  1. Well the attempt to get Machida apparently never panned out and Tito Ortiz has now officially agreed to fight Evans for the second time.
  2. Well norm technically they would be competing for their team and school in a school sponsored contest. So this situation isn't exactly the same as an unattached wrestler competing in a national or international event which allows both high school and non-high school competition. This why the wrestler would have to be unattached from representing their high school. Most recent example for us would be Alex Tsirtsis being invited to and wrestling at the Midlands Tournament his senior year. If it falls within the rules I would say its more akin to the idea of a Varsity 1 and Varsity 2 team that some teams have started using. In this case the varsity 2 team for the Al Smith it would seem would just consist of one wrestler. I agree that is seems strange that this type of issue would pass the rules, but as I mentioned earlier I believe it's probably a grey area the IHSAA has never thought to discussion before. Though the idea of an individual invitational type event and the growth of Varsity 2 teams may eventually open the door of those talks eventually.
  3. Joining Ranking Guys twitter following will give you the predicted #1 at the new weights. http://twitter.com/rankings_guy Aside from that the pre-season top 10 is traditionally made up of last years state finals non-senior placement at that same weight. Obviously with some weight adjustments this year and a few freshman studs added to the lightest weight class. http://www.ihsaa.org/dnn/Portals/0/Boys%20Sports/Wrestling/2010-11/1011StateBrackets.pdf So, you may not really need the ranking guys official list to come up with those names.
  4. Interesting addition to a prestigious event. Has this type of "wildcard" format been tried at another Indiana high school tournament before in any sport? Sounds like a good idea, but it would seem that if it's within the rules it must be another gray area the IHSAA just never thought discuss before. This maybe the one time a year when the state of Indiana is actually hoping for a few forfeits spread throughout the weight classes.
  5. Looks like Evan's will get a rematch against Machida now.
  6. Mr. Wonderful has been on a nice streak since starting his MMA career. Hope he can get back to 100% soon and continuemoving up the ranks.
  7. So I see your wife spends way to much time on it too. ;D
  8. May help in getting a few more lighter guys prepared to wrestle at 55kg internationally. But, in America finding enough talented 118lb wrestlers and not just bodies for each of the college teams was probably getting to be a big challenge.
  9. Well the supposed place he is going has a speculated hole at 106 for the upcoming season that he could fill. But with Boston setting his eyes on a DI college wrestling career I would think he would start trying to move up in weight in the next year or two. As for any DI prospect trying to stay at the lightest two weights as long as possible. This strategy seem unproductive to me in the long run. Sure if your goal is HS championships staying at the lighter weight may slightly aid in this. But I would think many high profile DI schools would be weary of signing a guy who was just studs at 103 or 112 for 4-years. I'm sure there are a few exceptions, but not many. For those who have a goal of a solid DI career making an effort to move up slowly so you could wrestler your last year or two at or close to 125 would see more beneficial.
  10. Kids these days with there muscle cars, slicked back hair, fancy leather jackets, rock and roll, and new fangled social networks. Just no appreciation for the good old days. Hey get off my lawn you! This used to be a civilized community before some rag a muffin invented those hoop skirts and those darn juke boxes.
  11. Word is it will be far west of the little community of Yorktown, OH.
  12. I'd call this more of an accelerated drill with the purpose of placing each other in scramble situations. Definitely not the traditional freestyle match as mentioned at the start.

    Fargo

Well if we are adding in the girls division I'd definitely put Miracle, Hildebrandt, and Strub having a very good shot at making the finals. Two made it last year and Kayla probably would have if they didn't pull her out since she wasn't officially an 9th grader yet. With those three it would help to inflate the number of Indiana wrestlers that can make the finals. Aside from that I can see many Indiana guys capable of making AA status. But for several to also have the tournament needed to make the finals of a huge event like Fargo will be tough. I'm not sure which wrestlers in the boys division will be able to rise of this year but if we can get 3 in the final on the boys side I would consider that an accomplishment.
  14. I think you hit the main issue in the middle of your statement. What does your team and area need more of: A. More mat time for your wrestlers which can lead to greater success and possibly more publicity for the sport in your community. B. More opportunities to watch the team compete for your fan base and potential fans which could help gain more support for the sport within your community. Obviously, the easy answer is a good balance of both. But, I'm guessing you are looking for which approach will gain community support the fastest. To me that may be somewhat of a community to community issues. If not many people in the community know wrestling even is a legit sport at the HS the fastest way to change that would be show them you are having team and individual success. Since people are attracted to success the more they hear about it the better chance they will jump on board and this will continue to help the team grow further. If the wrestling team has had a fair run but the community doesn't seem to feel connected with it then more dual meets will probably be the fastest way to gain the community support needed to get to the next level. People want a more fan friendly way (all day events make this hard) to feel connected to a program that is doing well and will show up if they feel they can watch the team add a win to a successful season. Either way I think collaborating with the media and keeping the student up to date on the team progress will do more to grow the culture of wrestling weather you have a schedule of away multi-dual season or have more home duals.
  15. Thanks for to your contributions to Indiana wrestling Chris and good luck to you in helping to further develop wrestling in Georgia.
  16. Taylor has mentioned he expects to keep growing and moving up in weight as he progresses through his college career.

Coach Jones said they were probably wrestling at the Ukraine Event which I think was at the very end of July. The other possibility was the Poland event which was at a similar time period.
  18. If I recall from an interview earlier this year I believe he said he hadn't narrowed down his choices to the top few spots yet. But he did mention he has a strong interest at staying around the Big 10. With the great coaching and training partner combinations around that conferences he has several great wrestling school to pick from that can help him reach his goals. Another factor being is whats his thought process on varsity. Is it high on his list to get 4 full years of varsity after a possible first year redshirt or could he be OK sitting the bench one varsity year if it means he is training behind the #1 or #2 ranked guy in the nation around his weight.

Being the public relations guy for the ISWA board has it's perks.
  20. There should be a link near the start of the thread to the site. Not sure how well it is updated though.
  21. Unfortunately, they usually are a little slow on the website posts.
  22. I'd think those results would be worth getting the Indy Star to write an article on Indiana's achievements down there.
  23. One other thing I neglected to mention before stems from this comment. Growing wrestling opportunities at the college level throughout the state. Yeah it's an up hill battle at this point but also the larger number of college options has aided other states development from what I've seen. This peaks more interest which develops the cultural and community aspect of the sport. Allows for more opportunities for youth development through camp and other programs. It gives the high school guys more post high school wrestling options close to home, which means a greater chance of some continuing to wrestle in college. It also attracts out of state wrestlers to the state for college, which means more may stay in area and join coaching ranks.
  24. They have a club and wrestler registration process similar to other organizations like USA Wrestling. Information should still be listed on there website.
  25. Wright regional finals at 215 as a sophomore. He Lost in the round to go of semi-state by a point or two to Knight of Terra Haute North.
