  1. Cole Brandt 09/10 - Lost 3-2 to eventual runnerup Grimes JR year. Couldnt overcome tweaked knee and some questionable calls SR year. Went on to place 4th at Nationals. Wouldve been 184 starter as frosh until broken hand caused redshirt. Had 2nd highest winning percentage on D1 team RS frosh year.
  2. Why do we care about true second, when the system is broke? Until we get wrestlebacks at semistate and change our system at state, we will have to realize the CHAMP is #1 and the rest werent #1. We all know there are plenty of kids watching from the stands that have beaten and would the majority of the time beat some on the podium. They either had a horrible ticket round or a horrible Friday night. It is what it is. One guy wins, the rest dont.
  3. I like the fact that you pointed out it can get you to a university which you prolly wouldnt have gained acceptance to. I agree that college athletics shouldnt be used as a stepping stone, I actually believe big time athletics, such as football and basketball should be taken out of the college world entirely. Use a minor league system , too many classroom seats and scholarship $ is wasted on "pro wannabe be" football and basketball players. Even though very FEW of them will ever make it anyway.I just used the no pro future label in my earlier post to emphasize there isnt much $ to be made in the sport. How few collegiate guys even get decent coaching jobs? Some guys are ready to move on and make $ to earn a living. And Im sorry I think I hijacked this post with my rant.
  4. There are many reasons why kids do not make it through college wrestling, academics being a part of it. Im actually surprised that anyone makes it through college wrestling at all, especially D1. Lack of decent scholarships, time involved for no pro future (except mma), and serious injuries (college men are WAY stronger than high school boys). Anyhow unless you've experienced college wrestling you prolly shouldnt call out people for the decisions they make.
  5. Is Atwood hurt? Noticed at the Midlands, Stein is at 197.
  6. What happened to Malloy? Did he transfer?
  7. Have a 10' dollamur that comes in 2 sections. Small and lightweight, good for portability. PM if interested. Color is Gold.
  8. So sorry to hear, our prayers go out to you guys. The Brandt family.
  9. Very honorable, too many kids in the wrestling and football world do this. In 2 sports where physical strength play a big part, I consider it an unfair advantage. BUT the IHSAA allows it. Ive said it before on here years ago, SOME 17 yr olds are physically mature, MOST 18 yr olds are, ALL 19 yr olds are. My oldest was in his second year of D1 college wrestling and he coulda still been in HS, it wouldnt have helped him be a better wrestler, but he woulda had a better bio. Some people will do anything to fill up the trophy shelf! If you graduate HS at 20 your focus prolly shoulda been elsewhere besides trying to be the big stud in the HS sports world.
  10. Any statement about wrestling being a team sport.
  11. Nice showing at the Midlands! Congrats
  12. Why so many Trinity forfeits? Beast of the East wrestlers?
  13. Yeah look at the qualifiers from 170 thru 195. Are they ALL actually State worthy? I would say about 16 of them would not of made it to state without the new weight classes! Obviously they are State worthy cause these are the new weight classes. But I have never been a fan of the action at 215 and Hvy, now watching 170 thru Hvy gives me the same bored cant wait till its over feeling.
  14. Maybe the reason a regional qualifier pulled off all those wins and pins is that the competition is weak? Nobody wants to run kids off to basketball, but this topic is about how people feel about the weight class changes. Most , not ALL seem to think it was bad for the sport.
  15. Danville pulled this off last year at 195. Every coach can do with what he wants for his team, just don't go around posting how individuals were undefeated when they avoided Sliga to stay that way. Deal with it and move on!
  16. 106 - Red, 113 - Micic, 120 - Phillips, 126 - Crume, 132 - Moss, 138 - Blanton, 145 - Molloy, 152 - Bradley, 160 - Mccloskey, 170 - Lefever, 182 - Hurford, 195 - SLIGA, 220 - Hernandez, 285 - Bernard.
  17. There is a newer D1 program one state over that does the same thing. Funny thing is the head coach of that program was Goldmans roommate at Iowa!
  18. Cant really compare the 2 tournaments. The MD Holiday Classic has some very tough out of state competition. Also some semi state quarter brackets are way tougher than others. You hope to win regionals and hope everyone that is supposed to win theirs, does win theirs. NO UPSETS in other regionals. Then you hope you draw the weak regional. Some good wrestlers dont get to state, others do. The MD tourney is usually seeded pretty well, but sometimes they miss and you get a bad seed.
  19. I will put Mooresville 126 up there with any sectional weight class, 195 from Mville not far behind! Some pretty good kids wont even get to regionals.
  20. Why does everyone think that going to a BIG school increases your chances of going to state? My boys go/went to a big school. Just because a school is big doesnt mean they are 2-3 good guys in every weight class. My oldest during his senior year had no really good training partners. My youngest cant even find a spot in the lineup without going 2 weight classes up. Also alot of guys at smaller schools make a varsity lineup way earlier than those at a big school. Dont even try to tell me that wrestling varsity does not help you more than wrestling jv. I contend sometimes there are advantages to wrestling at a small school cause you get more varsity experience.
