I’m telling you look at the girls semi state put it back in a formula form and there you go.

Does the IHSAA have anything to do with organizing the girls state event?  I figured that was all the IHSGW groups organizing, including creating the bracket formula.

    .1 and didn’t run it off…………….

Per the rules once weigh-ins have started wrestlers are not allowed to do anything extra that would look like losing weight. So it’s just standing in line and hoping you at least can make it on your one challenge scale attempt.  Like most other I would assume he would have done what he could in the short time in the gym prior to weigh-ins starting but the hope didn’t get him there this time.

I live by WeBo and my brother lives next to Tri-West it is 9 minutes to his house. Lebanon is 8 minutes from my house. Zionsville is 15 minutes away. Lebanon and Tri-West should be  in the Crawfordsville sectional based on location IN MY OPINION.

On thing to always consider when determine most, not all locations, is actually the central geographic point of the sectional and then of the regional.  Most people want to determine where they “should go” based on the host site.  However, the actual school site is up to the IHSAA based on who even applies.  So it’s a better determination of where school would go, again in most cases, is to find a somewhat centralized geographic point.  Obviously schools on the boarder of those zones would be close to either district and possibly closer to the others host site.  Not to mention some roads are more direct or quicker than others when looking at what site would be more easily accesssble competes to which one is actually within your central geographic point.

I didn’t look to see if that’s the case here, just pointing out a variable most people do overlook.

And on a related note I do agree there needs to be a little location wiggle room to help disperse the number of teams and the number of athletes these teams bring on average a little more evenly.

  4. As with some of the prior years we will see just how much work they put into using all the possible formula options and making them actually “random.”

Hate to think some coaches would game the system and suggest a wrestlers take a certain finish. But when state is on the line, most of the other regional seems pretty clear minus a major upset, and the formula becomes predictable I’m sure the thought of having that conversation is there.  Still a gamble that maybe too high odds play but again states on the line if the bet lines up. The draw of Semi-State and State are brutal enough as it is.

Just hope the IHSAA had the time and forethought to actually use the random generator and all of their possible formula options.

If the new data is released before the end of the tournament, we'll use it. Often it has been historically. However, it was released far after the season last cycle. Because of that, we're currently in the process of studying up-to-date DOE numbers to be sure they're viable and fair for all schools anywhere near any cut lines. If they are, we'll use DOE numbers this year unless a State Finals hard deadline for IHSAA publishing is met.

Not sure what your process is for finding the DOE school attendance numbers, but the 2nd of the two official DOE school “Count Days” is tomorrow (Thursday).  The attendance number provided by schools for that specific day would be used to decide the enrollment for the school year.  So the school numbers may shift once school submit their data and it works through the DOE system.  How long that takes is anyone’s guess. Also, I’m not sure if that becomes the new reliable number or if it gets average with the number from the 1st “Count Day” which occurred in October.

You're right, there were some changes in the Indy and south/southwest sites because of all the moving.

"Categories" are tabulated based on how many collective projected regional or semi-state qualifiers there are at a given site. An average-level site is Category 4, meaning there are roughly 4 advancement-level kids per weight class at that site. So moving schools around definitely impacts things. For example, if you move two schools into one sectional that would be expected to get 18 through and move out two schools expected to get only 4 through, you've jumped a Category level right there (+18 - 4 = +14 = 1 per weight extra advancement-level kids). A site that was a Category 4 before would then become a Category 5 and receive advancement points for 5 kids instead of 4.

I've got all the data out to our data managers already, but I need some more time to get out the Procedures doc later today.

I sure don't envy your calculations when it comes to the shift our sectional had this year and its additional effect on the regional.

  7. It was Top 2 from Sectional to Regional and Top 3 from Regionals to Semi-States for some time around the 80s and 90s.  The Sectionals were smaller in size back then with 4 sectionals feeding into a Regional.  My Indiana Wrestling History book is home so I can't lockdown the exact dates at the moment.  Y2CJ should be able to look it up the progression if he has his copy handy.  I had considered transcribing most of the history of the tournament series from that book into an online source, but keep assuming Hook and Half or Y2CJ would just beat me to completing it.

  8. 1999 The previous years 3rd place finisher Steve Minton (New Albany) defeated the previous years State Champ Robert Rossbottom (Jeffersonville) to win Regionals.  Doesn't seem like a crazy upset until you factor in a couple of things.

One: Rossbottom had defeated Minton on several previous occasions and almost everyone outside of the New Albany faithful assumed it would happen again.  And the bigger Two: This upset created the  Rossbottom vs. Dan Jankowski (EMD) ticket-round match at Semi-State.  For context, Jankowski was the returning state runner-up from the year prior.  Making this match the poster child for semi-state wrestle-back for at least the quarter-finals.

Rossbottom defeated Jankowski at semi-state by a point and moved on to eventually becoming a two time state champion.  Jankowski as a senior was done for his high school career and became one of the best to never win a state title. Steve Minton would go on to prove he was also as good as advertised by becoming state runner-up the week to Rossbottom.

  9. Should be a good battle if most of the main lineup is in.  There is some good talk going about it on indianamat’s college board.

But I really wish they would schedule this one on a Sunday.  Saturday of Sectionals makes it a little more difficult to make it after a long day in the HS gym.  I feel like it was on a Sectional Saturday last time it was in Bloomington too.
