  1. 3 Class Division Sectionals consists of: 3-5 Teams from large class division 3-5 Team from middle class division 3-5 Team from small class division 2 Class Divsion (But I don't think this may be broke up enough to realistally sustain and grow the sport through the team tournament) 5-7 teams from large class division 5-7 team from small class division Award a sectional title to whatever team has the most sectional tournament point in each division. Porochrial and Private school have some type of student population multiplier or are just simply moved up one division. Have each team winner move on their own team regional matches. Have the top individuals reguarless of class move on to the individual team tournament. In most cases we will still see many of the same teams go to state every year in each of the divisions. But in the middle and smaller division things will change more. Plus in many areas you will see more changes from year to year in who win the sectional and regional titles. That means more coaches, schools schools and communities can use it as publicity for the sport. This will help team state grow the sport at the lower levels more than it does now. All of which while still keeping a individual state tournament as one class.
  2. Agree with that one. Did we ever hear the results of the last coaches survey that was taken on what coaches through needed to be addressed the most?
  3. That semi-state qualifier may not be near your weight if you are at a big or at a small school so may not matter anyway. It not necessarily the size of the school but the circumstances of the school wrestling program and other super motivated individual around your weight in the room that will be more of a determining factor of if you have a quality practice partner or not. I've seen individuals at both big and small school have sucess and drag their practice partners along with them. I've seen both big and small school have individual stuggles too. It is much easier to get a few individuals together and do what it takes to get somepalce than it is to put together a whole team that can do it. We put one of the top 10 kids in state on any big or small school team that team instantly improves his practice partner. For that reason I can see a large difference in wanting to class an individual state competition vs. wanting to class a team state competition where some school have limited numbers to pull an entire team of motivated and talented individuals from.
  4. I'm almost postive wrestling team state isn't the only sports program the IHSAA constantly loses money on. Not sure why it is one of the main ones to go over re-configuring some of the other sports to make more revenue efficient.
  5. I agree lpd though it is good to hash out the shortfalls of the situation in hopes that we can learn something that may help us in future dealings. Are you able to share what some of these "controllables" are at some point and how the wrestling community as a whole can help with them. Obviously the more we can be proactive the better we can prepare against future IHSAA issues that involve wrestling.
  6. I think change to the team super-regional idea did hurt attendence for regionals in many areas. Because of the change teams traveled from a much farther distance in certain regions and hte increased travel time did lead to less of the family, friends, and community members wanting to make the trip. Where as the previous team regional had team come from a closer distance helped to draw a decent crowd. The team super-regionals seemed to also be set up in a way that in many areas almost pre-determined the winner. This also would discourage none immediate family from making such a trip. I think that change was just another example of a IHSAA decision that ended up dooming the sucess of the event at that level. That change didn't do much to change the team state attendence but I believe we have hashed out much of that issue already.
  7. When your limited to the Top 20 in the entire nation that is a hard list to crack into. Their are some very talented nationally accomplished seniors out there our guys do not always have a chance to face (somewhat due to obscure in season travel restrictions). I'd say this Indiana Mat front page article would help fill in most of the information about some of Indiana's top senior wrestlers http://www.indianamat.com/top-10-seniors-for-the-class-of-2011/2010/10/ This article obviously does not includes a a few of Indiana's highly decorated Juniors and Sophmores.
  8. I believe for the most most we would continue to see most of the same teams in, with maybe 2 new teams appearing each year. Even if we had a 2 or 3 class team state system (which I am in favor of) we would still see the same team make it most years. However, I believe winning team sectional, team regional, and previously team semi-state recognition does go far to further the sports appeal in those communities. And in many areas the teams that won team sectional and the previous version of team regional did change every few years. To me team state is the only pure way to determine the best team in state. In many years the team that wins the Coaches Trophey is not even in the finals of team state. Its not a true team title if a few individuals are giving you the points needed. Its not a true team title when not everyone even made it to state to start on an even level points wise. I have heard many people from other states comment that they are jelious that Indiana offers a team state title. Even many NCAA fans wish a true dual national champion was declared instead of determaning it by a system where only certain schools have enough stud individuals to have a chance at it. To me team dual meets do grow a fan base and get more community support for your program. With the lose of team state we may see less dual meets as coaches decide is more important to pick up one or two more tournaments to prepare for individual state. Remember because of points each tournament you pick up is 2 less duals you can participate in. Sure we will still have duals but some areas will put less emphasis on them since it back to being much more of an individual sport if in the end all we haveis individual state. I agree with Hinton that their is something unique and almost more important when you win a key team dual. Knowing the guys you bleed and sweat with every day came together for a big dual win has something special to it that just an individual win over that team doesn't give you. To me the experiance of seeing team state is entirely different than individual state and just as exciting. And this is coming from someone who has not had a team participate in it. To me team sucess is the best way to grow a team. You as an individual may just have average success, but if you can help your team accomplish something greater than in the individual you still feel like you had accomplished something special in your wrestling career. To me we short changed the chances of a sustained team state success by not making it into a 2 or 3 class system. With that more middle and small size school would have sectional and regional sucess leading to more recognition in their area and thus more team growth. By growing the sport in that way we would have had a beter selling point to why team state was worth keeping. However, in its current form teams stateisn't leading to as much team growth since i most cases winning a sectional title is as far as most team can reaslisically get at this point. The oversight of not trying to make a class team state system I believe was the biggest reason we are having this conversation today. It would have been as simple as putting 3-5 big teams, 3-5 middle size teams, and 3-5 small teams in each sectional and then awarding a sectional title to each size school based on team points then moving along the team tournament from there while keeping the individual event in place. That would create several more team regional site, and more participants, leading to more people and communities coming to watch these events, as well. We can't blaim the top 15 teams for this since they developed a solid program but as a result of their talent they have shut out most other teams from having a chance an created this apathy for team state. I like team state, I want t okeep team state. But unfortunately we and the IHSAA never found a way to properly nurture team states into a sucessful sports builder and money maker. Because of this I to fear that team state doesn't have much time. If it does end I hope we do seriously go back to restructuring the individual series at the sectional and regional level again since we no loger have to consider team state in its design. Maybe that way we can find ways to increase attendence and clean up some of the current issues (like having to win several matches to get to regionals but only 1 win in regionals gets you to semi-state).

  10. Well the excitement is still there. You just have it in two parts. Part 1 in the winners backet semi-finals round. Then part two in the consolation semi-final round. It would sure keep wrestlers moving at full steam instead of getting relaxed after making past the second round. Plus the entire wrestle-back rounds could have the potential to be just as entertaining as the finals being you have to prove you can survive a few hard fought matches just to make it to state.
  11. One issues with wrestlebacks at the semi-state level is time. I would propose at least wrestleback from the currently names ticket round on. However, even that would add more time to the event. We would need to come up with the best plan that the IHSAA would believe benifits them too. Would that be having weigh-ins and the first round of wrestling on Friday night (like state)? Do we just have a much longer Saturday than we now have? Or would we re-work the whole system and re-invent how sectionals through state is structured. I can see this occuring in the future anyway with regionals not having as much importance as it once did since one win moves you on to semi-state. With no team state to worry about I would think a move would be made to structure secionals differently. Maybe back to a smaller sectional with 2-3 moving on t0 a 4 secitonal regional then top 4 from there. That way regionals is back to being more of a two or three match grinder to get to semi-state. Or more sectionals to regional so one less round at semi-state to leave more time at semi-state wrestlebacks. Though the IHSAA may not get as much revenue from that so they may not like it. I honestly liked the idea of team state and believed it was the best way to show who the true best "team" in the state was compared to adding tournament points up. I also believe we short changed the chance of team state support and success by not getting to a true multi-class team state system. This would have allowed for more teams to go farther, more crowd at team events, and more team growth for schools of all sizes that were winning at each level of the team series. Even with keeping the individual series the same as it is now.
  12. Well is thats close to a definite now or just still speculation on what the IHSAA is looking at? If its a definite are we able to gain something else as a result or is the wrestling community just losing something all together out of the deal.
  13. Greg Warren for what looks like $15 tickets. (must be 18+) That the greatest deal you will ever have to see a 3x Afton Quadrangular champion and cauliflower ear survivor. We should get a full on wrestling crowd Saturday night so we can have the Red Alert! in full effect. He' will also be in Crackers in Broadripple-Indianapolis over New Years Eve. http://www.flowrestling.org/videos/coverage/view_video/235171-greg-warren-comedian/188608-wesley-wes-wesley http://www.flowrestling.org/videos/speaker/1507-greg-warren with Henry Phillips on guitar
  14. If we are talking about the same kids he is going to be a Junior at Martinsville. He had a decent season at 171 last year making it to semi-state. No clue what he has done in the offseason other than he was doing well at freestyle/greco state in the cadet division. This may be based on a few guys close to him hopeing for a breakout year. Well see how much he and others have moved towards the next level once the season gets underway.
  15. From what I've been told by health professionals bleach will do a good job of cleaning. However, the residue from the bleach mixed with sweat may be enough to increase the chances of drying out your skin. This may create more skin cracks leading to a greater chance of actually getting a skin disease. We have been advised for years that it would be best to find other cleaning products with less of a bleach base.
  16. Thanks and good luck. I have started to talk to Coach Hobbs about the progress in the rest of the state.
  17. Not sure where you are at, but you could maybe check with a hospital (maybe nursing home but not always as good) in your area to see what type of clearner they use for areas that need good steralization.. I would suspect what they use would also do a decent job on the mats.
  18. You are reading my mind. I figured if it wasn't with another known fighter he wasn't going to give Herman the exposure being that he would be heading elsewhere.
  19. How is HYWAY doing in trying to expand into Central and Southern Indiana?
  20. Thanks. I have had that song in my head for two days now.
  21. Well being its over the last 10 years (2000-2010) I would hope no one was bringing upany recent Father/Son combinations to add to the list. Several great brother and cousin combinations throughout the state to speak off. Its evident that wrestling talent runs in many families.
  22. Unfortunately I choose not to go to UFC 119 mostly do to the financial hit of buying a ticket. One of our assistant coaches went and said it was great. He was sitting in a big Chris Lytle section and being a big BBJ guy himself was a little outnumbered during that match. But overall had a great time from what he has told me. I know some of you were able to go, so how was your experience?
  23. Was that to go to the school or to keep 100 feet away from the school at all times? ;D
  24. I will say programs like ESPN E60 has helped to put some good feel good stories related to wrestling out to the general public. I hope its a trend that continues.
