  1. After the last 3 weeks of performances, this is not far from the truth.
  2. All the selection procedures are here: www.themat.com/forms/2012freestylecriteria.pdf According to this document, 2 individuals will be kept out of the Olympic Trials (one for China, and one for Finland in case the individual in China doesn't qualify the 60kg weight). Then, if one of the two at the World Qualifying Tournaments succeeds in qualifying the weight, a separate special Olympic Trials event will be held that will include the China individual, the Finland individual, and the Olympic Trials single elimination tournament winner. The one individual who was successful in qualifying the weight in China or Finland will get a bye into a best-of-three match final, while the other two will wrestle one match to get to the final. I read a while ago already that Reece will be in China. This means he will have the first shot at qualifying the weight for us. I'm guessing no official announcement from USA wrestling has come out yet because there still needs to be a final decision about what will happen in Finland if Reece fails in China.
  3. Why do you say, "not all teams are included"? The IHSAA used one individual weekend to pick 32 participants for its duals tournament. The IHSWCA used 4 full weeks of comprehensive individuals' results to pick 24 teams. I've asked this before. Is that really so different?
  4. Molloy just beat Nikko Villarreal--the kid who a few weeks ago famously tossed the 3-time California champ, the unbeatable Alex Cisneros, in his last high school match ever to steal his 4th championship. Great win for Molloy.
  5. Lee, Molloy, Johnson, Neibarger, Hurford need one win for top 8. Bradley in the semi's. Everyone else is out, I believe.
  6. Ok, I didn't realize before that guys could take a 'normal' redshirt and an Olympic redshirt.
  7. I'm guessing he won't redshirt until the 2015-16 Olympic season, meaning he would wrestle as a true freshman/sophomore/junior and come back for his fifth year as a senior. He was a monster yesterday. He'll clearly be an NCAA title contender next season as a freshman.
  8. Still, as an improving-by-the-moment teenager that's an intriguing unknown quantity at this level, I'd think he'll get some consideration because he showed he can score against anyone. Anyone else not-yet qualified will probably be already established further down the pecking order.
  9. So Bailey and Johnston (Tsirtsis' two losses) are essentially 1st and 2nd since Kolat was already a qualifier. Since Tsirtsis was essentially on the bubble as a high school student against all experienced college grads, I'd have to think he would be a very attractive wildcard candidate for the Trials. There are 2 wildcards in freestyle still to be handed out.
  10. second session 4-10pm today for freestyle...greco and women's tomorrow
  11. They definitely wrestle for true second AND Kolat has already qualified, so it will be the top 2 outside of Kolat that receive the spots in the OTT. Also, Herbert has of course already qualified for the OTT. There are a number of previously qualified guys getting some mat time apparently. But the regulations clearly say that it will be the top 2 spots not already qualified that will get the invites to the OTT.
  12. Jason gets Gage Harrison, a freshman at Oklahoma City University, first round. Darrion Caldwell if he wins. Alex has Brett Robbins, who had some success at Northern Iowa. Lots of potential studs within the couple rounds after that.
  13. Probably after weigh-ins tonight and entries become official. Lots of tough dudes at this tournament. Should be fun to track tomorrow. themat.com is supposed to stream a couple mats.
  14. One more note: they weigh in the night before at +2kg (4.4 pounds). That's basically 150 pounds for the 66kg class. That means Jason will be facing guys with man strength that will be stepping on the mat the next day at around 165 pounds. That's a tall, tall order. Alex used to cut to 60kg (132 pounds) for big events like this. Neither weight seems optimum for these two.
  15. Awesome opportunity for Jason. Anybody know why guys like Nick Simmons and Jake Herbert are on the entry list? They're obviously already qualified. EDIT--Found the answer: anyone can enter, but previously qualified wrestlers who place Top 2 don't count toward the number of spots awarded. Also, how many qualifying spots are open for each weight class? EDIT--The two highest placing individuals who haven't previously qualified will be awarded spots in the Trials.
  16. I read on the USA Wrestling boards that Reece is registered and planning to go to China.
  17. Further details: The U.S. also didn't qualify 60kg for the last Olympics, but we received a last-minute wildcard position. I'm not sure if that will be a possibility this year. The next International Olympic Qualifier event is in China the week after the U.S. Olympic Trials. Reece is scheduled to wrestle in that event. If Reece doesn't place Top 3 there, yet another International Olympic Qualifier will be held in Finland the week after China. Wrestlers have to be registered by 1 month before these events, so I'm not sure if Reece or another U.S. wrestler plans to be registered and participate in the Finland event as well, just in case China doesn't go well. Whatever the case, it's already an insane proposition that Reece has to train for and attempt to win the U.S. trials, then hop on a plane and head to China to try to qualify our nation for the Olympics a week later. (And will he be our rep at the China event even if he loses at our Trials? I'm guessing he has no "if I lose" plans mapped out, but I'm also guessing he would still probably need to go and wrestle that tournament for us.)
  18. The U.S. took advantage of the Pan Am qualifier relatively well this weekend, securing Olympic berths in 7 of the 9 weight classes it needed (16 of 18 now qualified). All women's weights are now qualified, along with all Greco weights except for 96kg and all freestyle weights except for 60kg (Reece Humphrey's weight). Shawn Bunch wrestled 60kg for the U.S. and only managed a 5th place position when he needed second to grab the Olympic berth for the U.S. There will be two more international qualifying events in which the U.S. can still qualify their two missing weight classes.
  19. That's not necessarily true. Before, there were enough bodies in the right range to fill the heavier weight classes. For example, you just had to have 1 available body that weighed at least 190 to fill 285 and 1 body available that weighed at least 172 to fill 215. Now, there are 5 "big guy" weights that clearly Indiana had a very difficult time filling. Meanwhile, the percent distribution of forfeits in the middle weights was far down. The argument for the new weight classes was that, yes, there may be more year-round "dedicated" wrestlers in the middle weights, but that there would be enough in-season kids at the upper weights to make forfeits come down overall. Clearly that didn't happen in Indiana. Though I changed my opinion to preferring the old weight classes a few months ago, I'm still surprised at how high these numbers are. We'll see what happened in other states.
  20. Honestly, it's a bit of a downer of a year for fans of ex-Indiana high schoolers and in-state universities. No one of either of those categories made the quarterfinals. Obviously, there are a couple still alive with very legitimate AA chances, but it's a bit of a disappointing year overall.
  21. Cons. Round 4 - Camden Eppert (Purdue) 14-16 won by decision over Michael Martinez (Wyoming) 25-12 (Dec 6-3) Cons. Round 4 - Cash? Quiroga (Purdue) 22-7 won in overtime over Brian Owen (Boise State) 9-3 (OT 6-4) ...results from TrackWrestling.com Cashe came back from down 3-0 in the 2nd to win this one. Both guys need 2 victories to AA.
  22. We've always, with only a couple exceptions, won the "small school" dual. In the large-school dual, they've beaten us more than we've beaten them, but we win sometimes (usually in Indiana, when they have a lower percentage of their top guys and we have a higher percentage of ours). This year should be very interesting with us bringing 10 state champs to Illinois.
  23. But calling them "State Duals Champs" would not be out of line, since that's what they'd be.
  24. 2 AA's in the first season. Very, very impressive for Tech.
  25. I agree that calling it the IHSWCA TEAM State Championship would be a mistake for our working relationship with the IHSAA. But I don't see how calling it the IHSWCA DUALS State Championship is a slap in their face when they said we could have a scheduling exemption to create this sort of event. College wrestling has its National Duals Championship in the mid-season; again, I'm not sure what problem there would be if we call it a Duals State Championship when every team in the state had a chance to qualify and it's a duals event.
