  1. If this committee would address a list of issues I might support it: water bottles at weigh-ins, water bottles during a break in OT, too many coaches at the table, too many coaches/staff in the corner, Merriville SS, the price of shaved ice, etc. Take on all the issues that have litte, or nothing to do with putting points on the board and take this out of the officials hands! Let's never forget shaking hands with everyone after the match that you got you butt handed to you, got a bad call, or the flu!
  2. No feathers, I am a recruiter for mat officials. You have great ideas. I want you to take you idea to critic officials' calls on the edge of the mat and implement to improve the efficiency of wrestling officiating. I hope it works as well/efficiently as this experiment in the freedom of speech we call Indianamat.com. When you treat every referee's decision as a public opinion survey, what could go wrong? Or you could take that step of two clicks on the ihsaa.org, enter you payment info, answer 75/100 right (open book) and become a solution to all the ills that poison the fans of wrestling Indiana. This is an open invitation to anyone, not just the fans of video review that you proposed. It is a fail-proof plan.
  3. You sir, must have never cut weight. Subway is enjoyable in November. In February, it is a joke that 'soon-to-be' fat athletes laugh about together as they enjoy animal flesh covered in high calorie sauces made of simple sugars. Maybe this is some inside joke between 100#'s? This type of healthy sandwich humor, dare I speak for all large men (round is a shape), is lost on us > Five dollar Febrany is no holiday for a man who reserves a plate for each course of a meal: chips plate, veggie plate, meat plate, bread plate, pie plate, fruit plate, cheese plate.
  4. Too bad they took all of my 'cool points'. See you in Indy aoberlin.
  5. Sodakchamp, there is nothing between you and the mat but space and opportunities. Pony up cowboy.
  6. Just one man's opinion/philosophy What is the point of HS again? If we are a productive, capitalistic economy we will need a steady supply of competition, winner-takes-all attitude workforce. The Grammy Awards are on TV at my house. What is your stance on 2nd & 3rd place for artist of the year? ...makes me think of the 'Most Improved Award'. Does this ever make you wonder 'how bad were they'? At what age do we simply reward the best? When is ok to say there is not second, third, etc.? I was fourth. I realize that moment the horn went off that I gave enough effort for fourth. My family celebrated that effort and the result that Saturday night. Now, the reality was that I put in a 1st place effort on Sunday (in something other than wrestling). The point is that losing taught me something that consolations would not have.
  7. ihsaa.org - click 'officials' - scroll down to 'become an official' 100 questions, true/false, and you only have to get 75% right... The wrestling mole will give you a great deal on a gray shirt and your off. Also, ask an official in your area about the new rating system for selecting officials for advancement.
  8. Merriville SS would take all week.
  9. Aoberlin, I think we normally agree, but... :-[ We are preparing young men for the world that exists away from the mat. With that in mind, if I am not the one picked in a job interview is there a consolation round? If you are not number one, well, you are not the one. When I was a wrestler I trained that way, and as a professional I prepare the same way. In life you get one chance. It is what it is.
  10. Logan regional as a whole undoubtedly ranks number 1 in confidence... and stalling :
  11. If MD doesn't want them I hear Elkhart Memorial may have an opening... Either of them can list me as a reference 8)
  12. Some of us live to far away to drive down the whole stretch of US 31 Christmas lights without a meal. If you know this route try this: while you are getting your breaks checked in Kokomo catch a cab thru another 13 stop lights to Half Moon. Try anything on the menu and you will have a smile on your face for the last hour of the drive into Indy. They have plenty to keep you hydrated as well. The ribs have become an annual part of any trip to Indy. Tell 'em awood2 sent you Jimtown 138, you have to know what I am talking about! halfmoonbrewery.com

  14. Exactly my point. You will miss them at Reg, Semi, and State. You will see what I mean.
  15. The style of the guy standing on the top step.
  16. Calling (and using stalling) is an art form. There are many instances it should be called as soon as you recognize it and many instances it is obvious and should be ignored: 1) if someone is protecting a slim lead = call it 2) if it is 8-0 and the guy with 0 isn't pushing the issue = why get yourself involved... 3) first period 0-0 and nobody seems to care, or waiting for the right moment = call it both ways The good refs know that they either understand how to call stalling or they don't. If they get it, they call it. If they aren't comfortable calling it then they should take that call out of their tool box. Some of you have touched on a much greater problem that you may not even be aware of yet. The system for how officials are chosen to work the state level has changed dramatically this year. In the past, coaches rated officials, period. If coaches rated as one of the best you got a date to the big dance. Now, coaches votes are only half. There is only one other criteria on the list that refs can't control, number years experience. What has happened already and you haven't even realized it is that the young refs are done for the season. You will see a trend over the next few weeks.
  17. After a season like that I would think about cashing it all in too. Probably a varsity spot on the swim team, or preseason baseball workouts. Too bad, sounds like a good wrestler who kept running into walls at every turn.
  18. Somebody better gas up the tractor before they go to bed tonight
  19. If the point of this topic is how to improve wrestlings image, then why not hire coaches that help mold boys into men with character. Some of the best coaches that ever set foot on a wrestling mat have done it in jeans and a polo.
  20. 1) Coaches, please don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself... 2) Everything looks good with a trophy or a medal around your neck! That's all this fan/parent cares about looks. 3) ACT professional and your attire won't matter.
  21. Great job, Levi. Congrats to dad/coach, as well.
  22. All perfectly good answers. My wife especially liked this last one... Our biggest pitfall is that only people who have actually wrestled, and/or married up, understand any of this.
