the outcome. You should be ashamed of yourself for playing God and doctor. And if you are a doctor, maybe you could have went down and looked at Lynde as we had a nurse-practioner on hand and she did just that. Arm-chair coaches are what hurt this sport giving their un-educated "two-cents." Suck-it-up? Really, you must have many, many records and achievements in wrestling under your belt to state something like this. If I were to guess, you were in band or maybe the cheer squad and only wished you wrestled or maybe you didn't make the team???? Maybe now you are fortunate to have a wrestler or know one...but that is far from having the expertise to criticize these young men who made it to this level. I hope you sleep well at night. Wingman, I am not questioning either of these wrestler's toughness or grit. If you check out the title, these points are directed to coaches who, in my opinion and other coaching colleagues, used questionnable strategies and hurt their wrestler's chances of winning. If you re-read the post, it is saying that a coach needs to make it clear to his wrestler that a 2nd injury timeout gives his opponent an immediate choice of positions, and an opportunity for him to put himself into a more advantageous scoring position. As for your remarks on my background, I can only rest my laurels of many years of coaching Sect., Reg., SS, & State champions. That's why it pains me when a coach puts his athletes in a position of needless disadvatage. I hope Lynde has another great season next year, an injury free tournament, and locks up a State Championship for himself and his school.
  11. OMG!! That was a headlock from Hell! One of the quickest and best I've ever seen in the state tournament. Locked so tight that Kieffer couldn't even bridge or turn out of it.
  12. I was impressed with Harvey's athleticism for a Heavyweight. Looks like he would be a great FB player. Was he? Is he goin to play collegiately?
  13. After watching another weekend of great efforts by Indiana HS wrestlers, I am amazed at the decisions some coaches make that put their own wresters in jeopardy of losing the most important matches of their lives. The first one I see very often in HS wrestling, and saw it at least 6 times in the State tournament (even from one of the veteren coaches of one of he top programs in our state). 1. A match is 0 -0 at the end of the 1st period. The coach tells his wrestler to defer instead of choosing down. WHAT???? If this match is tied thru the overtimes, do you not want your guy to have choice for the Sudden Death period? 2. Coach, if your wrestler takes an injury time-out for a non-serious injury, PLEASE make sure that he knows that if he takes another one, he instantly gives the other wrestler choice of positions. I'm prettty sure that Lynde and Stevenson could have sucked it up a little more and not asked for that 2nd injury time-out. 3. If your wrestler has been ridden like a rented mule for the 2 min period, and the 30 sec OT, and likewise, you've ridden hthe other guy out, why do you put him down in the Sudden Death period?
  14. Is it just me or does B Wright remind you of Kelvin Jackson, State Champ in early 90's from Anderson Highland. Maybe an NCAA Championship looms in his future also. He sure fits into the IU tradition of late with awesome 125 lbers.
  15. OK, all you grapplin experts who think they know how to pick'em. Before you pick a match, have one of you set a Vegas Style line on that match. My buddies and I have done this for years and have a ton of fun with it. Anyone can pick a winner in a match. But what if you have JasonTsirtsis -13 vs. an oponent, or Braden Atwood to pin in under 4:30. Who you gonna take now? You will be amazed how painful a late takedown for an 8 pt. victory can be if you are giving up 7 1/2 pts. Try it--you'll like it.
